Albertina does Cross-mas in Belgium, Part 1: Diegem, Loenhout and Bredene

I love Belgium. Most people seek the sun in winter, but I seek the mud, the snow, the cold and the rain, the frites, the beer, the stofvlees, and the screech of cantilever brakes on sodden rims. On Boxing Day I left thawing Britain for the freezing fields of Flanders, in search of spectacle, atmosphere, and heroes and heroines, plying their trade in the mystical dirt. Five races in seven days: the Holy Week of cyclo-cross.

My home for the week was Oudenaarde, in the heart of the Vlaamse Ardennen, and specifically The Chainstay, a house for cyclists run by Gregg and Holly Germer, and their exuberant spaniel Belle. My other housemates were British crosser Gabby Day, Canadians Shaun Adamson and Craig Richey, American Davy Yeater, and Dane Nikoline Hansen. I travelled to races with them, and tasted the cross experience from the inside out, learning valuable lessons for my own nascent attempts at the sport, and making some great friends along the way. I could write a sizeable tome on all that occurred, but for the most part I will let the pictures speak.

Star-divide

Superprestige Diegem

Diegem, under the flight path of Zaventem near Brussels, is run by night, the snow illuminated by floodlights. And snowy it was. I had a job at my first race; the Chainstay party was lacking in helpers, so I promptly found myself labeled a soigneur. This involved finding my way onto the start line through thousands of drunk Belgians (no mean feat; I waded through several bushes and snowdrifts to get there on time, and slipped over twice), collecting the jackets and legwarmers of Davy, Shaun and Craig, and then finding them afterwards to return them. But I had plenty time to enjoy the spectacle, and to track down the stars.

GvA Loenhout

There were huge crowds at the Azencross. The deafening roar of anguish from the masses, ankle deep in mud, when Sven Nys crashed in the pit was like nothing else. There were women’s and U23 races as well here, so it was quite a day, and ‘our’ very own Gabby Day made the mother of all storming starts, finishing 9th having put everything on the line.

Sylvestercross Bredene

Bredene was, by Belgian standards, a quieter affair, being a stand-alone race. However, the Holy Trinity of contemporary cross was in attendance, and the race was a demonstration for Stybar, Nys and Albert. Happily for yours truly, our little van ended up with an illustrious neighbour:

Righty ho, my computer and my pathetic internet connection are threatening revolt at the number of photos in this post, so I'm going to have to finish it in the comments or it'll crash. Again.

Bredene continued!

Craig, Shaun and Davy warm up:

A flying cross-carrot! See, Basques can do things other than climb!

In the next installment, The Chainstay gang travel to Luxembourg, and I end my trip with a wonderful day in the woods of Tervuren!

awesome!

Also, the image of flying into Belgium and looking down to see an evening CX race is too delicious for words.

Flying carrots!

and not in their usual landing-on-the-collarbone/elbow/kneecap/head/Lance Armstrong style we’re so used to in the summer months!

Top.

I’m not (gasp!) the world’s biggest cross fan & the pics remind a bit of trailing round cross country runs after my brother when I was a kid, but wow. Just wow.

Did you notice the "Bikes Not Bombs" in the first photo?

It’s actually reverse sponsorship by Cycle-Smart: they are giving promotional space to the BNB organisation. Pretty awesome move for a small company in the bike industry.

And Little Merino has a tantrum.

Seriously, I find it hard to see why Aspe have thrown him in with Irujo. It can’t end well. I was very WTFface when I saw the lineups.

Oh, Merino!

I was watching him last week and I told Urbs: This guy, he is just too slow.

by YoMarques on Jan 4, 2011 6:52 PM EST up reply actions

He's only 20, been a pro for about 6 months, and they pair him with the number 1...

He’s talented, but seriously, how to put WAY too much pressure on a young kid! I said last year they shouldn’t have paired Beroiz with Irujo; this is a similar situation only even more silly!!

De cross gaat door!

by Albertina on Jan 4, 2011 6:54 PM EST up reply actions

I can’t talk about last year, since I still dind’t watch it ;) But still, I agree with you. As far as I know, Irujo is the best one around, he would need a guy a bit older… Not as old as Titin though! :p

by YoMarques on Jan 4, 2011 6:58 PM EST up reply actions

I don't know why Irujo and Barriola never play together. That would be some pairing.

Perhaps there’s some way, to subtle for me to deduce, that they’d be incompatible. It gives me sadface that Barriola and Bengo can’t play together in the champs as they’re on different empresas…they were kick ass in the summer. Aimar/Barriola would also be class. Oh well!

De cross gaat door!

by Albertina on Jan 4, 2011 7:16 PM EST up reply actions

Ha, Barriola!

Really like that guy, I think he would play well together with Irujo. Can’t wait to see Aimar playing, just hear good stuff about him :)

by YoMarques on Jan 4, 2011 7:19 PM EST up reply actions

His left arm is the stuff of legend.

I prefer him to Irujo as a player as he’s cooler and less stroppy…when he’s on song he just demolishes people so clinically. I hope he’s as strong as he was before the injury…

De cross gaat door!

No hurry!

When you get to it, I will happily enjoy it :)

Yes hurry!

I wanna read the rest, damn it!

Albertina, I'm just wondering

who in their right mind decides to go to Belgium for a winter vacation?
