Final VDS Result: We have a winner!
First ever winner!: Nailheads Nubile Nymphs, DS Chuck Martel
In an incredibly close finish in the end, Chuck Martel holds off mpw5 by a mere 41 points.
A huge congratulations to him and all the top finishers in this the inaugural season.
More on the results later and we will also have a post on the prizes for our top 3 finishers, Chuck Martel, mpw5 and Albertina, once the last competition, the combined VDS - WVDS is decided.

Personally
as a racer I am all about sprinting for 31st place. I therefore am outraged at having lost to CO2Cycle by a tire width. I am pretty sure he/she moved off their line.

I came within 10 p of passing majope
I suppose the gracious thing would be to say she held me off by fair means but we all know that wasn’t the case.
HA!!
Top 16!! WooHoo!!!
Best VDS Finish ever….well maybe except that first time when we only had 20 or so people….
you got me by 3 points
But i can’t be disappointed. I’m in the 500s in the VDSm, having also finished well back in the field last year. This competition has brightened a few days this year.
BTW before anyone asks
The combined result will be calculated by creating a separate men’s VDS sub-ranking of all the teams that have DSs who also competed in the women’s VDS. The DS with the lowest combined placings wins. (in the event of a tie the DS with the best placed women’s team wins)
Great
Now I have three separate dimensions of losing.

I can't believe Mr Hegemony missed out on the 30000000 winning dutch women riders
This gives me happyface.
Yeah
because drafting a boatload of Dutch riders had done so much for me in the past.

At first I thought I was copping out by picking all the HTC-Highroad riders
I didn’t know many of the riders, but I was following some of the HTC-Highroad women. So I made up my team to be all of the HTC-Highroad women, plus a few others to fill in the rest of the line-up. (Chosen mostly by they eenie-meenie method.)
HOWEVER, with the news of HTC-Highroad this year, I’m quite proud of my “Mostly HTC” team. Placing 33rd in this VDS shows how truly strong the real HTC team is.
I really hope the ladies’ sponsorship continues.
Has there been any news on that, does anyone know?
The HTC thing, that is.
"I’m hoping for the Mortirolo-Gavia combination, then we can ride down to Bormio for ice cream." Emma Pooley on the Giro Donne
Word from some different twitterati is
that it will continue on a smaller budget and it won’t be HTC or Highroad funded. Arndt and Teute are both leaving.
Oh, I hadn't heard about Teute leaving
but then again, I’ve still not seen anything other than gossip
by Sarah Connolly on Sep 28, 2011 6:02 AM EDT up reply actions
I've not seen mention of where she might be going
I’ve seen mention of it from some different people. Perhaps just based on her saying stuff like “last race for this team bla bla bla”?
Think I shall have to put this one down to experience.
& pick Marianne Vos next year.

Champagne again! I wish I did that good in other VDS.

In your position, you definitely need something stronger then Champagne!
Cause you lost the mighty battle for Lantern Rouge! :)

Holy Smokes!!! I came 5th!
I’ll be completely honest and say that I’ve only checked the standings 2 since I signed my team up, the second being tonight. But wow I guess my “pick the big names then pick all sorts of Canadians and a few random picks” worked. Cool!
Thanks for setting this up! I’ll be back next year
2nd! Wow!
I didn’t ever expect to be up there at the end of the season. Basically (shamefully) the only rider I really knew anything about when the season started was Marianne Vos. And I didn’t put her in my team.
This more than makes up for my dismal showing in the men’s VDS this year!
Big congratulations to Chuck and many thanks to everyone who was involved in organising and running the competition.
Mark
Top 57
Damn Vos. Thanks heaps and heap for running this, it was mighty fun, and I learned a thing or two (always pick Vos, ALWAYS pick Vos).
I am ready to hug the world - Tony Martin.
Damn tight race until the end. Congratulations to the podium.
My team barely made it into the best half. I feel I have learned a lot about womens racing, but perhaps competition have learned even more. I hope we will know next season.
Thanks for the game and all the race updates etc.
The ideal team ?
With the following 15 riders I get to a total of 26.235 points
Vos, Marianne 65 7297
Teutenberg, Ina 25 3144
Antoshina, Tatiana 1 1886
Bras, Martine 12 1859
Armitstead, Elizabeth 10 1685
Baccaille, Monia 8 1420
Majerus, Christine 4 1300
De Vocht, Liesbet 8 1280

Hughes, Clara 1 890
Numainville, Joelle 4 870
Hosking, Chloe 4 841
Henrion, Ludivine 2 790
Moolman, Ashleigh 2 790
Any other, better sugegstions?
Oooh, this is my favourite part - the team we all SHOULD have picked!
Next year I’m scouring the 1 pointers for any riders like Antoshina, who shouldn’t be there!
by Sarah Connolly on Sep 28, 2011 6:05 AM EDT up reply actions
I found an even better team, without Marianne Vos
Team costs: 150 points, team score: 26.449
Johansson, Emma 45 5624
Van Vleuten, Annemiek 30 3265
Teutenberg, Ina 25 3144
Antoshina, Tatiana 1 1886
Bras, Martine 12 1859
Armitstead, Elizabeth 10 1685
Baccaille, Monia 8 1420
Majerus, Christine 4 1300
Gillow, Shara 2 1220
Bubnenkova, Svetlana 1 963
Hughes, Clara 1 890
Numainville, Joelle 4 870
Hosking, Chloe 4 841
Henrion, Ludivine 2 790
Pieters, Amy 1 692
I managed 4 of those (Emma, Gillow, Hosking and Henrion)
Never in my wildest did I think Ina would outscore Pooley but then she has been getting better and better and with a Worlds medal and Pooley not quite as good as 2010 so it makes some sense.
and Pooley had her collarbone break, & also the loss of Tour de l'Aude
would hit her scoring too – GC, QoM as well as stage races (the fact the races we’ve lost lately were ones for climbers, & the ones we’ve gained tend to be flat mean next year, I’ll put in more sprinters…)
by Sarah Connolly on Sep 28, 2011 7:14 AM EDT up reply actions
well, at least my performance matched my name
Sadly, the name still remains apt for 2012.
Thanks for the work on the game and the everyone’s efforts to boost knowledge and appreciation.
Congratulations to those on the podium
And many thanks for running this game. My team highlighted my lack of knowledge, but it’s been a great way to learn more about women’s cycling
by shepherds_crook on Sep 28, 2011 7:56 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
Huge thanks to Monty, Jens, and any other wVDS organizers. This humiliating game certainly helped spark my interest in women’s cycling.
But my biggest thanks to jsallee00 for making my 112th placing look better.

And I missed out by ONE place.

Well, happy to be on the podium at the end of a long tough race.
I led for so long so I was a bit gutted when I turned round to see the chasers bearing down on me. I forgot to eat. Schoolgirl error. I had nothing left for the final climb. But congratulations to my rivals, worthy winners. It all about building up the next season now. I’m off to Curacao and then some rest.
It's pronounced "Int-CHOW-stie"
Congratulations on the podium - good effort
Competition will be tighter next year now we all know a smidgen more about women’s racing. And here comes GreenEdge! Woot! Woot! I hope they signed Arndt.
YAY!!!!!
After expecting to be firmly near the bottom I’m rather chuffed to be (only just) in the top forty…

In a stunning upset, Team Lady Marmottes has lost the wVDS challenge cup to Majope’s Chamois Full of Bliss.
As agreed, since we lost, these are currently being shipped to Sweden:

We fully expect to see a photo of these on Jens feet in the next couple of weeks.

Pigeons took her shoes off in the car after a day in Copenhagen
It made me dizzy and disoriented and I think we accidentally drove to Sweden via Nordrhein-Westphalen
It's true!
Jens suggested I did – and said of course he wouldn’t mind… until I did & he went green-ish & had to open all the car windows!

No prizes but looks good on my palmares. I only made it there because of all the great stuff on women’s cycling I get to read at the Cafe. Thanks PdCers and especially Pigeons, Monty, Jens, Gavia and anyone else I forgot. This was a great game. I hope some more pro cyclists and DS play next year.
I was at 199 in the mens VDS last time I checked – am I in with a chance at the combined podium?
