Woo hoo. Deignan makes Team The Shack. Come on Ireland, we want a maglia rosa

Probably been told to stay at home after that fuck up in the Fleche.

He was withdrawn from the Giro weeks ago

and the “fuckup” consisted of crashing into another fallen rider.

by Jens on Apr 24, 2011 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

The other was his cousin and the two had been nattering away when the crash happened. He was supposed to be targetting Fleche, not swapping family gossip :)

Well it makes for a fun joke

but I highly doubt nattering played any sort of role. Bad luck is bad luck. The other rider might as well have been Amelia Earhart’s great-grandmother and it wouldn’t have made the least bit of difference I suspect.

by Jens on Apr 24, 2011 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Aye, bad luck is bad luck. And bad luck at Lombardy (which he was targeted for) and the Fleche (which he was targeted for) is damned unlucky.

Farrar – I really would have thought he’d do Cali instead being that it’s more sprinter friendly then the Giro…

Not trying to start a debate...

…just saying that the last time he was in their race he was busted for CERA. If it were my race, I’d leave him out. How? My race, my rules. The tour’s done it, so if they want to appeal to CAS go for it.

if i were a race organizer, i’d have a rule that says anyone who tests positive in my race is banned for life.

"Ants don’t worry, they operate like a fantastic team, they accept obstacles and deal with them in a positive manner, they don’t complain and remain positive. An ant doesn’t work on emotion, is proactive and always chooses the ant role."

And what's up with Popovych being the 'shack captain?

Though it looks like McEwen and Machado are selected for something, as well.

Machado is the designated captain

Not sure how they assign those numbers?

the #1's don't always mean that they are the G.C. leaders...i.e. Katusha...J-Rod is 2nd behind Pozatto

just depends on how the team does it. QS and Rabo (two examples I saw quickly) did it in alphabetical order

by Vlaanderen90 on Apr 21, 2011 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm guessing this can serve as an early smackdown thread right?

Well despite a lack of italian riders and without Nibali this year, la Tête dans le Guidon is still looking for big points at the Giro. What we lack in quantity we’ll make up in quality :)
- JRod and Igor Anton for the GC (top 5 for both?)
- Deignan for a handful of points to justify his low price :)

I got Ballan (Dude’s gotta be tired), Kristoff, Pozzovivo, Bennati, Klemme, Tiralongo, Pauwels & Le Mevel.

I’m a little disappointed Sky isn’t sending Uran but I have good sensations re: Le Mevel.

by addict on Apr 21, 2011 1:12 PM EDT reply actions

Cool

Not so sure the tour is a clear #2 this year.

No Basso in the Giro, so he at least is going all-in for the Tour. Which would suggest someone in Leaky management have promised him enough domestique firepower to be a serious contender.

Hope KoS makes the TdF then.

Warning... not everything I say should be taken entirely seriously

by addict on Apr 21, 2011 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Leaky is pretty international

So the Tour is more important to them but Giro is probably number 1 still. Basso can win a weaker tour this year so no point in wasting him at the giro when they have nibs

It's Timofey MOZGOD time
Ujiri for MVE
Karl for COY

Agree on the split squad

and that Basso wants to do the tour. Just think it is closer than it usually is for Leaky…

Bos was always rather lean for a track sprinter, but his transition is quite remarkable. To use Bos’ own analogy, it’s as if Usain Bolt were to start running marathons.

I have the opposite reaction, IF Contador is serious and has genuinely targetted this race

AC has not lost a GT he has raced since 2007. He is a guy who wins the TdF by minutes, against most of these names less the random italians. He is still firmly in his cycling prime, and has a DS who knows his sh1t. To me, he is the totally prohibitive favorite – he will blow all these guys out the water. [disclaimer – assuming his TdF form wasnt totally phama reliant]

On the other hand, in this years tdf, we have AS, who is at best unproven as a GT winner, Evans, Basso, a Sanchez or two, Wiggins perchance, and whichever complete unknown Garvelo manage to pull out of their hat. Assuming AC is out of tour contention one way or another, that is a really open field

Warning... not everything I say should be taken entirely seriously

by addict on Apr 21, 2011 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Which one of those guys can beat andy if he is on?

None can. The tour will be just as dull if we are basing this off assumptions. Bert may win by 5 minutes but he has not dominated every gt he has ever raced. The overall field is better than at the tour imo and that cannot be based on possible domination by one guy. Hell if the best in the world is there than that would just support my point

I would say both Evans and Basso have a legitimate shot

AS has (had? tbd) a serious TT weakness and no experience being the dominant force. Plus, he seems to make key mistakes. As someone more intelligent than me around these ’ere parts pointed out, he has NEVER won a pro stage race. And we are saying he is the prohibitive favorite?

I am a schlecklet fan, so hope he does. But, to use a baseball analogy, his swing has some serious holes in it.

Andy would have some if he had any ambition outside of july

I agree Basso could challenge but the terrain does not help. And the Tour has very little tting as well. Last year had bert not been there andy would have won easily. So back to the point that there are more guys at the giro who could win if bert is not as dominant as expected than there are guys at the Tour who could win if andy is not on.

Opening ttt should be interesting with this field

There aren’t a whole lot of crono specialists here, and some of the teams who did well in last year’s ttt (Katusha, Sky, Leaky) seem to be sending weaker crono squads this year.

At a glance, I’d give the edge to 2009 cronosquadre winners HTC to put Cav in the maglia rosa after stage one.

by Susie Hartigan on Apr 21, 2011 2:12 PM EDT reply actions

Saxo could also be a player

once they drop of couple of skinny climber-types in the first few k.

Interesting hodgepodge of a Giro team from Saxo, btw. With this being perhaps Contador’s only grand tour of the year, I would have thought they’d send all their big guns. And what on earth is Tosatto doing there? Road captain, I suppose.

by Susie Hartigan on Apr 21, 2011 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Tosatto can actually finish a GT and so solid work...I mean really, he doesn't DNF much (save pulling out of Vuelta on stage 18 or 19)

so he can be trusted to get work done. Still need someone to patrol the front.

Plus I think it has to do with Contador too…he likes his Spanish bunch, Larsson will provide tons of help, Gustov & Klostergaard on the front with Tosatto and Didier helping out wherever. I think its one of the strongest teams there

by Jens on Apr 21, 2011 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Good points about Tosatto

I’ve actually always kind of liked him (he was on my very first VDS team back in 2007).

I agree that Saxo is one of the strongest teams, not just for the ttt but for the whole race. I guess I’m mainly just surprised CAS isn’t there, after he did so well in last year’s Giro. I’m not much of a gambler, so I guess if I were running Saxo, I’d put everything I had behind their best chance for a grand tour win this year – Contador at the Giro – rather than holding something back in the hopes of doing well at the Tour.

Then again, Cali has also always been an important race for Saxo.

by Susie Hartigan on Apr 21, 2011 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the issue might be

that CAS was promised free reigns last Giro but lost out to injury and when he was to get that chance again the Vuelta was the best choice.
Also CAS is a very popular , high profile rider in Denmark so they want him at the Tour and also want to give him the best possible training for the Worlds in Copenhagen and that means Vuelta. CAS will be a key player in helping Breschel go for the win just as he has been these last two years. Riis can’t afford to (and doesn’t want to) screw with his prep (like he did with Matti last year)

by Jens on Apr 21, 2011 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Interesting

thanks for info. I was just assuming CAS would go to Cali with Richie, but I see what you mean about races later on the calendar being more important for him than either of the May races.

by Susie Hartigan on Apr 21, 2011 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

CAS is the local Jens!

Always good for an outspoken, drastic, funny comment (plus he does well) . The Tour is a major summer event in Denmark with about 2 hours of pre/post-stage coverage each day, plus all the available racefeeds broadcast in their entirety. Starting last year they had almost as ambitious Vuelta coverage too (ASO deal?) . So it makes sense to use CAS there if for no other reason.
