Around SBN: Ryder Hesjedal Wins Giro d'Italia

TDU Stage 5: Third Thread! Bottom of Willunga Hill. Go Gerro!

Breakaway at about 2 minutes.

Stuart O’Grady – GreenEdge Cycling Team
Takashi Miyazawa – Team Saxo Bank
Nathan Haas – Garmin-Barracuda
Thomas De Gendt – Vacansoleil-DCM Pro Cycling Team
Andrew Fenn – Omega Pharma – QuickStep
Kristof Goddaert – AG2R La Mondiale

State of play at the beginning of the stage

1 Martin Kohler (Sui) BMC 15:03:34 2 Michael Matthews (Aus) Rabobank 0:00:02
3 Oscar Freire (Spa) Katusha
4 Gerald Ciolek (Ger) Omega Pharma-QuickStep 0:00:06
5 Simon Gerrans (Aus) GreenEDGE 0:00:08
6 Daniele Bennati (Ita) RadioShack-Nissan
7 Edvald Boasson Hagen (Nor) Sky Procycling
8 Jan Bakelants (Bel) RadioShack-Nissan
9 Eduard Vorganov (Rus) Katusha
There are a number of contenders such as Valverde and GHH at 12 seconds back, so tomorrow will be interesting.

Star-divide

Menglers did some sifting and sorting on Stage 4 and Willunga Hill should do the rest. Michael Matthews is a sprinter who can climb a bit. Gerro is a climber who can sprint a bit. Valverde is better than almost everyone. Kohler's palmares is very thin and I have no sense of him as a rider, except that he's worked hard this week. EBH (who is obviously nervous around kangaroos) is always a force to be reckoned with and Rogers and Hayman will work tirelessly to position him. Others to watch: Any one of the Euskies, Matthew Lloyd, Cam Meyer, Sergey Lagutin(just because), GVA, plus anyone else you want to cheer for. Personally, I'd like Bling to win today...highly unlikely...and Gerro to win the overall on Sunday. It's been a great week of racing, and today should be no different.

There will be live TV coverage. Check your local guides. I apologise for not being able to do a Jens; I can't do time zones. Personally, I'll be with Auntie until the last hour or so. It's more fun than listening to Phil and Paul.

ramones lyrics

Tanqueray and tonic’s my favorite drink
I don’t like anything colored pink
That just stinks, it’s not for me

It feels like somebody put something
Somebody put something in my drink
Somebody put something, somebody put something

Blurred vision and dirty thoughts
Feel out of place, very distraught
Feel somethings coming on

Peter, I've been upset before and frustrated. But you alienate people when you do this.

You’re not a stupid man, and having you in the live threads has been great fun. Piti is a popular nickname…live with it. And don’t draw more people into your argument. Instead, maybe it’s time to draw a veil over this stage for you. I can’t make you, but perhaps you can accept that my reasons for suggesting this are well intentioned.

well if "fuck that guy" is allowed/encouraged/not in the least seen as derogatory to professional cycling everywhere then I honestly think

the general audience here, not everyone for sure, but a lot it seems, have got some serious issues that I believe are not acceptable, and if I choose to stay here and continue to post even after a very worthy winner wins a race and he is in a rude and cowardly written post nastily referred to and the person who started the post sees nothing wrong, well what can I do

So do I actually. What I thought I was saying is that the fight would escalate and it would feel awful for you...

and yes, for me too. The thing I’ve liked most about the TDU threads has been the almost total lack of snark or argument.

Of course i saw something wrong, and I’ve defended others before who’ve said what you did. They have in my opinion framed their arguments in more constructive ways than you. Yeehoo has made the argument you should have made if you wanted people to listen to you. You don’t get far flying off the handle. And believe it or not, when i pleaded with you to stop, it was for your sake not mine. I’m on record all over this site as defending dopers…except Ricco.

my apologies for what I said, sorry

until teddvdw said he also agreed that the “f that guy” comment was way outta line, no-one not one other had said anywhere they thought that comment was in anyway bad, and we all just got so sidetracked because my very emotional original post was unintentionally in-the-spur-of-the-finish-line moment typed out as a personal attack on you all, when I really am happy to be here (as you can see I’m still here and apologizing) with you all. I also don’t once someone has done their time get all anti that rider, and I am not getting into a D discussion here, and I know a lot about the pressures involved and I never participated myself, but when I competed as a Cat 1 amateur for La Redoute-Motobecane in Roubaix in 1983, I sure saw the culture around me. I and you both am sure are aware there were in the past many varying levels of participation and hopefully today the overall level is much lower than previous. In my PdCafe posts ALWAYS from the beginning you can go back to my posts since Jan 2009, I have been totally supportive of all riders because I love the RACING, I leave the judging to others.

You've still misunderstood the rule.

1. The rule is a rule of ettiquette, not a rule of justice. The point of invoking it is not to start an argument, but to stop one. Please respect that and stop having this one.

2. There is no rule about profane language. If you really don’t like that, I’m afraid you’re going to be uncomfortable here.

3. There IS a rule about directly attacking other posters. Your original reply actually broke that rule too. We don’t say ‘screw you’ to one another (except in obvious fun).

I understand that your personal standards may be different than the standards here. But these are the standards here and they are the standards we have agreed upon. Politeness, here, involves respecting that when its pointed out to you.

Expressions of joy or dismay at the results of a race, in pretty much whatever terms they come out, are part and parcel of the conversations we do have here. We’ve all agreed not to take them personally, or make a personal issue of them, even if we disagree.

The limit is we try to avoid explicit references to doping. This has been explained repeatedly.

Dude.

The way this is typically handled here is as follows: if people feel that someone is crossing the line, they say so. Then the subject gets dropped or moved to another thread. We don’t continue to argue it, we just respect that people have been made uncomforable (since the point is that not everyone wants to participate in that discussion every time they watch a race). The spirt of the rule is to stop these conversations, not to prolong them.

Please respect the spirt of the rule.

yeah, i wasn't necessarily braver than anyone else

just happened to agree in not liking those comments. (plus you know, most people just want this whole conversation to end – when some hardheaded people get going on things like this they can become interminable …) But I mean those comments make me more and more of a valverde fan every time. And i didn’t specify, but i’m not sure i’d want to discourage those comments exactly in an official way – i think better that we learn to live with each other’s transgressions to a degree.

On the other hand, perhaps a little voluntary restraint would only be fair – i mean most of the valverde hatred i think comes from his doping history and in theory these are people who are disgusted by riders not playing fair – for those whose hate is coming from doping, then maybe they could tone down their comments a little in the live threads.

But i donno, then again, i’ve come around to sort of enjoying their pissiness. It might take some fun away if they quit. Go ahead folks, eat your liver, Valv Piti wins again! Cuz he’s a hell of a racer.

The 'debate' reminded of someone who shall remain nameless and who also went at the live/non-live doping stuff

like a dog with a bone. I wonder if he’s forgotten?

What is that even supposed to mean?

Many of us aren’t as inclined to forgive and forget as you are. If simply writing “valv piti” constitutes “bringing up baby”/“doping talk”, then I suspect we will have a lot of “transgressions” of that nature in the upcoming months. If we can’t even make subtle or not-so-subtle references to the proven cheating of some riders , or express our annoyance at the success of such riders (or any rider??), or swear, in the live threads without breaking someone’s heart, then I fear many tongues will fall off due to recurring “biting of the tongue”.

quote from movistar manager - talk about talking up your man!

Gutierrez concluded with the assessment that Valverde will not contest Gerrans’ leadership during the final criterium in Adelaide on Sunday. "We’re not a sprinters’ team," said the Spaniard. "In a one-on-one sprint, Alejandro would beat Gerrans, as he would beat Petacchi, Freire, Boonen etc. Probably the only one he wouldn’t beat is Cavendish.
-———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-
wow what has he been smoking???

by Maratsafin on Jan 21, 2012 10:02 AM EST reply actions

Well

He was beating Freire before he was suspended. And Freire was beating him. Very competitive between the two at Pais Vasco a couple years ago. So if Oscarito is the measuring stick, then, yeah, he could beat Petacchi sometimes and Boonen these days as well since that isn’t saying much.

by ursula on Jan 21, 2012 10:50 AM EST up reply actions

Sure. But everyone but Cavendish

means he’ll be outsprinting Greipel and Kittel and Farrar and all of the other ones too

by tgsgirl on Jan 21, 2012 11:15 AM EST up reply actions

Important to notice the generational gap here

An older rider (Jiggy) talking about other older riders (Valverde, Freire, Boonen, Petacchi) with only Cav of the younger crowd included-because he broke through before those others you cite. Has Jiggy ever raced against Kittel? If at all, not enough to make an impression. Greipel was still confined to the small shit races when Valverde was last rampant. Farrar had not really made a breakthrough either. And I’d say that the Valverde of a couple years ago would give all of those guys a run for their money.

But it will be interesting to see how much of Valverde’s top end speed still exists after the layoff. Not that he will use it against the other sprinters because he doesn’t do real bunch sprints, but just to see what he has left and what he’s lost. He was always able to out kick the other GC boys: can he still do that?

by ursula on Jan 21, 2012 3:07 PM EST up reply actions

He looks really skinny to me, which could affect his top end sprint.

Then again, if you listen to the team doctor

Piti has been doing 3000 situps every day.

assuming that he spends a third of his day riding, a third sleeping that leaves him 8 hrs, and unless my math is off that’s one every 8 seconds…..

Badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger...

by TheFigurehead on Jan 21, 2012 1:38 PM EST up reply actions

I probably shouldn't, but I'm going to argue with you on this one.

Taking for granted out very limited rule set (a soft ban on politics, a harder ban on doping talk in live threads, and a pretty comprehensive ban on ad homeniem attacks directed at other posters), I’m going to draw a conclusion about why keeping it that way makes good sense.

We’re sports fans. I’m pretty well convinced that it’s more or less impossible to be emotionally invested in sports (something all of us here enjoy) without also having fairly strong positive and negative reactions to some athletes / outcomes. Thus, especially in a live thread, strongly worded expressions of joy and dismay are pretty much inevitable. You might as well get upset at water for being wet. As far as I can see, people being upset at the result of this race aren’t really doing anything materially different from people who get annoyed when Cavendish wins all the time. Nor is there any more reason for anyone not Valverde to take people’s views about Valverde personally than there is for people not Cavendish to get personally offended by folks saying “Bah Cavendish.”

by Ed K on Jan 21, 2012 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

you're seriously equating "bah cavendish" to "fuck that guy [sic av]"?

by umwolverine on Jan 21, 2012 2:23 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, I am.

I really don’t think they’re materially different. By the way, I say that because I think that ‘Bah Cavendish’ is dismissive and harsh, not because I’m denying that the comment about Valverde is any big deal. It’d suck pretty badly to be either of them and read that (and being a professional athlete pretty much entails learning to shrug that feeling off). That said, statements of either kind are inevitable in fandom. They simply are. Trying to ban them is pointless, as is getting seriously upset about them or taking them personally.

by Ed K on Jan 21, 2012 2:37 PM EST up reply actions

The sentiment behind the anti-cav/HTC/Pistolero/EvilCricket comments

haven’t been that different from those comments. BTW they weren’t long anti-rants, they’re one sentence outbursts. Much of the meaning behind is inferred by those that took offense.

I often blurt out "fuck " “fuck no” “dammit” when a race doesn’t have the outcome I want. This oversensitiveness to anything that is considered as negative is a bit offputting. Don’t take emotion out of everything for the sake of political correctness.

by Jens on Jan 21, 2012 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah. I mean fuck you Jens and Ed.

What you two say is basically how I see it. And I say that while at the same time sometimes getting over-sensitive about the Bah remarks regardless of who is being bah’ed. When I get to feeling that way I think it is only fair that I remove myself from the live thread so others can go about their cheering and booing. Its me that needs the Time Out, is what I’m saying.

Probably Valverde wil get booed a bunch this year. Definitely at the Tour introductions and no doubt elsewhere. And it seems that he’s definitely using that as a motivational tool-and judging from Jiggy’s comments, the team is gonna use it too. And there’s more than one team in the history of sports that have used that Disrespect chip to overachieve. So we get another interesting subplot for this season! Yea for subplots!

Also

Every time someone says “fuck that guy”, his VDS price goes up.

So it evens out.

Well, it was worth a try.... but Klodi will be very cheap yes?

After all, he is in the service of a new pretender to the crown. Sigh…

Hmmm

Ursula check Klodi’s price, quietly raises it four points….

Just kidding…or am I?

No really, here’s a clue: Klodi is the same price he always seems to be. (Yes, I know his price varies some, but…average it out.)
