What non-VDS races did you watch in 2011?

In the discussion on the VDS calendar Broerie mentioned smaller races that were available to watch via feed but weren't included in the VDS. As my memory is, let's say, limited I'm asking for some help here. What races can you remember watching this year that were not VDS races?

I couldn't deal with the time zones for that.

The finale always seemed to be when I was walking to work.

Asturias?

I remember taking a screenshot of Schumi’s win before his teammate Zaballa, so the race must have had a stream.

yep, always has. runs the same time as romandie, and subida al naranco is now tacked on as the final stage, as opposed to a separate race

and chechu, barredo, and samu tend to do the color commentary

Yes we did have a live stream last year, it was posted here

We can add that race to the list.

There's maybe more of an arguments for downgrading it from 4 to 5

because the field is so small. Should something be a top classic when half (literally) of the top teams are not invited?

(I am taking all due precautions for my dog’s welfare)

by straw dog on Dec 11, 2011 11:31 AM EST up reply actions

I wouldn't downgrade it.

It’s a terrific race, even if we do have to watch it on delay. True, the invitation process seems to lack a certain logic (not inviting former winners? what?), but the teams that do get to go tend to send top riders and take it seriously.

by majope on Dec 11, 2011 11:49 AM EST up reply actions

I too love the race.

I just struggle with the idea that a race with 112 starters can be a top classic.
And of the 112 starters (14 teams), we had
Colnago – no finishers
De Rosa – 1 finisher
TT1 – 2 finishers

by straw dog on Dec 11, 2011 12:10 PM EST up reply actions

Low no of finishers is an indicator of a harder race surely?

The organizers keep citing logistics as the reason for a smaller field. The small roads make the big caravan difficult. Personally I think the prestige of the race among the peloton is a much more important factor than number of starters/finishers. Not many finish the Worlds RR either but that means little.

by Jens on Dec 11, 2011 12:35 PM EST up reply actions

Sometimes that's true.

But it can also mean that many of the starters are not elite riders – as is the case in the WCRR.
Only 14 teams were invited, and my point is that it wasn’t even 14 of the best teams.

My gripe is with the organizers. I think this is a fantastic race, and they are doing it a disservice with their bizarre invitations policy. If logisitics dictate a limited field, and you want this to be the great classic that it surely can be, you can’t include 4 or 5 third rate teams and leave out prior winners on Pro Tour teams.

by straw dog on Dec 11, 2011 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

It's a category 1.1, though.

That means max 50% Pro Teams. I don’t know how they choose which Pro Teams to invite—although I suspect the Italian teams are a shoe-in—but they can’t have more than 7. However, if they could get it reclassified as 1.HC, they could go up to 10 Pro Teams (70% instead of 50%).

Ah, I wasn’t aware of the 1.1 rule. I guess normally you don’t notice because the total field size isn’t restricted.

grand prix de fourmies 1.HC

and here’s how I know:
\

It happened to be well televised and to have a lot of relative unknowns and bona fide unknowns going completely hell-for-leather.

One can argue, based on recent entries in the past winners list, a certain level of importance. It’s won either by warhorses or guys who’re already on a solid path to being a big thing.

You could combine them and end up with "fire ants in the legs"

but I imagine that would be quite painful.

No it doesn't count

But we do feel sorry for you and award you a 100p headstart in 2012 to help ease the pain and suffering. Maybe one day you can look at a hotdog again without crying
