Brilliant!
After your great post last week I could not think of a better way to start this thread.
So as our resident expert on all things Mt Baldy, how do you see those final few miles unfolding?
Vaughters seems convinced that there’s fireworks coming – from cyclingnews
"I think it is the hardest day in the race for sure and it is the hardest climb in the race," Vaughters said. "It will be more decisive than Sierra Road, without a doubt. It will be very, very difficult. I actually think it might be a little bit of a larger group than everyone is assuming, by that I mean five guys, up until two or three kilometres to go and then it is going to split and in the last two kilometres there will be very, very big gaps. I think people will be amazed at how much time will be gained and lost."

I have to agree with Jens
Which means the Rapture is real
Jens! Voigt puts the 'laughter' in 'manslaughter'
Sounds good to me
I didn’t see the last 7 km or so, but they come at 37 km into a 43 km climb, so the hangers-on should be as soft as a nice taleggio by then. Most of that is not super steep, but it’s still a long, long, long climb.

Danielson for the stage win?
End of days and all….
Actually I think that this stage could suit him well, very well…
"Age and treachery will overcome youth and skill" - Fausto Coppi
it's going to be hard as hell.
I’ve gone up to the ski lifts on baldy several times, and did L’etape like Jimbo. But I’m amazed of course at how a pro takes it versus a Fred like me. I think it’ll break the spirit of more than a few non-pure climber types
I don’t know if Schlek can / will push for something today. I’d think he could.
yes

don't worry
i’m sure they’ll break in with 10k to go.

why would they do that?
look, if it's hurting me, the other one is going to be about to die now - Jens!
For real
One day I can sit in front of a tv and nothin. Lame
So how do you expect this to play out for Rory Sutherland?
He is hanging onto a podium spot with 3 Garvelos, Tejay, and Gerdemann trailing by less than a minute. Does his (presumably) weaker team hurt him before Baldy? Or is it just a matter of whether he has the climbing legs toward the end?
by Chester Copperpot on May 21, 2011 4:25 PM EDT reply actions
I think he just stays with the lead group and follow the wheels
He know who he needs to go with and should be able to follow and conserve energy.
Focus on easy first. If that's all you get, that ain't half bad - Caballo Blanco
It looks like the break has a ton of firepower
I would assume that as soon as this break is brought back, Garmin and a couple of other teams are gonna attack like crazy. Should be a good stage as soon as we get live video.
Focus on easy first. If that's all you get, that ain't half bad - Caballo Blanco
Any indication of which team is on the front of the chase group?
by Chester Copperpot on May 21, 2011 4:28 PM EDT reply actions
The only team that makes sense is RS
But since there is no video right now, we can only speculate.
Focus on easy first. If that's all you get, that ain't half bad - Caballo Blanco
RS makes the most sense
I wonder if RS can get any help from United Health Care
by Chester Copperpot on May 21, 2011 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions
probably not. RS has lots to loose if the break gets further away. UHC should
stay cool and wait for some of the RS guys to drop off on the last climb imo.
Did anyone see the crowds at the Giro this morning...
boo Contador as he approached the finish? Just a hypothetical: if Andy Schleck was wearing yellow at AToC, and Horner/Levi/VDV/Tejay was in 2nd, would the American crowds boo Schleck?
by Chester Copperpot on May 21, 2011 4:53 PM EDT reply actions
No, the tifosi are far more passionate about the Giro, plus it's a far bigger race
and Italians like to be dramatic…
You can't spell epic without Giro
The AToC has come along way in 6 years
but we still clearly have a long way to go. Or we could just hold a race in Philadelphia. They’ll boo the American riders, too.

is Baldy
as obvious a cyclotourist destination as Galibier / Tourmalet etc.
or lots of choices there?
moo
it's definitely one of the best climbs in southern california, and maybe all of California
it’s long, some great ridges with some fast hills, and the top is killer (for me)
In the Los Angeles area, I imagine it is a top climb
But I doubt many people travel there to ride it.

well, there's none of the history of Galibier/Tourmalet
and honestly, the Alps are breathtaking — the San Gabriel mtn range is nice, but not the alps. mayabe more like the pyrenees. But there’s good riding around along Angeles Crest and some big loops up at 2000 and 3000 meter elevation.
But at the end of the day you can still squeeze in a surf session at Sunset cliffs or Topanga beach!

Busche went from Cat 2 to RadioShack within a year
"Oh man, it’s going to take days to kill all these people!"
And he only started riding a few years ago
He was a cross country runner in college
"Oh man, it’s going to take days to kill all these people!"
He was actually with Kelly Benefit strategies before Radioshack
Not sure how long he was there for though
earned his keep today

I guess Garmin should just buy Busche
and make him the team leader.
by Chester Copperpot on May 21, 2011 6:22 PM EDT reply actions
Why? They already have 8 or 9 leaders at every race.

But at least you have guys still racing hard for podium spots
and I’m not blaming the Tour, it’s too bad no other teams care enough, I like this route this year
You can't spell epic without Giro
So
Levi the stage, Horner the overall. Total dominance.

Good lord P&P are insufferable.
30 seconds was literally all I could take before the mute button.
Hm
memories of 1986. Can’t Levi try and attack? You know, just to teach Horner the ropes?

We need some updates of whats going on in the battle for 3rd!
Until Horner/Levi hit the finish, its the only thing in question now

So both the Giro and the ToC
Dominated by one rider
"Oh man, it’s going to take days to kill all these people!"
oh great
This is why I don’t do a ton of masters.

Nice that that Levi...
..won a stage in what could be the very last Grand Tour de Levi.
Doping issues aside, this is him in full shape. He can’t even beat a barely fit Schlecklet.
Wait, huh?
Anyway, it doesn’t matter. What I wanted to say was, doesn’t Ten Dam look like Henry Fonda in “Once Upon a Time in the West”?
