World Cup Namur, a Photo Essay
You've seen the results (Sven Nys and Marianne Vos won), but have you seen just how ridiculously muddy it was? A friend of the cafe provided some excellent pictures for us all to enjoy.
The Elite Men podium: Nys, Albert, Vantornout
Marianne Vos works her way down one of the gnarliest descents of the season.
Daphny Van Den Brant descends.
Elite Women's podium: Vos, Chainel-Leferve, and Compton
Splash! Slop was the name of the game on Sunday after two weeks of rain in Belgium.
Lars Boom! joined the fun today but was decidedly off the pace, finishing in 28th.
Niels Albert showed no signs of missing weeks of competition - he finished second on the day.
Kevin Pauwels finished fourth and lost his lead in the World Cup rankings. Sven Nys now leads by five points.
Who will run and who will ride?

Holy something or other
That Marianne descending picture is awesome. As is the Niels Albert shot. How come his face is so white when everything else is so muddy?! And the splish splash puddle Tommeke Meeusen is creating is ace too. Thanks for these!
All the photos are fantastic but that first one is particularly telling
From my stream you couldn’t see how rooty it was, and yet everyone was dropping down that slope like it was no big thing.
From doing a little racing of my own, I can assure you it was a big thing.
All I've had today is, like, six gummy bears and some scotch.
Damn
I thought those were pythons.

I lurv the Niels shot.
Especially since it’s so black around him. It’s like he’s some sort of cross monster emerging from the night to snatch babies. Or young girl’s hearts, more likely.

Picture from Niels...
I just took took the picture with concentrated ‘full flash ’ on the face of Niels ,that’s why only his face is ‘white’ and the rest is getter darker ..

I prefer the "cross monster emerging from the night to snatch babies" theory
He’s probably angry because he was woken up by everyone riding down the front of his lair.
Me
I love seeing Daphne VDB cranking that rear brake. Story of my CX career: replacing those rear pads. A lot.

I finally discovered the need to replace mine after my Bramble Patch Incident.
This was something I do not wish to repeat.

Not
if you’re descending into a slick corner.

Oh yeah?
You around next week and if so, care to ride? I’ll break out the MB.

Wonderful pictures!
Man, if people think I made controversial decisions in 2011, you're gonna be absolutely pooping yourself with what's to come in 2012--Jonathan Vaughters
I love your pictures!
THANKS
It seems as though Cavendish rides faster on some climbs than the fastest climbers in front of the race. Danilo Hondo
Oh wonderful! Amazing pictures!
That descent looks absolutely heinous! All those muddy slippery roots! Aaaaaargh! I’d have cried.

Hadn't realised Compton dropped her chain and crashed
There are some post-race quotes from her & Vos: http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/dropped-chain-cancels-direct-vos-and-compton-duel

the sporza coverage didn't do that descent justice
I knew it was steep and muddy but had no idea of the number of roots or how hard it really was.
To be fair they are pros and they are nuts,
but holy christ where those descents impressive.
All I've had today is, like, six gummy bears and some scotch.
I really want one like that in a race next season
Mostly for the spectacle. And because the more ridiculous cross is, the better.
