Tour of California Stage 1 LIVE

Shortened stage to 80 km, same finish as originally.

And now the stage is cancelled, moments before it was to begin. Smart call by the organizers. No time to play fast and loose with stage safety. No doubt this was a hard, hard decision for them, with untold costs to sponsors (who I hope are understanding). I say cheers to the org. They did the right thing.

Hey, anyone know when the PdC T-shirts are being sent?
Don’t remember who the direct contact is. But the two going to Ames IA, they can be sent now, if they’re ready… I have a vague sense they were supposed to be showing up by or around Tour of Cali time…

Hey hey hey

What it comes down to
Is that, as hard as it tries, SoCal is no DownUnder….
"Age and treachery will overcome youth and skill" - Fausto Coppi
Well, neither is downunder france, nor are either of them italy, nor is Spain Belgium, or vice versa.
I was biking along the beach in Santa Monica and also peeling down the Cornice at Mammoth a week ago, and both were great. It’s a kick to go from the beach to the slopes at Mammoth in 3 hours (now that there’s a direct flight, un-eco though that may be). I love it that they’ll still be skiing in Mammoth until July 4. Jagged young snow capped peaks, volcanism, sea breeze, kelp. And, heck, a woman in the gondola was complaining that she’d only gotten in 70 ski days this winter, because she’s now cycling 3 or 4 days a week, so she doesn’t have the energy to also ski 5 days. But when you’re in the high country, spring runs late, and weather can happen.
"luckily for me i was born with an extremely high hemassholecrit level. no pills needed." -ant1
My point - well hidden as it was
Is that by the nature of geography, it will always be difficult for a race to be held at this time of the year in the USA, that includes decent climbing, and that is not open to the vagaries of the weather.
You are right, that part of the USA is awesome in offering up the ability to enjoy both snow and surf. When I lived in LA I loved the fact that I could ride up to the ski fields on the Angeles Crest Highway (okay not Mammoth, but still) and in the same ride, then head down to Malibu Beach for an afternoon snack before heading home (sure I didn’t swim, I could have, but I find this side of the Pacific to freaking cold for a swim at any time of the year).
Aren’t many places in the world where you can do that….
The only way for the ATOC to avoid situations like today is to (a) move later in the year or (b) drop the mountains and become more like Qatar and Downunder.
(a) puts it in competition with the TDF and the traditional lead in races to that and (b) well, no one really wants (b) at this time of the year….
So while I love, LOVE the idea of this race expanding into something more serious, (for a whole bunch of reasons, mostly selfish) I just struggle to see how it will do so successfully.
"Age and treachery will overcome youth and skill" - Fausto Coppi
Maybe start in the south and go north?
"In addition, it also showed an enormous lack of respect to my dog, whose name they changed." - Oscar Pereiro
not sure what that does for you...
It’s not a question of buying one more week. Mammoth was in the 60’s and sunny 10 days ago, with 10 inches of snow before, and another 10 inches of cold fresh snow now (and a base of 10-20 feet). It’ll be 62 again (they say) in another 10 days, but there’s no reason it can’t get another 10 inches at the end of May or beginning of June—rare, but it happens.

Actual viable contingency plans / fully duplicate routes, in very different surroundings?
Today’s weather for Death Valley is a very pleasant high of 82 degrees…
I’m not saying you can duplicate high country in an infinite number of accessible places. But you can get striking scenery and climbs within a distance that’s not insane for a transfer. Situation’s been looking dicey for a couple of days; if they had a REAL contingency plan, any real plan B, they’d have gone to it earlier, and come out looking better.
"luckily for me i was born with an extremely high hemassholecrit level. no pills needed." -ant1
P.S. they knew they were having an unusual winter months ago.
All that el nino / la nina stuff, sunspots, whatever all else. Not looking past the “average” risk of snowfall was pretty darn optimistic.
"luckily for me i was born with an extremely high hemassholecrit level. no pills needed." -ant1
Oh, and that sounds like a heck of a ride, BTW.
Gotta be 65 miles by freeway… what’s the cycling route?
"luckily for me i was born with an extremely high hemassholecrit level. no pills needed." -ant1
That was definitely an all-day kind of ride, well over 100 miles.
Start in Pasadena, head up Angeles Crest Highway until the snow plows stop doing their stuff, then head back down. I forget the details, but I think that then head across towards Simi Valley area (I had a ride worked out that took me to the “Simi Ride”) and then work your way down via Topanga Canyon. As I recall the ride home was back down to Santa Monica and home via West Hollywood – I forget the details, but I do know that the ride home avoided hills as much as possible!
On of my most vivid memories of those rides is riding past cars, full of people in Ski Clothes, while I was wearing little more than knee warmers and arm warmers, often rolled down, and putting off huge clouds of steam into the cold air. Many strange looks; “Crazy cyclists !”
Of course the ride back down required that your pockets were stuffed with a few layers of clothing, and I can tell you that stuffing your jersey front with paper works, and that Newcomb’s Ranch is a good spot to get aforementioned paper ;-)
Ahh my “good old cycling days”. Not that there is anything wrong with the four hours I spent in the Pittsburgh rain yesterday mind you, but it does lack that sense of “epicness” :-)

Could run from Orange County, thru Las Vegas to South Park.
And have a Mr. Hanky jersey.
Yes.
I’ve always thought that was possible. But there would be some long, hot, flat dusty stages. South Dakota in August. Serious headwind (or tailwind if going the other way)
I just don't think the American-psyche works that way (and Americans would be the primary audience of cette race)
We think in States and regions. A Tour of America wouldn’t register properly. Too long and too diffuse.
Not to mention too expensive and long.
I would love to see some other stage races form. I am still championing my imaginary race DC-Pittsburgh.
"Oh man, it’s going to take days to kill all these people!"
that's a nice one.
A tour of New England or Pacific Northwest would work nicely. I’m sure you’re right about a cross country route—probably good for a one time spectacle but hard to sustain.
No one is remembering that wonderful proposal of a few years ago to actually do such a thing?
I knew it was a joke as soon as I saw a stage routed through Abilene.
Holy crap! I remember that.
Hard to believe it was 3 years ago now. Where does the time go?

I'm honestly a little dissapointed by all the entitled outrage coming from some of you...
…like it’s your God given right to have a bike race.
Guess what. If the riders don’t want to ride the bike race, for whatever reason, you don’t get a bike race. If you don’t like it, tough goddamn shit.
Perhaps some day it’ll dawn on you to actually appreciate what these guys do, rather than whine when you don’t get your daily entertainment.
Bullshit
People around the world do far worse shit that they don’t want to do for far less money every day. Day in, day out for their entire lives.
Sure. Maybe canceling the stage was the right call.
But there’s far worse working situations than a professional cyclist making tens of thousands of $ a year riding in the snow. I’ve seen entire families living on $1 a day in my short life.
If the roads were truly dangerous, the stage should have been cancelled. But wanting the stage to be run in all situations except that doesn’t mean I have entitled outrage.
