Roller time!

So, I'm not sure about the rest of Europe or even the rest of Germany but around the Eifel, it's time for indoor cycling. Not only is is getting colder but the fog is so thick up here that visibility is around 60 meters at most. I recently picked up a set of Tacx rollers (15 Euro!) after suffering through years of riding a trainer. I thought it would be less boring and would improve my spin and balance. So far I can can see the benefits and it isn't as boring as riding a trainer, but it is still boring. So, anyone out there have some ideas for workouts that will break up the monotony and help me get more of my indoor riding?

I try to ride outside whenever the weather allows me. I don’t mind if it’s freezing, windy or foggy. As long as it’s dry, I’ll ride outside during the weekends. I’ll even ride outside when it rains and the temperatures are above 5°C. But snow, ice and sub 5°C conditions combined with rain = trainer time. I also use the trainer or roller for late evening rides. And the last couple of years we’ve had some harsh winters over here, so I’ve spent a lot of time riding indoors.
I like to use the trainer for longer sessions (2-3 hours). The problem with the trainer is that I can’t motivate myself to dig deep, so I stay in the saddle and brainlessly spin around for as long as I can. I usually watch series or films while I’m riding. They make the time go by faster. Series are better as one episode lasts about 50 minutes so you get the impressions these pauses are a small reward.
The rollers are less boring, as you have to stay focused more. I find them also easier to do intervals and harder rides. The faster you spin around, the better you keep your balance, so they’re definitely good for your cadence.
If TV or films get boring after a while and you own a Garmin bike computer, you may also try trainerroad.com (see also this review).
Another thing that worked well for me was inviting some friends over at my house, they brought their own bike and trainer. We set the trainers up so that we faced each other and we could talk during our workout. That was very helpful too.

Thanks for the suggestions

I cannot bring myself to ride on the trainer at all. I have also found that riding a big gear helps with the balance and is easier to get the heart rate up. As for riding in the fog, I live out in farmland where there are no lights so riding in the fog up here in the hills of the Eifel/Ardens is super dangerous and it is about -1°C right now.

Yep, I was pondering do it this year

You don’t really see much cross country skiing around here. There’s often not enough snow, just really cold. Weather in the Eifel area is shit much of the year, not very consistent or predictable.

Tons of people are out here on the weekends on roller skis

many of them training for Vasaloppet. It’s a very common “challenge” between friends/colleagues/ and people working to get fit. Mostly here down south they have very little chance of actually training on snow so roller skis it is.

yeah

Not for everyday but:

http://www.thesufferfest.com/ videos are excellent for an hour extreme workout. It’s about the only way I can get my heart rate up indoors.

Separately, I find listening to podcasts helps kill the boredom. I find them better than music because my mind has to engage more.

But I agree with Broerie, as long as the roads aren’t treachourously slippery, I prefer getting outdoors regardless of the temperature.

One of my favourite French words: La cagoule (balaclava).

I'd love to ride outside

but with the fog and the very real potential for black ice around here, that’s unfortunately out. I fear that I won’t see the outdoors on my bike until about March. I will probably have to stick with running this winter and hope for a few sunny, warmish days.

+1 to the sufferfest videos

Although personally the longest i ever lasted on a trainer was 40 to 60 minutes. Just no way i could take any more than that. On the other hand, i can manage to get a seriously intense, albeit short, workout on a trainer, and those sufferfest videos make it pretty fun and way easier. The titles and stuff are pretty hokey, but i liked the one i tried. Another thing that i liked was that my trainer had a power reading. I couldn’t care less about how accurate it was, it gave me some numbers to work for, and that was also good motivation.

Alas i finally sold my trainer – our apartment was just too small and cramped and i very rarely used it. Now i’ve moved and have space for a trainer, but no more trainer, d’oh! I’m just going to try to get out for 1-2 hour rides on weekday mornings all that i can and longer rides the weekend when i can. I’m sure there will be some cold and rainy weeks where i’ll wish i had a trainer, but mostly the weather around here is pretty accommodating. Plus around here i find a lot of the winter riding to be just gorgeous – the sun, clouds and sea combine to do some amazing things together much of the winter. For now it’s just gorgeous and sunny. Ok, i’ll do it myself. Banned!

Is there a la cagoule for les fesses?

I found last winter I really loved riding on those cold days as long as I adjusted my clothing accordingly. Only issue I couldn’t fix was freezing my ass off.

I know, it's odd

I suppose I was smart about, gloves, layers and socks but there is only so much you can do ……….there. And I did get cold feet too but that is just annoying and I could live with it. The cold ass/lower back however really locked me up and made me lose the little power I had to begin with.

Podcasts sound interesting

Any tips on good ones? It’s something I have completely ignored until now. Rewatching films and TV shows just doesn’t hold my interest on the trainer and they are almost counterproductive, time moves slower almost.

Hmmmm.......Developing an idea in my head....Give me a few to organize it...

Can we develope some sort of competition between the ones that want to join? I mean the ones that have some sort of recording device… so we can track the progress of each one..
The idea is to touch the inner competitor that everyone has inside… That will sure get someone going… I will be in when i am not riding outside for sure..!

Personally I like watching MTB world cup or cx races I can find video of

More interesting than watching the peleton roll along for an hour in Liege-Bastogne-Liege. Easier to lose yourself in the race.

Also, a lot of music. I prefer something with a lot of beat, a lot of DJ remixes. Not what I listen to off the bike really, but it sure works. Pick whatever you think of when you envision getting super pumped up for something (ride, race, anything).

yeah music is good

music and a plan. So many minutes of this effort or this power or whatever, then rest, and so on. Or the sufferfest things do all that for you.

by yeehoo on Nov 15, 2011 11:04 AM EST up reply actions

I accepted that it's going to be boring inside either way.

I just stopped using rollers and bought a trainer, so that at least I’m stable and can watch a protable media player or something while I ride. I find that harder on rollers.

I do as others have said though and try get out as much as possible. I have an old metal-framed MTB with lockout that I use – pump the tires close to bursting and keep it in the big gears. Bit of interval training, it’s pretty handy for your fitness actually because it’s so inefficient.

by ike2112 on Nov 15, 2011 12:43 PM EST reply actions

I like power pyramids myself - you can do them on the road, on a trainer, or on rollers

Here’s the gist:

10-15 min warm up. Then go as hard as you can for the following prescribed amount of time followed by an equal recovery period:

30 seconds / 45 secs / 1 min / 2 min / 3 min / 4 min, then back down in descending order (4, 3, 2, 1, etc).

You can knock the whole thing out in about 50-60 minutes depending on warm up and cool down, and you get 22+ minutes of all out effort. Incredibly effective and efficient.

All I've had today is, like, six gummy bears and some scotch.

i think i'm gonna buy me some rollers

and learn how to play mariogolf 64 while riding them. if that gets boring, i’m forever giving up on stationary cycling.

not sure why some people prefer them

i guess more road-like feel as you have to balance, but less resistance. some people must like that better than more resistance and no balance. it just seems that all the cool kids are doing it, so i figured i might as well try. plus there’s the whole danger aspect that’s appealing.

helmet or no helmet people?

no helmet

you just have to be (a little) more focussed on rollers, so the time goes by faster. That’s all.
Oh and spinning at a high cadence makes it easier to keep your balance, so it helps your cadence too

It's time for the yearly shout-out to my avatar photo

Rollers = less resistance is said by people who’ve never ridden old American Classic rollers. Kreitler makes some with good resistance as well.

The ONLY trainer I’d consider replacing my rollers with would be the Lemond.

Now, indoor riding for me is all about structure: have a structured workout and a way to monitor it (trainerroad is good if you’ll be watching videos via computer monitor anyway. That way every minute has a purpose—and, it’s possible to disappear into the flow of the workout.

Did you say time for Roller... Blades?

I"m all into it (inline skates if you prefer), even got a couple neighbors dusting theirs off and out rolling. Charleston is doing it’s “It’s Winter… no it’s Fall… no it’s Summer” thing. But for the most part it’s beautiful here right now.
