More recognition for our Gavia!
I don't know if you've read today's Gerard Vroomen blog, but you really should, especially because it includes credit to our very own Gavia!
A few weeks ago in an interview with Gavia at the podium cafe, I mentioned that while women’s cycling deserves to be on TV and women riders are right to be upset with the lack of support within the cycling structure to make that happen, it is also important to look inward at what people can do themselves, not just at what they would like others to do.
"You can’t say, on the one hand, no one wants to watch us,
but at the same time you’re not on twitter yourself to promote your sport."[The quote in the article is slightly different, not so easy to get all the nuances right in a free-flowing interview, for the interviewer or the interviewed]. And strangely, there are far fewer women riders on twitter (or facebook) than men, even though on average they probably have more interesting things to say.
So then a funny thing happened. First off, a few women pros tweeted me that they read the interview and are now on twitter. That’s great, I hope that trend continues, also inside Garmin-Cervelo. Secondly, a lot of people jumped on the band wagon saying they would totally watch women cycling, if only the UCI would make such broadcasts happen.
Isn't that great? Not only does Vroomen talk about the interview, he also talks about the impact the interview - Gavia's interview - has had. That's fabulous! Go Gav! You really make a difference!

This is what Gav and I mean
when we say we want to cover Women’s Cycling more, because places like the Cafe can make an actual difference.

Somewhere I hear Frinking crying.
Good job Gav & Chris. Maybe the sport will grow so I can one day watch my daughters on TV tearing up Europe on something other then my Mastercard.
where the hell is Frinking?
RadioSilence…
Warning... not everything I say should be taken entirely seriously
he sometimes sits out races if he doesn't like the probable podium.
Hope it is nothing more than that!

I guess we are becoming more than just DDIFP’s, eh?

And just to be clear...
by “we”, I am not including myself in any way in her recognition. Gav is a star. She works her ass off here and she deserves whatever recognition she gets, and a whole lot more.

Crayons!
Gav is our “color” commentator. :)
It's not having what you want, it's wanting what you've got.
An interesting couple of sentences from that inty
Here, my friends, is the first part of what we hope will eventually be a two-part interview with Gerard Vroomen. This time, it’s women’s racing. Next time, we’ll give the dudes their due.
Did I miss the next time somewhere along the way?
Slightly O/T but still more recognition over at Velonation
Hushovd will put his name next to four other World Champions if he can manage to pull off the win in the Roubaix Velodrome on Sunday. Bernard Hinault was the last to do it, in 1981. Moser accomplished the feat in 1978, while Merckx did it 1968. Rik van Looy pulled off the astonishing World Champion Roubaix victory not once, but twice, and in consecutive years: 1961 and 1962.
