"We took into account the fact that the women, and in particular Chloe, earn bugger all from the sport. And if in fact we imposed an immediate $200 fine that would be a very severe penalty.
"For the blokes a $200 fine would be a slap on the wrist. And if the guys earning the big bucks did something similar they could expect a much more savage outcome, but Chloe would be on 10,000Euros or something a year, she has to pay for all her own accommodation, all her own living expenses.
"Chloe was very contrite and we said to her 'we respect your right to savagely criticise the attitude of the UCI and things that Pat McQuaid has done and said, but you can't attack the messenger. You can attack the message, and we respect her right to do that, but calling someone a dick or a dickhead just doesn’t elevate the discussion at all and she knew that.'"
Hosking cops a sympathetic fine

well done on cycling australia's part
"Ants don’t worry, they operate like a fantastic team, they accept obstacles and deal with them in a positive manner, they don’t complain and remain positive. An ant doesn’t work on emotion, is proactive and always chooses the ant role."
nice the way
they managed to call McQuaid a dick again. Ha ha ha! Or dickhead, if you’re not into the whole brevity thing.
That's my take on it too. LOL

+1
i don’t think they could have backed her and her points any better.

Love this outcome.

Huh?
I agree that the “punishment” is a good outcome, but it’s not a well stated argument. He’s not a messenger. He has primary responsibility for UCI policy. There’s really no distinction between calling his policies idiotic (if that’s what you think) and calling him an idiot, since he’s responsible for the policies. I would have thought the point was simply that “dick” is an inappropriately offensive term.
So. . .
What term IS appropriately offensive enough to refer to McQuaid?

Only if you're prepared to give Chloe a passport.

A word has yet to be invented for a what a total whatever it is he is, but he is one, and a total one at that.

See, they don't really agree with you.
So this is just one step more polite towards McQ than being blatantly “tongue in cheek.” They are INTENTIONALLY not making sense, and trusting people to see that they’re doing so. Heck, you saw it, you just didn’t assume they could be intending you to see through the words to the actual meaning. But I’m pretty sure they want you (and Chloe, and maybe even McQ—except not in an actionable way) to see the meaning that they stuck in behind the silly argument.

I especially like that they not just repeat the fact she called him a dick
but add one better by calling hm a dickhead too!

well all the debate about McQuaid on this
whilst bringing out my inner dyspeptic old fart to an extent also deflects attention away from some salient points can make about the event that she was racing in when she made her remarks.
The race manual lists the prize money for the day/week. Womens prize money, away from a headline figure, woefully disparate. Her stage win valued at a third of man’s race win, her third place on gc worth 75% of the mens prize, no support/development races for “non-elite” women whilst there were two for the men etc etc despite no real extra expenses occurred in putting the races on.
In cold hard cash terms the womens racing in the event is valued less apparently, and that is despite the womens race having a prize fund that makes the giro donne’s look like loose change. The “lack of development” or any other phrase you want to use is right there up front, bang in the centre.
If she had stood there and criticized that she would probably have been called ungracious at best, and probably have been fined for real, but she would have had a much better point.
Well, if she'd said that, I doubt it would have been reported in the cycling media!

a demand for equal pay for an equal days work
(on one of the, admittedly, all too rare occasions that such events are run in parallel and as such the demand can quite unequivocally be made)
made of the sponsor (Jayco) that supports this race, as well a sun tour, sponsors Uni-SA, the national team, and basically bankrolls Greenedge – at the first race greenedge were appearing in. Might have garnered a paragraph or two, even in the cycling media, particularly when nothing else of anything is happening elsewhere.
As it was many outside headlines, at her expense on occasion, that only really reported the name calling. A predictable finding of disrepute, a predictable psuedo slap on the wrist, much merriment at the name calling from the cycling media, twitterati et al, a new soubriquet for McQuaid, feck all real change or even the slightest movement forwards in the debate (arguably the reverse judging from your link in the live thread) and they will all no doubt be back next year to race for unequal prize money once again under a UCI still headed by McQuaid.
When asked the guy announcing the “fine” and the riders team manager are now on record disputing her analysis and demands at the present time, and very little on the record support of any kind for her from any quarter apparent for what she said.
The Jayco guy seems like the kind of sponsor who could have been “embarrased” into giving another 5K to level it up, or at the very least to send down a demand that the money was spread equally. (Even the type of sponsor that could be convinced there was more positive mileage to be made by being at the forefront of such a change. He seems like one of the good guys who spends plenty enough)
She was asked a direct question about Pat M and his Cph comment
Perhaps she can be excused for simply answering that question . And it was not only the name caling that was reported but her explanation for calling him that.
My favourite part was that they basically said
“She doesn’t get paid enough for us to fine her.”
I'm not just a smartarse. Other parts of me are sometimes clever as well.
I did like that a lot
Ah, Australians! I love you all!

Sometimes, those words work best...judicious use is the thing :)
