TDU Stage 4 Live-ish: Settle back with Auntie

(This photo of the glorious one is courtesy of flatbagger, our man on the spot)
One need only look at the profile to suspect that Greipel will once again steal the stage. He's a very worthy contender, but young Bling Matthews is feeling very despondent. He thinks he's let his Rabo boys down because he couldn't keep Renshaw's wheel today. I hope Hutarovich doesn't win because listening to his name being mangled in such spectacular fashion, and repeatedly, is like fingernails on a blackboard. I wouldn't quibble with a GE win either, but short of a miracle, I can't see it happening. They don't seem too downhearted if the twitter chat about the captain of the ship in Italy falling/slipping into the lifeboat is any indication. PS. The last three kilometres are so flat, this is a finish for the big men.
This is how it looks at the beginning of the stage:
1. GREIPEL, Andre (GER)Lotto-Belisol11:54:52 2.KOHLER, Martin (SUI)BMC0:08 3.MATTHEWS, Michael* (AUS)Rabobank0:12 4.DE GENDT, Thomas (BEL)Vacansoleil -DCM0:14 5.GERRANS, Simon (AUS)GreenEDGE0:16 6.BAKELANTS, Jan (BEL)RadioShack-Nissanst 7.BOASSON HAGEN, Edvald* (NOR)Sky Procyclingst 8.VORGANOV, Eduard (RUS)Katushast 9.DENNIS, Rohan* (AUS – SA) UNI SA – Australia0:17 10.FLORENCIO CABRE, Xavier (ESP)Katusha0:20

Video recap
At some points the commentator suggests Thomas DeGendt is trying to win those sprintermediates for the money. Nope, I’m 110% sur he will try to finish as high as possible in the GC.
Normally TDG tends to let other riders win those intermediates. He focuses on the stagewin. But he didn’t do that here, he made it pretty clear he wanted every possible time bonus and there can only be one explanation for that.
:)

by broerie on Jan 19, 2012 2:42 PM EST up reply actions

He is a bit too confident IMO.

He told the Belgian press before the season that his goals for this season are:
- Ride a good GC in Giro and Vuelta
- Win a few stages in WorldTour stageraces
That is a bit much for a guy who’s never had a good GC placing in a WT stagerace and has only won two stages in WT stageraces.
On the other hand: I do believe he’s got an enormous physical potential. If he can find a good physical trainer and a DS who manages to control him, he can become one of the greats.

In some ways I'm happy that Greipel took the jersey from Kohler.

Taking the leaders jersey by snapping up those int. bonus seconds without getting close to the real front at any of the finishes doesn’t quite do it for me.

(I know the tactic is smart etc, but ….)

So the Greenies are banking all the $$’s on Gerrans taking the uphill sprint on Sat and thereby the GC lead?

by Uphill on Jan 19, 2012 12:02 PM EST reply actions

Well he's the only guy who can climb, so what should they do?

A little surprising that they don't have someone up there going for these flat stage wins

Probably a combination of the dominance of Lotto (and “just Andre”) and their guys not feeling on form?

Personally I’d rather see the Green Edge team hit MSR fully primed than peak for the TDU….

Come out of the blocks aiming big.

I don't know

You have a team built around
1) Sprinters and
2) Australians

It seems insane to not to target a race built around
1) Sprinting and
2) Australians

"Oh man, it’s going to take days to kill all these people!"

by ncrow on Jan 19, 2012 12:45 PM EST up reply actions

Logic ? You're applying Logic?

While your point might be logical, it bares no resemblance to the realities. The squad is clearly not here for the stage wins.

Stage 1 – Highest finisher Gerrans the rest of the team came in 1:40 down – so I gather they had been dropped before the crash ?

Stage 2 – Highest finisher Gerrans Meyrs was there with him, but the rest of the team came in many minutes down

Stage 3 – Highest finisher – Spew’n McEwen, Gerrans up there as well, rest of the team in the back half of the bunch (or out the back in the case of O’Grady and Turbo)

These results are not a sprinting squad misfiring in the bunch sprints, but a team supporting one guy – Gerrans. Even if that team does appear to be made up of sprinter dudes.

Thus I suspect that they are aiming for the GC with Gerrans, and riding their sprinters into form for bigger races over the pond…

by muk on Jan 19, 2012 1:01 PM EST up reply actions

Touche

I was trying to make the argument that they should be though.

When I take a closer look at their lineup though, none of their sprinters are Greipel-quality except Goss. And I will acknowledge that Goss – their biggest star – should not be in form in January. (Especially with how great he looked last spring – like him taking pulls in the mountains for Tony Martin – compared to his middling summer performances)

But still, with a team with so many sprinter (Australian ones no less) they should be contesting the sprints. Perhaps that is McEwen’s role and he just got caught up in the crash the 1st day. Who knows about the 2nd day.

"Oh man, it’s going to take days to kill all these people!"

They're hoping they have bigger fish to fry in Spring I think.

Most Australian riders only catch a glimpse of winter, but when they were boys dreaming on the sofa,

O’grady’s P-R win, McEwen’s dominance. These were the stuff of hope AND dreams :)

winning is key. Even a small win somewhere.

Clarke’s win etc. Evans’ of cause was the greatest of all.

by Uphill on Jan 19, 2012 7:55 PM EST up reply actions

We only have 1 SSR here (Denmark) and the local boys are expected to

dominate and win everything or its seen as a failure (like in ’11). Granted theTdU is a considerable bigger race.

by Uphill on Jan 19, 2012 1:03 PM EST up reply actions

It's also in January

I guess that cuts both ways though. On one hand, you’d expect Australians to be in better form. On the other, being in form in January is probably a bad idea.

"Oh man, it’s going to take days to kill all these people!"

by ncrow on Jan 19, 2012 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

Also don't overlook the value of the win for Clarke from the UNI-SA team

pretty much everyone recognizes that team as the National Team for riders who don’t have a contract with a big name team.

A win for that team is as good for national pride as a win for Green Edge (maybe even more so given the underdog nature of it all)

My guess is O’Grady will be selected on sentiment (I think only one other Australian has made it to six Games), Evans is a certainty barring ill health, as is Goss, and Gerrans is hungry. Big challenge.

FWIW

I think that a lot of credit goes to the team at Auntie. Their commentary is so raw and fresh, so damn Aussie (and by that I mean just wrapped up in the awesomeness of sport in general), that it makes it a joy to listen to, for me anyway.

The perfect situation would be streaming live video (on mute) and the Grandstand guys up loud and clear.

While I can’t understand a word of what they are saying, I get the impression that the team at Sporza have a similar vibe on air.

That may be

But I do love that film. Unlike, say, Kath & Kim, it never makes fun of its protagonists in a mocking or derisory way (even though it does make fun of them). There were some scenes in Fargo that were similar. ‘Laugh at these people all you like’, the film seemed to say, ‘but you’d be hard-pressed to measure up against their worth.’

Tucker' is a common way to refer to food in rural areas.

Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong
Under the shade of a coolibah tree,
And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled
“You’ll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me”

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
“You’ll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me”
And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled,
“You’ll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me”.

Down came a jumbuck to drink at that billabong,
Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee,
And he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker bag,
“You’ll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me”.

I will admit to liking Foster's, once

In the US South, having been served pretty watery rice-based beer for many weeks, and on a stinking hot day, a friend produced a bottle of the old amber nectar for my enjoyment.

Fairly leaped down the throat. Foster’s has never tasted so good as it did that day.

after it arrived i had a fun time at the king arthur flour website, ordering bunches of ingredients.

my house is rather cold by most standards (usually btwn 63-66 F). the first try didn’t even rise. not enough heat. so, for this second batch, i measured out the white whole wheat flour for the recipe from the freezer last night. this morning, after feeding the puppies and taking care of the bunny, i measured out the rest of the ingredients (except the water and yeast) and left them on my radiant cooktop with the fan lights on (two 75w bulbs). i almost moved the breadmaker over onto the cooktop. let that sit for 1.75 hours. then i filled up the bread machine, and about 4 hours later, a loaf of bread. tasty tasty.

Interesting fact from the TDU ticker:
Some of you might remember this amazing story. It’s hard to believe it happened almost ten years ago to the day, but it did and it’s still one of the most incredible stories in SANTOS Tour Down Under History. On a searing hot Barossa Valley day, on stage five of the 2002 TDU (Saturday Jan 19), AIS rider Michael Rogers turned right at the bottom of Mengler’s Hill, in desperate pursuit of Mapei rider Cadel Evans.

"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'

by Seahorse on Jan 19, 2012 10:13 PM EST reply actions

More to that
A few hundred metres up the climb, Rogers somehow collided with the whiteboard motorcycle being ridden by Brian O’Grady and destroyed his rear derailleur. With no team support nearby, Rogers needed a bike fast or his chance at a TDU win would be gone. As a disgusted Rogers dismounted his broken machine and hurled it to the ground, up stepped Adam Pyke, a Victorian amateur cyclist watching the race from the side of the road.

CN reporting:
Ok, my moles at the finish are telling me Daniele Bennati (RadioShack-Nissan) and Gerald Ciolek (Omega Pharma QuickStep) for second and third. That’s not comfirmed though?

Martin Kohler (BMC) back in the race lead.

Surprised Greipel cracked already

Isn’t it tomorrow’s….today’s….damn international date line….the Willunga stage…supposed to be the one that would blow the race open?

So GreenEDGE are playing all their cards for Gerrans. Makes sense. Looking at the current GC I’d expect Matthews, Freire, Ciolek, and Bennati to fall tomor…whenever. Boasson Hagen likely won’t. Don’t really know much about Bakelants, Vorganov, or Dennis.

by Aly Edge on Jan 20, 2012 2:41 AM EST reply actions

What about Kohler? he's in the leader's jersey. GE also have Meyer, which I think they're hoping many forget.

Don't know much about him either

But yeah, if he’s made all the selections so far, he must be going ok.

by Aly Edge on Jan 20, 2012 4:00 AM EST up reply actions

So Top Nine in GC is:

1 Martin Kohler (Sui) BMC 15:03:34
2 Michael Matthews (Aus) Rabobank 0:00:02
3 Oscar Freire (Spa) Katusha
4 Gerald Ciolek (Ger) Omega Pharma-QuickStep 0:00:06
5 Simon Gerrans (Aus) GreenEDGE 0:00:08
6 Daniele Bennati (Ita) RadioShack-Nissan
7 Edvald Boasson Hagen (Nor) Sky Procycling
8 Jan Bakelants (Bel) RadioShack-Nissan
9 Eduard Vorganov (Rus) Katusha
There are a number of contenders such as Valverde and GHH at 12 seconds back, so tomorrow will be interesting.

Top nine??

Something against Rohan Dennis?

I just usually don’t see a “top nine” get presented like this.

I'm just curious why you cut it off at 9

Why not 11, or 13, or 8? Seems equally arbitrary.

by Aly Edge on Jan 20, 2012 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

I was assuming those were the only results that came through

I frequently find results to all kinds of races to random numbers, especially putting it together via twitter, & post rather than wait for top 10 – or if they’re said really fast, & I can remember up to 8 or 9, but not 10!

Aka Pigeons!

I'm hoping he doesn't but more out of fandom than anything else. I think it will be good for Gilbert to have more

competition this year.
