Giro Finale: Millar wins ITT; No Major Changes as Contador Takes Sixth Grand Tour Victory

David Millar made good on his threat to notch a stage win, and nothing else of consequence changed today as Alberto Contador rode home to victory in the 2011 Giro d'Italia.

So, is 6 minutes at this Giro an ass kicking - especially since it looks like he could have taken more time?
(and more wins too)
Yes...I agree. I don't like Sky's either.

Poor Igor
I was counting on him and Machado but Kreuz bailed me out. Still lost about 30 places today but still up on the month…

1550 VDS points most Grand Tour points since at least 2000
And probably the most since Hinault though I have to check it. More than Indurian in any of Big Mig’s wins. Contador is the best Grand Tour rider since Hinault.

Vuelta 1995?
Or whichever Vuelta it was when Jalabert won all three jerseys and oodles of stages … I bet that was a very high VDS score!

Heh, JV tweeted an eddendum to his "our team won all but 1 TTs we raced" post earlier
excluding prologues, uphill TTs and TTTs.
I’m quite disappointed he didn’t just RT it as “we won all the TTs we raced that we decided count”!

Contador has lost all but one of the GT's that he's races this year
Well at least I have 1995, 2000, and 2003. Those were fun.

pretty certain Sparta won TC
with Berts 3rd place in the TT doing the business so early congrats to him seeing as i’ve gotta toddle off and play footy now. Great Giro folks, i’ve enjoyed reading the live threads and banter that goes on, i’ve kinda lurked without posting much i must admit.

I think so to
allthough you didn’t have Contador so you’re probs the real winner
47 seconds the final gap ish

That's no fun
European anthems are supposed to be overly nationalistic!
You can't spell epic without Giro
Heh, in a few parts of Spain, that would spark a "what do you mean by nationalistic?' argument!

ITT win for Millar.
I am a little gutted for Rasmussen who punctured just before the last part of the tricky road before the line. It would have been very close between Millar and Rasmussen without the puncture. Nevertheless happy to see the big boy erasing his donut.
Amazing also to have two riders over 2000 points this early in the season.
Last year in comparison where we had four riders hit the 2000 point mark for the season:
-J-Rod and Farrar who finished with 2000 points on the year reached that mark on the last day of the Vuelta, September 19.
- Nibali who had the season best total of 2221 only crossed 2000 points on the last day, at Lombardia with 225 points.
-Gilbert who finished with 2145, also crossed the 2000 point barrier at Lombardia with 350 points there.
-J-Rod reached exactly 2000 points on the last day of the Vuelta, September 21.
Yet we have two riders already at 2000+. So do Gilbert or Contador have a chance at 3000?
- Gilbert has to step it up but it is do-able. Last year he scored 450 after the Tour of Belgium, including 350 at Lombardia and winning Piemonte also. 450 this year would just get him to 2470. Where could he get more points? Depends on where he races and you got to figure that he needs to recharge at some point for a month.
-Contador of course has his lawyer love fest to attend which may or may not remove his points. But if he survives that then he could make 3000 by the end of the Tour. He’s 766 points shy of 3000 and so a non-dominant win at the Tour will get him right at 3000. He scored 800 points in his first Giro win where he did not win a stage and 810 points for his Tour win last year so use those as a yardstick for a non-dominant win.)
didn't the point totals increase this year, or am I totally out of touch?
by JustJoshinYa on May 29, 2011 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions
oh, and as for Gilbert above, he did say he's targeting to take yellow (and assume a stage or two) at the Tour...
so, he’s targeting production there…
by JustJoshinYa on May 29, 2011 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions
If his Tour ambitions don't stop him from doing the Vuelta as well that that's helpful.
If he doesn’t do the Vuelta then any Tour success will at the most duplicate his Vuelta success last year. So he would still need to get more results than he did last year to have a chance at 3000.
Example: Say he does the Tour but no Vuelta where he had the leaders jersey last year and got 330 points. Lets say he equals that 330 points. That would still leave him 650 points shy of 3000. He could do that by:
-350 at Lombardia again plus winning the Worlds RR (350) OR Paris-Tours (250) + his National RR (100) OR Piemonte (150) + Emilia (250) + national RR (100) + …something else.
I find it possibly but unlikely that he wins the Worlds. I also doubt that he can do two Grand Tours and get to 3000 because of the racing load. Most likely to me is Lombardia (350) + Paris-Tours OR Emilia (250) + Nat RR (100) + Tour points (he would need 280 points at the Tour). Sill at this point I say his chances are less than 50%. We’ll know a lot more if he has a realistic shot after the Tour.
JJY-Points did increase this year but...
Mainly in some of the minor races. Some races were added as Cat 6’s and some races were increased to Cat 5. At any rate those races don’t mean all that much (if any) to Gilbert’s or Contador’s point totals.
Ted-Yeah 2 VDS teams over 8000 is remarkable
And look at their lineups and they should go far:
New #1 Cyclopath has guys like Cadel, F Schleck, and Anton to score still not to mention Leipheimer, Van Garderen, Taaramae, Kreuziger etc.
- Cult of Foamy has Samu, Gilbert, Kloden, Gesink, Anton, etc. Very nice.
And several of the next teams also look like they have loads of points just waiting for them.
Would it kill ya to get that Norwegian kid to do something?
When you are on your 2 month vacation in Bergen of course.
Where could he get more points? Depends on where he races and you got to figure that he needs to recharge at some point for a month.
Tour de freakin’ France. He wants yellow.
I like tinkering with the boys.
- majope
Could he target San Sebastian?
If he comes out of the tour in great “climbing” form why not go to spain and try and take a win?
Not a huge amount of points in that though
since we are talking about a stage or possibly two and one or two days in yellow.
you know how smiley faces work, right?
