Tour de France: Restday Open thread
Time for all of us to draw our collective breaths and let the heartrate drop a little after what has been the best and worst first week of a Grand Tour in a long time.
Here is a place to discuss the rest-day shenanigans and bits of info that trickle out from the hotels, pressconferences and massagetables as the riders prepare for Act II.

to decide today if he will ride further. After undergoing x-rays in a hospital in the evening, he was reassured he had not broken anything, suffering only hematoma and severe muscle tenseness on his back.
look, if it's hurting me, the other one is going to be about to die now - Jens!
Contador

It's actually directly from Contador's Twitter:
Contador:
knee is not good. I come back for ice and we ll see. I hope…strong for rest of tour.

I think he will be fine (in relative terms with the crashes and Giro fatigue).
Result of these types of teets and “rumours” will be a crowded press meeting at Saxo today at 16.00.
Who knows? We'll see in an hour's time..

I’m sure his knee hurts. I’m pretty sure he will try his best.
But he now has an excuse to lose.
Which is the point for Conta I think now.
He’s not at his best, imo.

According to one of the commentors on Danish TV the other day.
Bertie always prefer to sleep most of the rest day and skip the whole training.
"It's the greatest job in the world until Peyton comes off the field and you think his thumb might be broken and there's three minutes left in the AFC Championship Game and you're down by three to New England and you haven't taken a snap all year. All I have to say
is I hate the fact that Hoogie was taken out like this. Losing a possibility to win the stage is something that probably sucks most to him.
I think we, the ´neutral´ cyclingfans, lose a lot more. Hoogie would’ve given this tour a lot of great stages, trying to defend his dots. I hope some riders will be able to fill the gap and fight out those otherwise pretty ‘boring’ first 150km of the stage
I was not a fan before, but I admired his grit, grace and his passion on Stage 9. He has a new fan.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
He's got a looot of passion
He’d have gone at least 4 more times in the break this tour. There aren’t many riders who can do it. it’s a big loss.
I’ve never been a huge Vino-fan, but his loss also is a big loss for the race. These riders really give us some unpredictable and exciting racing. it’s a shame they’re out
voeckler in yellow might be fun, by the way. back to the armstrong-age
Let nothing take us back to the Armstrong Age...but yes, Tommy V. will honour the jersey,
and I will certainly miss Vino in the race.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
I have a feeling Andy Schleck is about ready to take us back to the Armstrong age
The leopard train will rival disco’s putting everyone on the rivet halfway up the last mountain, and Andy will finish it off. If he wins this race, I fear an even greater focus by riders on only trying to win one stage race a year. Plus, it will be eons before anyone tries the Giro-Tour double or even rides the Giro if they want to place well in the Tour.
An Andy win is bad for cycling in my opinion. The well-oiled machine, the singular team goal is all impressive, but it makes for dreadfully boring and predictable racing.
I picked Riccardo Ricco for my 2011 VDS team, and submitted said team well before the submission deadline. I fully understand the error of my ways, and plead with the VDS Gods to allow me to resubmit my team.
As much as I am a fan of Stuey, my heart is with Cadel. That said, George is driving a disco train,
as is Stuey. Captains on the road and they know it works. I’m glad though that Evans is still very much a one off…and along with many others, I’ll be praising George and all of the BMC team if he wins.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
It seems as if the focus on either Tour or Giro + Vuelta is happening anyway.
I’m not convinced an Andy win, or a Bert win, or a Cadel win, or an Ivan Basso win would make a difference on that score.
well a bert win
might do just the opposite – obviously the giro-tour double, plus the other races that he races to win in the spring. A Cadel win might be neutral. I think the point is that andy rides very exclusively for the tour so a win by him would reinforce the tendency that you mention.
+1
Would prefer Evans winning as he also enters other races to win, i.e. TA, TdR etc. A Schleck is a one race rider. Not good for cycling imo.
I think so as well but he does have some fans here
I think I was more of a fan a few years back. Maybe it was my imagination but he seemed to actually race to win back then.
Focus on easy first. If that's all you get, that ain't half bad - Caballo Blanco
+100
I want a cyclist and not a Tour de Francist to win the Tour. Nothing against him as a person but I’m sick of seasons like his from top riders.

I'm not sure we know how Andy will ride in the future.
He has finished 2nd in the last two years – it seems unsurprising to me that his focus would be right on the TdF this year. IF he wins (and let’s not make that out to be anything guaranteed) this year, I think time will tell what goals he and and his management set. He is, after all, still a fairly young rider.
by KnittingGene on Jul 11, 2011 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions
He has never looked to do anything after the Tour either
of course we’ll not know until it happens but he doesn’t seem like someone who will suddenly become a more active rider. And as many have pointed out, he has never won a stage race, looking to win one may help his cause.
True. TDF win could
remove a monkey from his back
or at least swap the monkey for something more desirable. Like a pony.
SO Hoogerland has dropped out?
I’ve missed the report.
If Peyton Manning crashed onto a barbed-wire fence and returned to a game, you’d never hear the end of it for the rest of your life.
I wondered about that too...I think it's just the way Reeep has expressed himself?

Geraint Thomas
Very impressed by this guy.
Here‘s a link to some videos he’s made during the tour.
Could Thomas make a bid for white?
I know Gesink is favourite, but he’s been suffering for a few days. I know Taaramae can climb too, but Thomas has looked very strong so far. I don’t really know how he goes in the mountains though – will they be too much for him? Will be be working for someone like Uran now Wiggo has gone?
He was over 2 hrs down on Contador in last years tour by the end
He’s very much a cobbled classics rider rather than a climber so unless he’s gone through massive changes then a bid for white is really out of the question.
by randomgerbil on Jul 11, 2011 7:37 AM EDT up reply actions
I think he's much more than a cobbled classics rider. He has demonstrated that already this Tour.
But I agree that the high mountains are not his thing.
"Oh man, it’s going to take days to kill all these people!"
think he might surpise a few people
Not his thing, but his form is good so may bring a good showing in the mountains.
No.
Even though Gesink is likely to be exhausted in the final Tour week, he should easily outclimb Thomas on the big cols.

For me it’s Katusha, they should have been a lot more active in this race than they have been.

Katusha has been very poor. Irrelevant so far. In fact with Brutt Force out of the race, the chances of them doing anything is even smaller now.
The only real chance left for Katusha is if Galymzianov stills some sprint win.

Katusha didn't do a lot
Neither did Lampre, and Saur… I understand Saur is the smallest team, but I expected to see them in more breakaways in the first week.
Yes to Saur being too passive. What are the waiting for?
Coppel to suddenly take yellow?
Yeah, not very impressed with them thus far
Don’t seem to be making much of an effort. NetAPP showed themselves more in their big races so far. Not good for a French team in the biggest race in the world on home soil.

well, saur rider did win most agressive in stg 7 iirc
"Wizard's first rule. People are stupid. They will believe anything they want to be true or fear to be true." -- Terry Goodkind
Saur needs to justify being there and not justify the belief they shouldn't be
alas they shouldn’t be there it seems
I didn't know they were in the race
I at least knew Katusha was there, they tried to get Galimzyanov to the line a couple times.
"It's a lovely thing, feeling that momentum. If you're lucky, it's also about grace." Tim Winton
Saur are sucking
They’re only there cos they’re French, and they ought to be going in the breaks in the same madcap way Vacansoleil are. Remember Vacan are without their 2 GC riders they originally signed, they’re without the French climber they had last year (Brice Feillu), yet they’re still firing people into the breaks, challenging in sprints, holding the maillot á pois.
Saur however have done virtually nothing. Am I enjoying watching them rather than Valls Ferri, Carlos Sastre, Fabio Felline, Fabio Duarte and David De La Fuente? No. I am still finding them more interesting than Menchov. I think given the crashed we’ve had in this Tour, it’s a blessing to us all that Menchov is not taking part.
Saur is there because Jerome Coppel is French
And the GC standings haven’t really started to sort out yet.
"Oh man, it’s going to take days to kill all these people!"
BUT last year
Vacan + Sprinty Leafy + Climby Leafy = no Tour
They left out the most entertaining team in the peloton, and 2 of France’s young hopes.
I think Coppel isn’t even going to be top frenchman. In fact he might not get French podium if Jeannesson climbs ok.
The playing field for invitations was way different last year
ASO didn’t give a wildcard invite to ANY French team. ASO had 6 wildcard invitations. 4 went to ProTour teams (Sky, RS, Garmin and Katusha). 1 to BMC and 1 to Cervelo.
"Oh man, it’s going to take days to kill all these people!"
Hey, I was agreeing with you.
That’s the ASO’s criteria, not mine.
"Oh man, it’s going to take days to kill all these people!"
Meh
They have some responsibility to French cycling. The Tour doesn’t completely belong to the world. Is it cool? Not really, but I def understand.

Like, take Cofidis and FdJ and Europcar. But Saur? That’s a whole other level.
No but it needs to be more global and less regional because it is THE global cycling event
as tgs points out they already have three French WCs, one int. WC was not going to kill them.
Both have Int. WCs this year
nor are they on the level of the Tour and their domestique teams are actually pretty strong.

So, what is everyone doing for the rest day to unwind from the last week of racing?
Me? I’m going on a 2 hour trail run today after work.

Contemporary stuff or old Django style swing?

hm, every night it's something different (obviously), have to look
actually the Nice jazz festival is as much pop as anything else – more of a music festival than jazz – though we saw some brilliant jazz last night by a guy named Michel Portal – wow! There’s another stage, but looks like tonight i’ll be seeing Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue and then Avishai Cohen (hopefully jazz and not the yiddish folk music thing he’s been into lately). Tomorrow night is keziah jones and then maceo parker on one stage and then Roy hargrove, ahmad jamal and wynton marsalis on the other.
Troy!
Love Shorty—have seen him play several times in New Orleans, both at Jazz Fest and Tipitina’s. He’s such a talented kid…have loved watching him on ‘Treme’ as well. Enjoy!
Seriously, that show just celebrates music so well.

Yeah, it developed really nicely.
I actually think it was better than the first one in a lot of ways.

just a love letter to music, especially the local musicians. really well done also in terms of depicting the city post-Katrina.
a favorite clip with Troy and Wynton Marsalis:
Thanks for the clip

de nada...
I’m a wee bit fangirlish about him. he was the youngest musician to get his own Jazz Fest poster, which was a big honor. just a really talented kid (only 23, I think) from one of those storied multi-generational New Orleans musical families. he’s actually from the Treme neighborhood too.
yeah, saw him a couple years ago
at nice jazz festival – back when it had one of the stages in an old roman amphitheatre – twilight and just after and fantastic moon in the sky behind the stage – and fantastic concert – magical. Last night he started off slow but then hit stride and in the end just brought the house down – came out for like 5 or 6 encores – you could see just how hyped and excited he was. Besides himself, the pianist and drummer are just exceptional.
And Trombone Shorty, or Troy i guess from above – fantastic! What a blast!! What a night!

thursday: he and bunny drive down from NoVa

saturday: more laundry
sunday: he and bunny return to NoVa (unless one of the puppies has to go back in for surgery)

Seriously though, I actually have more space here in the NE then I did when I lived in Colorado…ironic…
Some areas, are def more urban (Boston area), but there is a lot of space in the NE to get lost too. It’s beautiful here and the closeness means you can do the beach in the morning and mountains in the afternoon…very cool…

The "quiet corner" is what they call NE CT (and I believe it's a double meaning)...
Don’t get me wrong, it is nice up there…but it is somewhat ‘rural’ to put it nicely.
We did the Ragnar 24 hour running race through that section last year and the night-time legs were a little scary. Lot’s of bonfires dotting the countryside…almost felt like a lot of eyes were on you through the woods…sort of creepy all night long.

Today’s the sink or swim day for HTC re: 2012 sponsor.

Presume Tony Martin's gonna leave them regardless
If he wants to take GCing seriously, and it looks like he does, he needs to not be in a train. Same with Velits (who took turns in the train whilst on the Vuelta podium).
Whether the sponsor stays, Tony needs to leave. Katusha would probably pay big money for him too, as we’re seeing right now that they’re a 1-man GT team and he can’t ride all 3.
If I'm Garmin, I make a huge play for Tony Martin
Chances are, they lose Thor and Barbie Barbie at the end of the year, so they should have cash. he fits perfectly in their model of strong TTists who can climb a little.

Tony Martin is one of the best cyclists out there. But he’s not going to win a grand tour anytime soon.
Garmin needs a ringer. Not someone who can climb a little. They’ve had plenty of top 5 and top 10 performances.
Garmin seems focused on developing one instead of purchasing one on the open market.
"Oh man, it’s going to take days to kill all these people!"
Tony Martin can win a GT just like Menchov and Ullrich could
give him one with lots of ITT kms and he can do it, he needs some more strength on the climbs but he has improved leaps and bounds over the last several years.
But harder climbs and less ITT miles are what's en vogue with grand tour organizers right now
And when Menchov won, say the 2009 Giro, he was in the top 3 on the mountain stages. Martin needs to show that he can only lose 30 seconds to Contador and Schleck on a savage mountain stage before defend-in-mountains-and-win-on-the-ITT play can work.
"Oh man, it’s going to take days to kill all these people!"
I see it as a cycle
the Giro will always be tough climbs(2009 was an anomaly) but the Tour and Vuelta will ease it up, plus I don’t think this year’s Tour or Vuelta routes are that unusual. Eventually another long TT will be put in place.
