Giro d'Italia Wildcards

Dolomiti Giro d'Italia By Susie Hartigan

Announced today, article at the Gazzetta. Five wildcards plus the other 18 teams means that there will be 23 teams and 207 riders in the Giro.

- Acqua & Sapone (Ita)
- Androni Giocattoli (Ita)
- Colnago-CSF (Ita)
- Farnese Vini-Neri Sottoli (GB)
- Geox-TMC (Spa).

Is it May yet? Actually, I hope not since it means I missed the Spring Classics season. But really, hurry up anyway. Did you know that I need ten more words to make it 75?

Hmmm

I though the limit was 22 teams.

Vacansoleil is listed

I would assume permission from the UCI was needed to invite 23 teams and that brinkmanship was Vacansoleil’s invite was involved.

Don't think the rules say anything about how many teams that are allowed

But there’s a 200 rider limit. Some races have 25 teams, like Paris-Roubaix last year.

If they're going to invite that many teams

I don’t know why they didn’t let PdC put together a team and join in the fun!

Hm

I like the idea. But the course is a little climby for me. Maybe Gavia or Sminer can be our GC threat and I’ll just go stage hunting. In southern towns… where the day prizes are more interesting.

Add "Vacansoleil"

as the “V” entry in the alphabetical catalog of why the UCI is the worst organization ever. So they made some useless mutterings about reconsidering their status, which amounted to nothing besides destabilizing a team and some sponsors, if only briefly. I guess you could also file that one under “P” for “pointless political posturing.”

The fact the UCI have allowed Zom to invite 25

Means we get all the teams we wanted, including De-rosa, who i thought were going to miss out.

The line up of Riders, the Parcours…

Last years Giro was epic beyond belief.

This years is something to tell the kids when they come along.

IT IS GOING TO BE AMAZING.

by Millsy_1989 on Mar 7, 2011 2:54 PM EST reply actions

But inviting more teams is more control in the peloton.

Could be a not open race is less spectacle.. I’m curious to see how it is going to work out

Is he a comedian?

I don’t see him as a sprinter, but a rider for the more challenging stages. I would have been really surprised if TT1 got a spot. Not that RCS hasn’t surprised us before, that NGC Medical-whatever team was selected, at first, in 2008.

Badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger...

by TheFigurehead on Mar 7, 2011 5:14 PM EST up reply actions

Was meant more as a joke

I don’t know who or wtf kind of rider Kocjan is, but a quick glance around the webbie shows that he and the rest of the cycling world see him as a sprinter.

Kocjan, who finished a strong second last Saturday in the GP Regio Insubrica in Varese and 4th the following day at the GP Citta di Lugano in Switzerland, finished 10th at the Giro del Friuli in 2010, and said the long, flat finish would likely mean a bunch sprint on Thursday.

"The course changes every year, and the finish on Thursday is in a completely different town from 2010. The five finishing circuits are hard, and the other teams will be going full gas on the last pass up the climb. I think if I can show the same form I had last weekend in Varese and Lugano I can get to the finish in the first group," said Kocjan

Do I really think he can take out the likes of Cav and Bennati, idk, but no.

"It's a lovely thing, feeling that momentum. If you're lucky, it's also about grace." Tim Winton

by sminer on Mar 7, 2011 9:52 PM EST up reply actions

That quote doesn't say he's a sprinter

Perhaps he was a few years ago, but nowadays he gets result when there are a few hills here and there. Like in Varese and Lugano, none of them were bunch sprints (though it would’ve been funny to see Basso win a bunch gallop).

Badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger...

by TheFigurehead on Mar 8, 2011 2:32 AM EST up reply actions

Well there were several pages that specifically referred to him as a sprinter

but he does seem more as you describe him.

VDS regrets already

I assumed Geox had been given the bum steer this year. Apparently not. Good for them, bad for me.

yep

Considered & rejected Menchov. Felline will just have to not fall off his bike & get multiple stage wins.

And Duarte, Monsalve, Serpa and Rujano.
Brilliant choice of wildcards IMO

by broerie on Mar 8, 2011 2:49 AM EST up reply actions

I didn't risk picking Menchov

but I was hoping that Geox would get the big invites so that riders like Ratto and Pelucchi would get a chance to ride for themselves in smaller races.
