Husband and trainer. Indeed, not good.

And it’s part of fallout from the Papp crap sing-like-a-bird, ever delayed wrist slap.

Joe Papp himself, well, near-death and epiphany from and about doping in 2006…attempts to come out and testify in 2007…big crusade against doping in recent years… but if the sale to Longo was spring 2007, I have to say it’s pretty gross to keep selling something that almost killed you, while in the process of your slooooow, drawn out epiphany. I’m trying to find a better light for it, because I’ve bumped into the guy from time to time, and I’d like to think well of old Coro Center fellows. About the best I can come up with is some combination of “insurance” and “undercover ops” Which is still kinda ucky, but makes sense given his “want to be CIA” goals.

Without intending to thread-jack, that whole (US domestic) mess looms larger, for me, than any one-time buy. But maybe that’s a proximity thing, and if I were in France, I’d be going black armband over the Longo story.

occasional opera, experimental stuff, or 'free fridays" more than PSO

I daydream too much for longer orchestral concerts, even very good ones (which I’m told the PSO’s, reliably, are). Plus Honeck’s big on Mahler, and I can’t stomach Mahler. Why?

In the not too distant past Papp publicly warned his past customers to get straight and/or come clean.

It was also obvious that he had kept records that the police/anti doping authorities had them in their possession. There was even that picture that turned up. Anyone who continued to use and/or run afoul of the anti drug organizations were and are begging to get sanctioned.
Lots of people don’t like Papp but he is hopefully putting a scare into people who may be considering using doping products. Without trust omerta is worthless, if you can’t trust your dealer to keep quiet and cover his tracks then you are much more likely to get caught. I like the fact that the dopers who did business with Joe aren’t safe, I’d like to think that his experience is a deterrent to people getting started in that direction. And the fact that Papp is drawing a lot of attention to himself, and drawing peoples ire is hopefully making lots of people think a lot harder about choices the they make.

Oh yeah, I think the upshot is good for cycling.

Particularly because some people probably bought from him BECAUSE they assumed he was a complete hypocrite (to still be selling the stuff even after he started talking about the risks and doing the mea culpa).

And I do understand that, no matter how bright a guy is, the full implications of a situation can take a while to sink in, and rationalizations break down harder, the better you built them up in the first place. (And who knows who all was leaning on him, at different times.)

But I can still wish the dates lined up better than they do, as far as when he could first have realized that doping can kill, when he started speaking against the stuff, and when he was selling.

"dislike" is not really the relevant metric here, anyway

It’s not like I could even hang on his wheel, nor am I going to party with the dude. But for all the good he’s done (route books, ride maps, stuff like that) I wish the most important part of the story, for anyone outside of PGH, was less…I dunno… adjectives are failing me.

And it seems so unfortunate / unnecessary.

Summa grad and Coro Center for Public Leadership are supposed to add up to something other than a “whatever it takes” attitude. I can’t say, “poor uneducated flandrian who’d otherwise be digging beets,” y’know? At the same time, I understand the irritation of seeing guys who you used to beat go off to the continent or some pro team, and turn into supercharged winners. I don’t know if it’s worse from the POV of a Domestic SSR in the early 90’s to say “well, shoot, it’s dirty, so I’ll do something else,” or to say, “if they can all do it, I can too,” regardless.

I guess I’m saying that I’m feeling very measured sympathy, and even a dash of gratitude, but also considerable distress with undertones of rising bile when I try to engage with his story.
(And black humor—The “I never realized that the CIA would refuse to consider me based on doping” is actually sort of funny, in a painful way.)

I hate Joe Papp because he is a dick head and would still be doping if he didn't get caught

He was a “pro” for about 1 season and the rest of the time, he was racing criteriums around the U.S. and then around south America, and while there were other dirty racing, stealing money from a lot of guys.

He acts way too self-righteous after the shit that he pulled so even if he does rat on some people and his information helps bring some people down

Don't trust, but verify!
Lots of people don’t like Papp

I think Joe Papp is very selfserving with his attempts to rehabilitate his public image. He comes off looking very smarmy and unlikeable. But in the end, it isn’t about whether we or anyone else like Joe Papp, it’s whether the information he provides can be verified. Financial transactions, email, etc, can all be verified independently, so the authorities should be able to confirm any of Joe Papp’s claims.

Is it wrong that I laughed a little at this?

Like, for reals? The best place you could come up with to buy was Joe Papp?! Geesh.

Well, these rumors about Longo have been going around for quite some time. It’s a bit of a surprise to see them actually come home to roost, so to speak. Better late than never.

Kinda like hiring ...

… Floyd Landis as a strength and conditioning coach.
… Tyler Hamilton as a public relations consultant.

Anyway winning the French women’s national ITT title at the age of 52, well these latest revelations should not be a surprise to learn.

Inner Ring has an interesting post

about comments from Jalabert and the president of the French fed, David Lappartient.

Oh and ...

… she has now save the French fed a little grief by withdrawing from the World Championships.

I can’t recall a time Jeannie Longo ever gave up against the authorities without a huge fight, which BTW she usually won. To me this is indicative. I think she feels if she just quietly “retire”, the French fed will just not press the issues which are starting to surface. I could be wrong but that is my gut feeling on this.

Patrice Ciprelli was training other athletes in 2007, not just Jeannie Longo.

Wasn’t he actually estranged from her for a while and more involved with one of the others? I could well be wrong, and I’m not sure of the year, but I remember reading an interview with her about how tough things were emotionally.

He supplied EPO to another athlete but not his wife?

That scenario seems very unlikely whatever the state of their relationship was at that time.
