Giro d'Italia 2012 Presentation LIVE

Barely did we put the 2011 season to bed with Il Lombardia before it's time to mock look forward to 2012. The presentation of the 2012 Giro route will no doubt be packed with glitz, glamour, scantily clad models and hairgel. Lots of hairgel. Don't miss it.

Live video: 15:00 CEST (09:00 US EDT, 00:00 AUS EDT)
Video: Livestreaming worldwide via the excellent  GazzettaTV

Sterrato is an understatement

The first 8km are “tarmaced” then at you get to this point

Or seen from the close up

And that continues for 3km, with patches also reaching 20%. The one promise they made was that all descents are on proper roads. Well apart from the promise that a bit further on it will be in slightly better condition than it is now come Giro time

by Monty. on Oct 16, 2011 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions

looks fun!

I have descended the side they will descend and it’s generally a fair bit wider than the ascent, or the tradiotinal lower Mortirolo ascent. But still pretty crazy for a race at times

The final three days are epic but the rest of course... meh

Guess they didn’t want a repeat of last year with Contador crushing everyone by stage 9… That Lecco uphill finish looks like the Plancher des Belles Filles in the Tour and they don’t have anything as good as the Grand Colombier or the Glandon in the middle of the race. But yeah, the last three days should bring more fireworks than Toulouse-Brive, Brive TT and Champs Elysées…

meh meh meh

The course has two epic stages, six other stages that end uphill in some fashion and a few more lumpy stages. Plus it has stages for those that like sprints.
I refuse to think this won’t make for every bit as exciting racing as other years. It will just include more riders than the pure climbers is all. And since that tends to be a pretty suspect group I can’t say that is an entirely bad idea either.

This is why I was a bit concerned at the presentation

They really had all the focus and publicity aimed at that stage. That seems totally crazy (with the Ventoux 2009 in mind) to make everything a buildup to one single HUGE stage. Especially when it may all get snow-cancelled.

I can out meh you Jens

I can also pretty much guarantee the first two uphill finishes will see no significance whatsoever. What has made the Giro so exciting(for me at least) are the fun mid mountain days littered in between big mountain days. They have completely negated Montelupone by, in typical Tour style, putting it 40km out and except for that there is one other intermediate day. There are way too many days without some type of challenge which could shake things up within the stage. Yes the last 5 mountain stages look epic, but two weeks of a sleeper to get to them is not what the Giro is about. And yes I realize the GC race is often back loaded in the Giro, I’m not annoyed by that, it’s the excitement of individual stages that I’m not seeing here. They should have at least put in another long ITT somewhere.

"Weltmeister!!" Zwei mal: 2010-2011...und weiter gehts

by Phil H. on Oct 16, 2011 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I dunno how this differs?

After the flat start in Denmark which is bound to be dull except for the big crowds and the enthusiasm you have the TTT where the favs will need to make a bit of a mark. Then a sprint followed by a lumpy breakaway stage. After that you get a pedalibile MTF on stage 7 just like Montevergine last year, a stage 8 with a short but steep section in the climb near the finish which will be a great launchpad.

Sure there is no Etna equivalent but there is still challenging terrain at the Cinque Terre before all hell breaks lose on st 14 to Cervinia. I just don’t see the huge problem. Nothing is fucked here dude.

by Jens on Oct 16, 2011 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

There are too many predictable stages

even those with little uphill kicks at the end are dead flat otherwise. I don’t care for that, I can make up my mind about how I like the Giro by myself thank you.

Some stages look HARDER than this past year

The final week looks MUCH harder than this past year’s. Also, once again we have a gazillion summit finishes, though not all are on the hardest of climbs

summit finishes or near summit finishes

stage 7
stage 8
stage 10
stage 14
stage 15
stage 16
stage 19
stage 20

a couple are “hilltop”, but this should still be a climbers tour. Nothing like 19 or 20 in last year’s giro. Would have been had Crostis not have been cancelled

by Derek Ortt on Oct 16, 2011 4:50 PM EDT reply actions

Definitely lots of hilltops

As Phil said, Montelupone looks wasted.
Stage 7, big ring all along as it’s a steady 5%. Stage 8 is somewhat interesting as it has 2km at 10% but followed by almost 5 km of flat run-in to the finish. 10 they don’t even give you a profile, it looks like 280 m in 8 km, so probably nothing over 5% max.
The Cinque Terre stage (12) actually looks really good with probably a lot of small roads and a nice downhill finish.
Stage 14 (Cervinia) has a rolling col de Joux and then Cervinia has a 5.5% average with about 1.5 km at 8% in the middle…
So before the Il Lombardi stage (15), you should still have a LOT of riders within a minute or so of each other, which I guess could provide very exciting racing but everybody will just wait the real mountains as they will all believe they can be a contender…

The Tour route looks a lot more balanced and is just missing a tough HC MTF in the Pyrénées IMO…

by FrenchKheldar on Oct 16, 2011 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

If Contador would ride

He’d take quite a bit of time on those smaller mountain stages as he did on the initial mountain stages this year

the problem is, those who likely will race the giro tend to be Schleck to the extreme in that they won’t attack until the final km of a major mountain stage
