First Cyclocross of the season - Nittany Lion Cross..... LIVE!!
Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th September 2011
13:15/14:30 USA eastern; 18:15/19:30 UK & 19:15/20:30 CEST
Doesn't time fly? It's already the first cyclocross of the season - the Nittany Lion Cross, in Philadelphia.
It's a two-day festival of cyclocross, with races for the elite women and men today and tomorrow - women at 13:15 Eastern USA (aka 18:15 UK, 19:15 CEST) & men's at 14:30 USA Eastern (19:30 UK, 20:30 CEST) - and there'll be live coverage of all the races online.
Here's the course - the excellent website says:
This course is mostly eastern grass; the start is on a paved section which turns into gravel. This first turn is a sweeping turn to the right. The barriers, one set, are about 3/4 kilometer from the start. The course is undulating. There is one section that crosses over some tree roots that is less than 50 yards in length.
More below! Including the European invasion.... how will they fare in the US of A?
This will be an interesting one - since the UCI changed the rules, the early-season USA races give lots of UCI points, which are very important, as they are used to decide starting positions in the rest of the UCI races - very important for the riders who will be contesting the Cross World Cups. This has meant certain European riders have been hopping across the Atlantic to try to get as big an advantage as possible, especially while rivals are still on the road/MTB! The women's startlist includes Gabby Day and Helen Wyman from the UK and Joyce Vanderbecken from Belgium, as well as a great set of American riders, and the men's has Tom Bosch from the Netherlands and Ian Field from the UK.
My confession - although I follow European CX, I know pretty much nothing about the USA scene. Many apologies for being useless! I know of Adam Myerson through his twitter - but I'd love to know more - please please add anything you know to the comments, I appreciate it!
(You may remember Gabby Day, Helen Wyman and Ian Field from their interviews right here on Podium Café - and Helen from her fantastic crayon art! - here's Gabby, Ian, Helen before & after her win at the iconic Koppenbergcross, and Helen's awesome crayon art!)
It looks like a fantastic set of races - and another reason to love it is it's equal prize $ for men & women, which does NOT happen in the Euro races! yay Nittany!

Oh, I didn't see him on the startlist - yeah, agree!

Whoo Hoo.
I know folks in this. Sweet to be able to watch since it’s too far away from the city to actually get there.
Exciting, isn't it!
about 10 mins til the women kick off!
Who should we be cheering for?

Bless them, it seems like every time the riders pass, someone walks in front of the camera!
Not complaining, it’s great to see something, but it does make me giggle!
This is about 45 minutes from my house...
Never saw cross before… I am sure i will get in to it before the season is over… and I am sure I will regret not going there today….

There are a couple of really awesome ones to watch, this season
If you want to get an idea of cx in all it’s craziness, then Koksijdecross and Koppenbergcross are two fantastic races!

You can get some ideas of some of the crazier races
In tgsgirl’s calendar of Euro CX – the dates are all last year’s but the descriptions stay the same!
and Cyclocross even has a pop song… De Cross Gaat Door, it’s very Euro!

No problems!
And once the season gets going, we should run some livethreads, with people happy to answer any stupid questions (I should know, I’m usually the one asking them!) – but Cross is pretty simple, relative to road – an hour-long race, round a fixed circuit, with all kinds of obstacles of cycle/run over/round – and when the weather’s bad (mud! snow! ice!) it just makes things more fun!

Believe me when I say I take podium positions when it comes
to stupid questions… and all kind of questions. But I think I am putting a smile in someones face across the globe… And across the table whem my wife listens to me..!

Let me know if I can help with info on North American cross racers
Would you guys like an overview of the scene?
Sure yes, would be awesome
I know nothing on North American cross, except for the few guys that venture over to our side of the pond every year.
I am ready to hug the world - Tony Martin.
Race report, with photos
from Cyclocross Magazine (love this one of Gabby Day!) with teenytiny video of the men jumping the barriers in the first round
Helen Wyman wins Nittany 2!
All I know about the men’s is that Ian Field came 2nd – apparently he was leading, but had mechanical issues, or something
Race 2, which has $ prize but no UCI points
had exactly the same podium for the women as the first race!
In the men’s race, Ian Field was leading by 15 seconds, but had a comedy accident in the last half of the last lap – some course tape had flapped loose and tangled up with Ian, and got caught in his cassette. Tom van den Bosch (AA Drink) overtook for the win – Ian made it in 2nd

Is Las Vegas this weekend?
Telenet Fidea is there, and so is Sporza’s Renaat Schotte.
I am ready to hug the world - Tony Martin.
Crossvegas, 14th September
CX mag is doing race reporting in real time, and possibly streaming? I can’t tell! More here

This is a really interesting interview
with Stef Wyman, on Helen & Ian’s trip, why they’re in the USA, and some strong words about the CX scene in the UK, especially for women….
