A couple of months ago I mentioned that at our workplace we were putting together a bit of a special event for our National Ride To Work Day.
Just to refresh your memory, we're raising money for Variety - a children's charity that provides assistance to all sorts of children in need. From instruments and sporting equipment for schools to assisting sick kids, they do a lot of good around the country. But we're also raising this money because when we reach $5000 one of the most anti-cyclist guys I've worked with will ride to work on Ride To Work Day.
Peter has a dim view of cyclists; he thinks there are too many on the road and that they should be eradicated like termites.
However, what started as a jovial office discussion between colleagues, turned into a commitment from Peter to ride to work for $5,000.00.
The first question put to Peter was, "would you donate this $5K to charity?"
Being the good honest man that he is, without hesitation he said "of course", so here we are; we need to achieve charity donations to a target of $5,000.00 to see Peter swallow his pride and don the lycra.
Ride To Work Day is about two weeks away on Wednesday 12 October and we've organised quite the event to celebrate making our mate ride a bike.
We're organising a group ride to accommodate all skill and experience levels that will ride an approximate 60km loop (get-on, get-off as it suits) to support our mate as he rides the 30km to work from his place. There'll be a BBQ breakfast hosted at our work for those with time and all riders who sign up through ridetowork.tyreright.com.au and make a donation to Variety will go in the draw to win a Silverback commuter bike and a set of 4 Continental passenger tyres for their car, a total prize value of over $2000.
If you're in the Sydney area and would like to join in, there's still time to sign up. If you're not and you want to help, then please consider a donation, we've still got a way to go before we hit our $5000 target. I'll report back after the day with some photos and a recap of how it all went.
