What's the top 5 going to be in Paris?

Useless post. Because we just had one mountainstage and now I'm going to ask you to predict the top 5 GC of the Tour. But I like to jump to conclusions so here is mine top 5

1 Andy Schleck Because he is still number one on the mountains

2 Cadel Evans He is sooo not a winner

3 Samsan We love orange. And he TT his place on the podium

4 Fränk Schleck Because he TT like a clown

5 Alberto Contador Where is he going to make time up?

6 Ivan Basso Because Jens, our Swedsh guy, said his first mountain stage was his best one

7 Thomas Voeckler Who else?! Noo probably not.. Out of the yello he will lose an half our to win an other stage again.

What do you think?

I pretty much agree with you across the board

except for Voeckler in 7th, I have a feeling he’ll ride himself into the ground to keep the lead and will eventually explode big time.

You've been so hard on Evans

I’m surprised you give him 2nd again. Shows your comments are more about fun than losing objectivity, good man.

I will be surprised if Basso doesn’t podium. But of course, they can’t all podium.

Cadel
Andy
Basso
Frank
SamSan

I mostly agree, but...

I think Andy is going to find a way to spit the dummy. I’ll go with
Cadel
Basso
Andy

SamSan

It's all about the chances.

Evans got all the chances to win a GT.. Andy hasn’t got them yet. He’s young. More acceleration. So that will give him the edge in this Tour.. (It’s all about putting my statements in the good perspective)

by Frinking on Jul 14, 2011 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

That, historically spoken,

Evans is more of a non GT winner than Andy Schleck

by Frinking on Jul 14, 2011 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Factually speaking

neither are GT winners at this time, Cadel at least has won stage races in his career. Now if you want to say Andy is better that may very well be true but a better winner? That is currently false

by Phil H. on Jul 14, 2011 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Technically that is not what I said..

But you twisted me other wise, or let me say things I didn’t what to say. Lame excuse.
Historically spoken. Evans had chances to win a GT. Didn’t take them. I think never will. Best contender around? Andy.

Andy dreams of a ride like Cadel had in the World Championships ……

I have no clue the top 5 but it’s exciting that we have no consensus so far into the race.

Cadel will tought to drop, but I agree with ant1: too soon to count Contador out.
Can Cunego climb like he did in TdS?

Cadel
Contador
Basso
Schleck

Per GTs ridden they're the same.

Evans is better at stage races and wins more in general.

i'm not ready to discount AC yet

1. contador
2. aschleck
3. evans
4. fschleck
5. basso

it won't be easy

but i think it’s doable. i’m very unsure about his form. the knee issue is hard to judge, and who knows what racing a giro does to one of the best stage racers in a long time. the knee could remain a problem and giro fatigue might set in or the knee could be back at 100% and the giro fatigue never really materialize. either way, it’ll be fun to watch.

there is certainly a better course this year for a climber to take time. lots of very tough stages to come

I'm already on record jumping to conclusions in another thread

(OK many threads) but that time I only did the podium so lets see:
1. Cadel (oi,oi,oi) Evans
2. Ivan (just the aperitif) Basso (He is so not done yet!)
3. Andy (to win, you actually have to go win it) Schleck
4. Damiano (I’m in a GC!) Cunego
5. Peter (shouldn’t you be in a white jersey) Velits
6. Frank (I’m not a better climber than Andy) Schleck
7. Samuel (I dont regret one bit burning all my orange matches) Sanchez

There you go, I have sorted most of the top ten for you. I say Contador doesn’t make it to Paris. Once he realises he is off the podium, he abandons with an injury which is mostly psychological.

by platypus on Jul 14, 2011 8:49 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, I can't quite see Contador hanging if he's beaten.

But the guy has surprised me again and again, so one more surprise would be no surprise. Cause remember, as LA said, “You can’t disintegrate him.”

Tour de France is the biggest race, should have a bigger podium.

                                     Cadel
                                          1 Frank
                    Alberto 2
                            3 Ivan
    Andy 4
       5

Super dope. Is that like EPO on steroids?

That didn't work right.supposed to be...

Cadel, Frank, Alberto, Ivan and Andy 1-5 spread out on a podium.

Fränk Schleck

Everyone says his TT is rubbish: it is poor, but it’s not as bad as some people say.

In 2008, he finished 5’38" down on Schumacher, and 3’33" down on Evans. But my distinct recollection is that he was used as a rabbit for Sastre, and fell back early, only to keep pretty good pace in front of Sastre for much of the TT. I don’t think it’s a legitimate reflection of his TT as a bare number.

In 2009, Fränk was certainly trying for the podium. He was 2’34" down on Contador’s winning time, and 1’20" behind Evans. Andy was in 1’44", only 30 seconds down on Evans.

Last year, he was a no-show at the Tour. His Vuelta TT, however, was pants, 3’44" down on Velits and over 3’ to Cancellara.

It would be a mistake to count Fränk out on the back of his TT, in my view. Someone like Evans or Contador would want to be within 1’30" to be comfortable. Anything more than 2’30" would have Fränk Schleck in the box seat.

Maybe I have seen too many movies

but I fully expect to see Frank’s bike explode in a fiery crash during the final TT. Granted it may not be entirely his fault, but rather a problem retrofitting the Specialized bike motor that Cance used last year into Frank’s current Trek model.

great comment, solid points

I'm feverished, or the way you want to spell it

by plinytheelder on Jul 15, 2011 8:53 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm guessing the final TT won't have a huge effect... Therefore:

Andy
AC
Basso
Frank
Cadel
Samu

But what I’m actually hoping for is…

Cadel
Samu
Basso
Frank
Andy
AC

Cadel won't concede much time to Andy over the mountains

Andy Schleck
Fat Schleck. The Schlecks are in solid position, but it’s going to take more than one brother gaining 20 seconds per mountain finish.
Contador is a big question mark. He could win or he could DNF. He’s the only guy that showed nothing in stage 12, that has also shown that he can do anything in the rest of his GT career.
Basso. He’s got 55 seconds on…
SamSan, who is in sketchy position ATM so I have a hard seeing him overtaking the others.

Before the mountains, I put the over/under at Contador gaining 30 seconds on Evans and then 90 seconds on Andy. So I’m looking to see of Andy can put 1:11 into Evans over the next three stages, or of Frank can gain, I sunno, probably another 60 or 90 seconds?

It’w wide open. At least 4 guys have a legit shot. Basso would be tough—I can’t see him doing anything better than Evans for the duration of the Tour. He can’t TT and he won’t drop Evans. Except he still could. But other than the fact that he could, he can’t. Um…yeah.

SamSan would have to gain over 2 minutes to catch Evans, and then still lose time in the TT.

But really, who knows?

Well at least I have 1995, 2000, and 2003. Those were fun.

No respect for Tommy D?

I am so sad.
1. Cadel – he just can’t have another ho-hum TT and have this years montain goat do their best ever
2. F. Schleck – who loses yellow in the TT as he cannot recreate the effort that won the Tour de Suisse
3. Tommy D. – a guy who I don’t see losing a ton in the mountains and he can out TT the beejebus out of SamSan, Cunego, Basso.

I see Contador as having legitimate knee problems.
I think Any will come clean with some physical problem that has made him pretty bad/unresilient all year long
The new Basso cannot TT
Cunego always has a bad day – mebbe tomorrow?

no answers, only more questions

Who is Arnold Jeannesson?

How time can Contador make up and still miss the podium?

Dude, I can see my house from here

by shades on Jul 16, 2011 4:44 AM EDT reply actions

The first one is a superb question fo Vlaanderen 90. He can tell you in whiich team, whith whoich DS and in wich race he was impressive

Your second question.. All depends on his form. Contador is not a superb TT’er.. It is getting worse when he’s not in form.. So there’s still a huge unknown factor in the TT.. And there is the question where he can make up time? On whom.. So there are waaaaay to many variables, really??, to answer your question
