FSA DS all I really care about right now

So here I am...staring at the front page of my Fave website, PdC. All I am seeing is something called cyclocross. Although I do remember reading that Oscarito would never have started road racing if he could have made a decent living at cyclocross, and it does sound awesome...sort of, I just can't bring myself to care.

I have never been a junkie, and even when I smoked a pack a day, I have never really jonesed for anything. Right now I feel like an FSA DS junkie in withdrawal. I sit at my computer poring over FSA DS spread sheets trying to see if I can fend off the shakes till, what freaking February!

FEBRUARY! Seriously FEBRUARY!!!!!

I mean we will have had what, two Pro Tour stage races by then! I know they are not in Europe or anything and they don't count toward FSA DS the only thing that matters in the whole cycling world! Still its like actual bike races with actual WT teams. I know I have already had two post FSA DS rehash threads, but until someone tell me I have a quota or no one shows up to comment on the stupid things I may just keep churning them out. It can't be any harder than writing a Xanth novel, can it?

Enough Preamble, and I know those guys who wrote the one for the U.S. constitution did a much better job then I, but heck I'm not starting a war.

I've heard it said somewhere that you need to have restricted riders on the payroll if you want a top finish in FSA DS. The numbers seem to bear that out. only one team in three years has made the top ten without a restricted rider. Only one team in 2011 and 2012 has made the top ten with only one restricted rider. I made a chart detailing the construction of the top ten teams from the last three years. I have broken riders into 3 broad categories and one sub category. Restricted riders are 18 points or more, Double Restricted riders are 21 points or more. Constrained riders are between 8 and 16 points, they are not restricted yet you cannot make a team exclusively from them. Unconstrained riders cost between 1-6 points, if you chose you could build a team of these riders without any more expensive riders.

Support for the idea that a double restricted rider is one of the keys to being in the top ten of FSA DS. In two of the three years we have had a double restricted rider garnering the most points overall. Even if you can select the top performing Constrained riders in a given year, so can someone who selects Phil Gil, or J-rod. They are also free to pick the top constrained riders.

While it is possible in each year to have made a team exclusively containing Unconstrained riders and won that years comp, picking the top 25 scorers out of the 1000 odd Unconstrained riders each year is a total crap shoot. As you can see however the top teams select an average of 18 Unconstrained riders with the most common amount being 17. There have only been two top ten teams with 20 Unconstrained riders, and only one with 16 (although that was cyclemania the 2011 winner).

If you need a restricted rider, do you need a double restricted rider? 2 of the winning 3 teams have had one, and 8 of the 9 teams making up the top 3 each year have had one. 28 of the top 30 Teams have had a double restricted rider. Two teams in the top 30 have had a single restricted rider, both of those team had a double restricted rider. They both had the top scorer that year (Phil, J-Rod). If picking a restricted rider is necessary are they a rock solid lock?

No. The average value returned by riders costing 18 (37)or more is the same as that returned by Unconstrained riders(37). Yet only 15 out of 49 restricted riders failed to produce at least 1000 points. So even choosing a suboptimal restricted rider will likely give you a lot of points.

The Verdict?

Restricted riders are restricted for a reason. They are the best of the best. They produce points consistently and they very rarely fall flat on their faces. Only twice have restricted riders scored zero points Jen Grey and Piti and both were doping related.

Well that's like 800 words on Restricted riders. hope you enjoyed.

'cause you won't get another FSA DS team until FEBRUARY!!!!!!!!!!!
