Morning...! I am reading...!
Strava...? Mission accomplished.. Thanks everyone..! Currently at 17..! If we keep going like this we will end up TOP 10..! I am not pushing it but if it happens.... happens..!
Nice ride by Helen Wyman
…especially considering she’s been feeling under the weather with a virus lately. I reckon she could have been in the top 3 otherwise.
I don't like the look of that sand one bit!
Sand is difficult on my mountain bike with its 5.84cm wide tyres, never mind on skinny CX tyres!

The entire nation of Netherlands laughs
as two belgians sprint each other…………..for 6th or 7th place in the U23…….behind 734 dutch riders (by the looks of all the orange)
The entire nation of Netherlands breathes a sigh of relief
that U23 CX riders don’t have radios for the Rabo DS to dictate “tactics”
The Rabo DS is Groenendaal, that shouldn't be too bad.
Although Erik Dekker used to be a good tactician as well, as an active cyclist…

Question: is there a future for Belgian cyclocross? ;)
by blackswangreen on Nov 26, 2011 9:34 AM EST up reply actions
Enjoy it while it lasts...
I’m kidding of course, all these U23 Dutchies will turn to the road to reach mediocre placings in semi-classics.

By the way
It would have been “Major” Marshall Taylor’s birthday today. No connection to CX I know, but a worthy excuse to open a bottle of beer if you fancy one while watching the race.
Stybar: course is much tougher, hardest cross of the year for sure
Mmmmmmm :)
"Beer helps." -- Ant1.
Agree with him on that one
Some of the corners would be a challenge in a Land Rover by the looks of things, never mind on a bike.

Plus I’m fairly sure I saw a “Dune” sandworm back there…

Oh, is that what it is? I thought it was a spare inner tube.

is riding through sand more tiring than running through it...
…that’s the question.
I reckon running has to be easier
because your feet are only in contact with it for a short time. If you ride through, you have to overcome the resistance all the time.
by John Cyclopunk on Nov 26, 2011 12:42 PM EST up reply actions
Depends
on the depth/softness. There’s a tipping point in there someplace where you stop rolling and start sinking. Running is no picnic either, so if the sand is such that you can ride with any momentum, you ride. Obviously if it’s uphill the sand can’t have any real softness to it at all.
De cross gaat out that door.

Stybar, Pauwels both in white, early leaders
minor bunching up behind them now. Nys bad start but back.

If women's race is any indication....
…this race will have stages. Exhaustion is apparently a real factor on this course.
Oh, totally
Sand sucks the strength out of your legs.

Well, if I laid off the beer and curries and knocked the ciggies on the head, anyway.

Sporza is never going to get tired of the Stybar-stairs-story, are they?
(before last year’s worlds, Stybs’ coach told him to run 160 stairs. Stybar misunderstood and did 1.600)

Really impressed with Aeronauts here...
…would have expected him to have faded by now.
For the detailed-oriented
K-Pow is a leftie – note how he carries his bike on the other shoulder than everyone else
I love the variation among spectators in European races
Over here, it’d be 99% middle-aged men (ie, people like me). Over there, there are kids, old women, families…just about every sort of person.
Cross more than road races
I think an hour of constant action is enough to keep the kids occupied.
Unless there are slides.
Seems to be, doesn't it?
I think kids just naturally like the mud too.

I would have loved that as a kiddy!

Bartje Aernouts always seems to waste a little bit too much energy mid-race.
Lacks self confidence that he might be able to podium?
Smart tactics,
take the left trail higher up in the beginning, use gravity to keep speed towards the end, switching to the lower trail.
"Beer helps." -- Ant1.
pretty awesome sand section riding by Sven there!
only guy I’ve seen ride the whole thing
I go up da hills den I go down da hills
Inclined to agree
I thought it was Stybar’s, but looking otherwise.

Looked like me trying to ride home from the pub for a moment there

yeah, I don't like his style too much either
Nys, Styby and Albert always do their share of the work. Pauwels? Not so much.
Oh, phew – it’s just someone with a similar car.
by John Cyclopunk on Nov 26, 2011 10:02 AM EST up reply actions
Oh this is gonna be ugly.
Nys totally cut Pauwels off.
this will be interesting.
Old men will come to the table and decide.
Yeah, but that looked even worse on replay.
He practically looked back to see where Pauwels was.
He prob feels a little dirty on the inside
well, ok no he doesn’t.

I like that Sven squeezed him out
It’s not dancing ffs.
All I've had today is, like, six gummy bears and some scotch.
Nys came all the way from one barrier to the other...
but it didn’t look totally egregious to me, he did not zig-zag
Anyone can make mystakes
in the heat of the moment. He looks back nys is on his wheel by his right. He sprints from one side to other of the road in a smooth way. (So Pauwels is always believing he can go through ‘till he realizes he can’t and protests).
Nys is a champion. But he acted wrong here, IMO
Surprised by that
because that look and the arm gesture was unmistakably “FU, mate.” Good for him though – like Drew says, it’s not dancing.

Sven
I’m very happy, I had one of the better days of the season. At a crucial moment, two laps from the finish I made a really stupid mistake, I thought I lost the race there. Then it was a sprint, I had to go into the corner first. And then I took a line at a moment when he wasn’t next to me, he was behind me. I would never do that if he were next to me, that’d be dangerous. Maybe something I learned from someone who is now Pauwels’ DS, who became Belgian champ like that once.*
When I came out of the corner I almost slipped and fell. I don’t think I made a mistake. But if I did make a mistake the UCI needs to take their responsibility. I closed the door, but I did it within regulations.
*De Clercq, fyi
Yeah, for the "international signal".

Well, it turns out that Mordechai's apparent love of CX was but a brief flirtation...
He slept right through that. But then, it’s a hard life being a ferret.
by John Cyclopunk on Nov 26, 2011 10:14 AM EST reply actions
well, on the bright side.
Such an episode can be great for Pauwels popularity/appeal
Pauwels' DS
De Clercq filed a complaint, but they assume the result isn’t going to change. They’re angry that Nys’ knee bumped into Pauwels’ steering wheel twice.
The UCI has seen the sprint and are still discussing.
De Clercq is still pissed about the 2000 WC ;-)
All I've had today is, like, six gummy bears and some scotch.
One of my fave's to watch (have it on VHS)
How much shit did Sven take in Belgium for that and for how long?

Strangely enough.

K-Pow
He starts all the way to the left and ends to the right. It was he same in Gavere, but there I still had room. Now I had no room. I was halfway beside him. If I had sprinted on, I would’ve crashed. The complaint has been rejected? Yoah. Well. I’m happy today went well. Nys was better in the sand, but I was better on the straight stretches. I’m happy it well.
(He didn’t look happy)
Only thing I can think of is that he could have gone around.
Was he beside Sven, or behind him trying to come through?
He picked a crappy line, and once he was committed Sven closed the door on him
Looked perfectly fine to me.
All I've had today is, like, six gummy bears and some scotch.
Bartje
I have mixed feelings in the end. In hindsight, maybe I stayed too far back too often, raced in 4th place for too long. I was really good in the sand, maybe if I had raced in the front more often the gap to Nys and Pauwels would’ve been smaller. Of course, I don’t stand much of a chance in a sprint but still… Mixed feelings.
Fun morning
I overslept but the laatste ronde was awesome. Sorry I missed the chatter. So people are following Drew now?

Ummm
much more that that, You’ll find pretty much everything you need on the site . Most interesting imo is the debate between De Clercq and the jury (in french). The jury say ‘Nys never endangered Pauwels, therefore he doesn’t need to be DQ’d’.
I looked up the rules:
Sprints
2.3.036 Riders shall be strictly forbidden to deviate from the lane they selected when launching into the
sprint and, in so doing, endangering others.
The jury also added that you can’t compare a cx sprint to a sprint in the TdF. That’s a strange interpretation IMO. A sprint is a sprint, weather it’s in koksijde or in Pau.
Nys clearly wanted to block Pauwels. He even crossed the entire width of the road. If that’s not a DQ…

So much to like about that top 10! The return of Marianne Vos, who must’ve started WAY back. And Daphny – this is her final season, right? She said she retires this year…. and 3 Brits in the top 10 – wooo, the British hegemony is on it’s way! We’ve got as many Brits up there as Dutchies!
Aka Pigeons!

That was funny as hell
His painface at the end, too! When he’s rolling across the line, completely exhausted, with the other 2 sprinting like crazy behind him. When you’re too tired even for a \o/, you know it’s been a great race!

Superb frame-by-frame gallery of *that* sprint!
Not entirely sure why Pauwels kept following Nys’ wheel, but I am fairly useless!
Aka Pigeons!
Because he already had overlap, I guess
and didn’t think Nys would take him all the way to the other barrier line. (“Why, WHY! Does Nys cross the road?!”)
"Beer helps." -- Ant1.
Definitely
the overlap. If they weren’t overlapping, that Nys move gets renamed from “closing the door” to “opening the door”.
