Travel help - Brussels to Hoogerheide for CX Worldcup

I just found out that I get to travel to Brussels on Jan 22 for business. Yay! And then, I find out it's the same day as the Hoogerheide Worldcup. Woohoo!

Now I have a lot of questions and knew I had to come to PdC to get assistance. I hope you can help me.

I land at about 9:30 and want to get up to the race quickly and directly from the airport.

  • What's the best way to get from Brussels Airport to Hoogerheide?
  • Should I rent a car or is there a good public transportation option (train + taxi?)
  • If car rental, will finding parking be an issue?
  • How much would the train (to Antwerp?) + taxi cost?
  • Do I need to buy a ticket in advance?
  • What else am I forgetting (besides a steady focus on beer, frites and mayo)?
Any help you can lend is appreciated.

Seems pretty impossible to get there on time by public transport

not in the least because it include a border crossing, and Hoogerheide doesn’t have a train station. So yeah, rental car is the way to go. From the route description in Dutch:

From Antwerp take the A12 / A4 motorway in the direction “Bergen op Zoom” (Nederland). When on the A58 / A4 take exit 30 “Hoogerheide – Ossendrecht – Putte”. Follow signs “Hoogerheide” and later “UCI World Cup”. Different parking opportunities are indicated along the way.

(“Afrit” means exit. Click for larger.)

Tickets can be bought at the venue for €10. Parking is usually free. Beer etc. usually sold via tokens, sold in batches of 5 or 10 at the entrance.

Funny

Ok, so let’s see so far, rent a car, follow traffic signs in dutch, drink 5 to 10 beers, scream loud, sleep in car, drive back.

travel

yeah
could’n find an easy way by train and bus

the fasted way i could possibly find would take prox 3 h 20 min travel by train and bus to hoogerheide

and you would at least switch trains 3 times and take 2 different buses

greets

train + taxi

price brussels airport to antwerpen centraal train station and back
in second class 19.20 €
in first class 27.40 €

taxi
just made a phone call to one off the antwerp taxi companies

price for one way ride antwerpen centraal hogerheide prox 70 €

Good info

That’s probably what I’d do, I guess. Although a (competitively priced) taxi ride back might be harder to arrange. Perhaps you could sweet talk your way onto one of the 100 Belgian fan buses. Hitchhiking at the exit of the main parking lot with a sign ‘Antwerpen’ would be easy, I’d bet. Success may depend on not vomiting.

Did Churchill say that?

Success depends on not vomiting! Maybe I give away beer to secure a ride back.

Geert – big thanks for checking on taxi cost.

Looks like rental car wins

20 for train + 70 for taxi =90 vs about the same cost for rental car from airport. Anyone know if there are cheaper rentals?

English or out of luck?

Is English spoken in the Antwerp and Brussels area (sorry most of my travel has been British commonwealth countries)

Thanks again.

Yeah, everybody apart from the older generation is pretty good at it.

Some people are better than most English people. Exhibit A: broerie.

Maybe it's worth it to see if you can hitch a ride from one of the supportersbuses?

One of the Niels Albert buses leaves from Tremelo at 11h that day, and it’ll cost you only 14 euros for a round trip.
http://www.supportersclubnielsalbert.be/pagina.php?kw=BUSKALENDER

Of course, you’d have to get to tremelo… Maybe they can pick you up somewhere along the way? Can’t hurt to ask.

Sven Nys’ buses leave from Baal and cost 7 euro (though it is international buses cost more, Hoogerheide is so barely international). Of course, you’d have to get to Baal.

http://www.clubsvennys.be/

Stybs’ and Pauwels’ supportersclubs won’t be of much use, their home is inches away from Hoogerheide. Klaas Vantornhout’s website is woefully out of date.

was thinking

along the same line

travel to Tremelo on a Sunday is not an easy thing to do

http://reisinfo.delijn.be/reisinfo/faces/routeplanner/overzicht/GevondenRoutes.jsp

Baal is even more difficult

by geert on Jan 10, 2012 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

Hence the 'pick him up along the way' bit ;)

The route from Tremelo to Hoogerheide would take the bus sort of past Berchem station, and a train from Brussels to Berchem is a 40min direct trip. Or Mechelen, Mechelen works too. That’s only 20min by train.

So, Ron, maybe ask the Niels Albert fanpeople if they could stop at Berchem station and pick you up? Stress that you’re a helpless, cross-loving, Albert-fanatic :D Send them a mail and if they say no then, well, you need an alternative.

No, apparently not!

I remember reading the whole article. The supposed lovers tell all about how sneaky he apparently was with his two mobile phones. Mostly, it just makes me laugh and, frankl, grin, that a cross rider would get on the front of a major gossip mag. Can you imagine this in England?!

The daughter of a celebrety (the woman in the picture)

She’s famous, but nobody really knows why. I think she’s a former miss Belgium beauty or something like that. I didn’t know she had a kid.

Well it might be a little different for me as I'm a girl.

I would need a fainting couch, you see, and would go all of a flutter at frequent intervals. For you, probably a woolly BKCP hat would do, or something from here: http://www.nielsalbert.com/fanshop.php Also, over Christmas I noticed on sale a bag rather creepily emblazened with a very close closeup of his face! They made me laugh.
