Women's Ronde van Vlaanderen: post-race fun!
I'll start with a pre-emptive apology - we get a lot of the post-race info from the women's racing in little bits & pieces, so this is likely to be edited as more turns up. But the results are right (hopefully!) - and as we find video, photos and more info, they'll be added to the comments - and if you see any, please add too!
The race was fast from the word go, and it seems that at 40km they were still all together (except for all the shelled riders!) but by 60km the race was split up into lots of small groups. There must have been a lot of little attacks, but the biggest one was when, at the 85km mark, Nederland Bloeit's Sarah Düster escaped with Lotto's Ludivine Henrion. With around 30km to go, their gap had reached 1 minute on TopSport's Lieselot Decroix, and threee minutes on a chase group of 17 that apparently was being lead by Emma Pooley at one point (Emma is a tiny little mountain goat/breakaway queen, who no one expects to excel on the cobbles).
Their monster effort was doomed, though, and they were caught just 2km from the finish-line - and it looked like the race would end with a bunch sprint, until right at the end, Nederland Bloeit Annemiek van Vleuten escaped for the win, taking her first World Cup, and the lead in the overall, with Gauss' Tatiana Antoshina following her for second. Marianne Vos, proving that the best preparation for riding the cobbles is winning Track World Cup titles the week before, won the chasing group's sprint for 3rd.

Thank you!
Another 1185 points today, from 8 out of the 10 riders we sent. BLISS!!!!!!!!!!

This is just what happens when I don't know enough to have sentimental favorites.
I did it all by the numbers. Sometimes that works.

Well, as long as you use them to taunt Will I think we are all winners.
(except Will of course but I think that goes without saying)
He will gain honor by providing a truly awesome pair of slippers.
I suggest these:

How about these? Not marmottes, exactly, but surely related:

Translation of the post race interview
They talk fast, fast, fast.
"I dreamt I could win. I’m in good shape so I thought "we’ll make it a good race". Ok, then you need some luck, but it worked."
SHE TALKS TOO FAST
Vos – "This is beautiful. Now that I saw the sprint on the tv, it’s so great to see Bloeit finish first."
Grace – "I’m riding well but the big win is missing. They’re looking to me more than last year now, and I don’t have a sprint, so that’s hard."
Vos – "It’s great to race on the same day as the men, because the audience is there. And that Grace won last year is good too, for the Belgian audience."
Annemiek – "It’s so much better to ride with an audience. When you ride on De Muur, that audience is so great. It really stimulates you."
Vos – "When Duster was away I was sure she’d stay away. But when she was alone we caught up with her fast."
Grace – "The chase was really disorganized. I did some work myself, but no one really cooperated. Emma Johansson and Emma Pooley did a lot of work too."
Vos – "I sprinted hard – it’s a world cup and it’s RVV, so yeah I wanted to be on the podium! But it wasn’t easy against Johansson."
Grace – "I have a race tomorrow, so I won’t party too hard."
Van Vleuten – "I race there too … but I’ll treat it as an afterparty."
I like tinkering with the boys.

Some riders' post-race reaction tweets
Emma Johansson:
4th – Shit! Now I have to wait another year :(
Happy to have the most and best supporters though… #athingthatmakesmelovethiscountry
Ellen van Dijk (HTC):
Bad day for me. Crashing, cramping, suffering. Obviously not good yet. Congrats to @AvVleuten for the great win. Judith 5th. #rvv #oef
Emma Trott:
Super proud to be part of such a super strong team! @AvVleuten and @marianne_vos amazing! What a day!
Bridie O’D:
It seemed as if my day was over many times, but Flanders is oft about mixed fortunes. Finished, flogged, relieved. http://twitpic.com/4gih4c
Can't believe I'm still top 10 wvds - holding on by the skin of my teeth!
Thankyou thankyou Emma J & Judith A & Olga Z & Sarah D!
AMAZING job, majope!
Jens, do we know where the highest Vos-based team is?
I see you have executed your cunning plan
To sit on and then blast past me at the critical section of the season. Sneaky…I won’t forget this next year!
Ha!
My cunning plan was to do it while climbing, not while dropping! ;-)

Jens is busy trying on slippers
but I get Dream Team (yeehoo) and Top Grils (Jetse B.) in a tie for 39th place with 1575 points.

Up to 28 from 32...
…not as good as Binda, but I’ll take 500 points.
(also, didn’t Evie Stevens win something at Redlands, or am I confused?)
Not yet.
Neben took the prologue, and Cliff-Ryan the first two stages. Only winners get points in Cat 6 stages. Stevens was 3rd on GC after yesterday, so if she hangs on there you’ll get some points (goes to 5th place).

Evie's out at Redlands, not won yet
She was 2nd on the prologue, final stage is tonight
(Amber Neben won prologue, Theresa Cliff-Ryan won stages 1 and 2 – there are race reports and photos at CN)

Rationalisation from an old-fashioned viewpoint towards women’s cycling, reportedly quite prevalent in Belgium.
In his defense
this might be the busiest day of his workyear so he might not be full of energy.
I think it boils down to that they produce for a belgian audience and correctly or not they don’t feel there is an interest in the women’s race. So they give it the same effort that they do any minor sportevent that merits a few minutes on the daily sportshow. And they don’t really get any criticism beyond that?
Sure, busy I knew
but almost insulting I did not expect. And if all that busi-ness led to inviting twatface Smeets before the race and crap post-race interviews with Chava & PhilGil, well, meh.
Hard to get the tone through the elves
But it’s pretty clear judging by Wuyts for ex. what the general sentiment toward the “little wimmin” is isn’t it? So critique might not be well understood or welcomed.
Missed the poststage but I always get the feeling that they have a pretty set agenda with their p-s interview. If the rider plays along it’s good TV but when they don’t get where KV is going with his questions it gets a bit awkward. Or as in the case with Flecha after OHN where he completely rebelled against their narrative and it ended up great because of it.
That studio bit
is up on You Tube, courtesy of Annemiek van Vleuten
Dear Dutch-speakers....
there seemed to be a couple of moments where they seemed a little bit non-plussed by some of the Qs… were they strange Qs? Or is it more that they’re not used to being interviewed like that? (doesn’t seem likely…)
Also, and translations would be most welcome…
by Sarah Connolly on Apr 4, 2011 6:41 AM EDT up reply actions
Ignore me re the translations
gs did that above!
But were the Qs odd?
by Sarah Connolly on Apr 4, 2011 6:53 AM EDT up reply actions
Same old same-o
Interviewer having a preconceived idea of a good narrative from his perspective and the riders not playing. “Did you ever think, did you even dream of winning the Ronde?” – “Well, yes.” – “But was it realistic, I mean, I guess it was?” – “Well, yes.”
Ah, ok, I see!
There was one Q where AvV looks at Vos, they look a bit confused, and like they can’t believe what was asked, that seemed intriguing!
by Sarah Connolly on Apr 4, 2011 7:28 AM EDT up reply actions
From memory,
that was when he asked if her attack was to put Vos in the driving seat or go FTW herself. To which: “Both. Having multiple believable contenders worked to our advantage,” or something like that.
This is all kinds of awesome. You know people talk about having cameras on bikes in races?
Well AA Drink-Leontien.nl did just that!
The video starts with the usual kind of backstage-with-the-team stuff, but then gives a bike’s eye view of bits of the race – including crashes, and the bike mechanics fixing up wheels and the like. I LOVE it! You should go and watch it!

2. to 5. ?

This article from the HTC Facebook page says no changes in GC today, so presumably same as yesterday:
1 Amber Neben (HTC Highroad Women)
2 Erinne Willock (Team TIBCO – To The Top)
3 Evelyn Stevens (HTC Highroad Women)
4 Carmen Small (Team TIBCO – To The Top)
5 Andrea Dvorak (Colavita Forno D’Asolo)

Quotes from Bronzini on her Flanders
"No," she told VeloNation in response to a question about whether she’d had a good day in the maglia irridata. "I’ve come from the track.
"I’ve done some special training for the track and now I’m bad on the roads," she explained. "I think my season begins at the end of April!"
But the best thing about the article? This last paragraph….
With the rewards still pitiful in women’s cycling, compared to the million euro contracts of the men, very few can afford to specialise, so the clashing of major events can cause all kinds of problems.
Yes indeed…. Put back the track World Cups to start in October, like they used to, run the Track World Champs at the end of February, happiness ensures. Well, except for Vos, who’d have problems with the class of CX & Cyclocross, but then, Vos IS unique!
I like her new hair a lot!
Her spikes were great, but that hair is very cute.
Mind you, I can’t wait to see how many rainbows she can fit onto her kit, especially in the Giro Donne. That Vaiano race, she had quite a few going on, but I think she can still add some more!

Marijn is brilliant even through the murk of Google translate
Fuck, I thought every time someone got too close. I’m here. You brake but I do not brake. I felt a slap to my right buttock, an Italian called “Occhio” because she wanted along. Will you along? Fuck. I sit here. And I gave my bike a swing to the right so that the brakes had to be Italian. She screamed evil.

I already know I'm doomed.
The returnees from this year’s team are destined to be not the ones who are earning me oodles of points, but the ones who almost took a stage in the Giro Donne or crashed just before she would surely have podiumed at Fleche or didn’t get many points but she’s so young and scrappy that you just know that next year when she’s a bit more experienced…you get the idea.
