Albertina does Cross-mas in Belgium (and Luxembourg!), Part 2: Petange and Tervuren
Grand Prix Hotel Threeland, Petange
You would like more cross pictures? Yes you say? Oh ok then. Our intrepid racers Gabby, Shaun, Davy and Craig, had a day off after Bredene. New Year’s Eve was a quiet affair at The Chainstay however, as the following morning we were up at the crack of dawn to make the lengthy drive to Petange in Luxembourg. Most of the cross world’s attention was on Baal on Saturday, but in Petange there was a women’s race which drew an excellent field, and our North Americans had contracts to start in the men’s race. Most of the snow had disappeared from Oudenaarde, but Luxembourg was under a blanket, and it snowed throughout the day. Once again, I did my ‘soigneur’ bit at the start and finish, and in between ran around the very hilly, very muddy woods with my camera, taking mostly pictures of our riders as Gregg knew he would have a hectic time of it in the pits and wouldn’t get the chance. Vos and Mourey were the winners of the day, both by a country mile.

And so, the last hurrah, and what a great event with which to bid my farewells to beloved Belgium, at least for now. The race in Tervuren is run in a beautiful forest, by a lake and a country house, bathed in both snow and winter sun. I made sure to soak up every detail and to commit it all to memory, and spent a great deal of time watching the riders warm-up and prepare. It was also a fantastic course for spectators, and I managed to see the race in several different locations. Kupfernagel won the women’s race, but almost more impressive was the stunning comeback from near last place on the first lap by Vos. We simply couldn’t believe it. In the men’s, Albert held Nys at arms length, digging deep for a valuable moral boost, one week before the Belgian Championships.
And some of the people I met...?
I don't think I've ever been so upset about a holiday coming to an end. I'll be back.

Love your photos and the report!
Thanks so much for taking the time to share these. Much appreciated!

Yeah, sure… THE rider :p
Thanks a lot for this amazing job, love it!
Um. Yes. Ok. I did stand in front of Styby for...quit a long time. He was so smiley! ;)
De cross gaat door!
Oh my...am I digging myself into an unfortunate hole here?
Gah, even that sounds rude! I’ll just shut up ;)
De cross gaat door!
fascinating collection of headgear ;-)

glad to hear it
I was worried for a while.

This is great
It looks and sounds like you had a great time. Some nice race action photos at the top.
However, it’s all the other ones that tell the story of being at the races. Like the shots of people setting up or walking along the tree-lined road; the standing around in a field; and my favourite – the one of Stybar (I think) warming up from behind, with rainbow bands on the van and crowd watching him over on the left.
Yes, I like that Styby one! It shows the crush that ensues when a top rider emerges from the shelter of the camper!
Nys only comes out to get to the start line as far as I could tell. Never saw him. We had less of a crush around ours (don’t they know who I am?!?) but we still got our fair share of ‘cross weasels’ as they’ve become known at the Chainstay, taking multiple rider fan cards from us at EVERY race…what the hell they do with them I have no idea. The race shots of Lux were taken on Gregg’s camera, which is a hell of a lot better than mine…mine is just a little point and click thingy, and isn’t so good with moving objects, especially in gloomy light, which is why there are more of the atmosphere type ones here!

Chainstay Question.
A friend of mine is heading to Belgium for the week leading up to the Ronde and he is looking into the Chainstay for accomodations. What is the general opinion of it? reasonably priced? clean? relatively private, etc? Thanks.
I can't praise it highly enough.
It’s a house rather than a hotel so perhaps not ‘private’ in that sense, but it was so much more fun for it, and I felt totally at home. I was slightly nervous about being the only non pro guest but that was no issue and I was fully assumed into the group! You have to make your own food, but people muck in and share. Totally clean in every way, yes. Gregg and Holly are great and will help with everything. You also get free transport everywhere which is a huge plus. I loved every second of it, thought it was great value, and am definitely going back. I’d book sooner rather than later for the classics though!

Hmmm, are they all properly housetrained?
or do you get the ’cross rider equivalent of the wet dog that wants to sit in the middle of the settee.
I don't know what you're suggesting about Albertina...

I can't think of a better place to stay than with a bunch of pro riders.
The inside talk alone would be worth sitting in on.

Monomaniacal freaks of nature.
Great stuff
I guess it’s a little like a (very exciting) prologue. You can see all the riders warming up and still see the race.

Yea, mud-splatters and rainbow stripes!
