As probably lots of you guys I was checking the web and looking for the latest news about our fave riders... And I found news about this guy Stephen Cummings poor dude had to leave Volta ao Algarve because of a broken pelvis...
This news gave me this idea of something we could use here.. An injury list or suspended people/riders, after all I believe is easier for 500+ people to drop a line here then surf every cycling web page out there to find who is hurt or not... Who got suspended, caught or missed a control..
Do you get the idea of this post? I will hate to submit my VDS team... Ooops FSA DS team then find out one of my riders is out for "x" amount of time... Makes sense? It does to me... Besides there is people here that has more time or just know where to find all this info, if it wasn't for you guys I would not know half of what I know..
Hope this post becomes useful in this the last week before submitting our FSA DS teams..! Good luck everyone..!

As far as broken pelvises go. Sounds like he’ll be back either training or racing in 4 weeks. But don’t quote me on that. It may just be hopeful delusions because I submitted my VDS team with him on it days ago.

Meaning it’ll take some time to get back the form he had before the crash, which almost certainly wasn’t his peak, which might delay him reaching his peak later in the year (or it might not – what do I know?) so there’s some validity to your doubts.

it took me a while to get passed the hair and the silly tats, but dude’s a bad ass. Probably too early to expect much next week- but hopefully we’ll see an on-form Pippo this Spring.

Great idea Pablo - because I just headed on here to post something similar!
My worry is Romain Feillu. My team’s currently 10 points over and 2 riders too heavy. He DNF in stage 1 of the Tour Haut Var. That’s a strange place to DNF on the first day, since it’s only a 2-dayer. You can at least spin round day 1 and fetch some bottles on the morning of day 2 before ditching. Makes me worry that there’s something up with him, but can’t find any news.

Since Menchov is as interesting as cabbage soup he would never be on my team
but with 99% certainty he is the smarter choice of the two. If you can stomach it.

Menchov has a very good chance to win the Tour this year
Anton’s gonna be cockblocked at the Vuelta by Bert, even if he’s on his very best.
Is it really so hard to believe?
He’s one of the strongest all-rounders in the peloton. Two long time trials gives the advantage to riders like him, Evans, Nibali (Basso at the Giro, I wonder which if any of the other two GT’s Nibbles gets for himself), Wiggins, etc. (Andy will be lucky to finish 5th this year) I wouldn’t describe “Denny” as the odds-on favorite, I’d say Evans is the odds-on favorite, but he’s got a good chance.

Look at his TT results last year in 2 GTs
and tell me he’s a time trial specialist.
He got his results last year by hanging on in the mountains.
He got his results in prior years by loading up on red blood cells for the key races.
The main determinant of his success this year is whether he dares to dope himself up again.
I'd use the phrase "time trial specialist" to describe someone like Zabriskie or Ignatiev
A pony for whom it’s his only trick. GT all-rounders don’t necessarily need to win time trials or even come close, they just have to be better than the climb-first Schlecks, Scarponis, and Rodriguezes of the world. When he’s on his best, Menchov is.
Of course, I didn't mean specialist that sense either.
But you said “Two long time trials gives the advantage to riders like him”. That was true in his heyday, when he was indeed a Cadel-type GC rider. But these were his performances last year, when on both occasions he was fighting for high GC placings (i.e. the TTs really mattered):
Giro ITT: 34th place (35s behind Scarponi, 11s ahead of Rodriguez)
Vuelta ITT: 13th place (1m20s behind Froome, 5s ahead of Nibali).
On the other hand, he climbed ok, hanging on pretty well on the climby courses to get 8th and 5th on final GC. The mantra that extra TT miles in the TdF favor Menchov is not supported by the evidence of 2011.
As I’ve said before, I think the circumstantial evidence strongly suggests that Menchov’s strategy was to peak for a small number of races each year, and to boost that peak with transfusions. I suspect that the much greater risk of doing this, combined with advancing years, means that we will never see 2007-2009 form from him again. He got a good point haul last year by plodding around two GTs. I don’t see him getting more in 2012 by plodding around one. Unless he risks juicing himself again, of course, which is entirely possible.

I’m not making any moral judgement about whether he’s any more or less guilty than anyone else. (e.g., Pelizotti was 2nd when he won the 2009 Giro.) I quite like the guy, to be honest. But for VDS purposes, I think you’d be wise to factor the probabilities of his past into your assessment of how he’ll do in 2012.

So I looked at his VDS scores prior, and they showed that Dennis doesn’t show up other than Murcia, then Giro plus GT or Romandie plus Tour.
Even if he excels, he’d scrape 800. His results suggest something more like 550, and that’s if he does podium at the Tour.
I believe in him... top 5 at least at 1 GT.

Menchov does not show up in many places.
He always rides Murcia to win it.
Then one other stage race, and a GT.
If he bonks on the GT (and he has form at that), then he isn’t about to go out and win Lombardia.
If he comes 2nd in Murcia and the Tour, and does nothing else all year (likely!)

There’s no way Rodriguez passes it up, even considering the wrath of Bert. He could lose five minutes to Bert in the race’s one ITT (…actually, that’ll probably happen) and still finish on the podium, the route is that climby.
For Vuelta I am kind off lost...

there’s a good chance he won’t produce in one of the two. Apart from that, I agree.
No but, maintaining peak from Ardennes through Giro has been hard historically.
The only one I can really think of who has done really well in both was DiLuca and don’t ask me how he managed that.

He has said in interview that he would like a Giro stage win to complete the trifecta
so I doubt he will ride the Giro to win overall (like Anton last yr).
Problem is that if you ignore chances you might have earlier in the year, to put all your eggs in a late-season aim, if you flop then you have already missed your other chances (like Anton last yr).

Feillu is potentially better than any of them.
More consistent year-round, will defo ride the Tour, has a chance to top-5 at the Olympics…

But I just don’t have many sprinters.. I like GC guys and built my team with that in mind… So other then JJ and Lucas (obvious reason i picked them) I only have Gorilla to piss holm’s up.. besides Greipel is from my wife town in Germany…

I think there's a need for a balance.
If you pick a team full of GC men, then they take points off each other, as there’s only so many top-10s available in a limited number of valuable stage races.
Sprints, there’s loads of, and many sprinters have other talents (reasonable at classics or hillyish races).
I calculated last year that the likelihood of someone unheralded doing well in stage-race GCs was unlikely, yet to do well in a few valuable sprints was likely. So I spent bigger money on GC men, who ride more than once with real intent (in case they flunk the GT). And filled a lot of the rest of the roster with sprinty types likely to pick up points in the semi-classics etc. And Gilbert. Worked out well for me. I’m taking more of a gamble this year, but the above still holds true.
Makes a lot of sense..!
And made me go and look at my team one more time.. Could pick another sprinter but is good with 2 good ones and 2 that can still the show… 1 TT that rocks..! 3 classic guys…! 3 pure climbers and the rest GC or GKW (god knows what) I should be ok..! but nice idea of building a team that way..

I am nearly there. My final decision has now come down to:
A)
Joaquim Rodriguez, Basso, Romain Feillu
or
B)
Valverde, Samu, Marco Pinotti
So, I guess it all just comes down to – Do I think Valverde is back, or do I think a GT will be too hard for him? I’m leaning towards A as there’s less unknowns.
Ahh… or maybe if I have Basso, I shouldn’t pick Scarponi as they’ll take points off each other at the Giro. So I ought to maybe drop Scarponi.
And do I feel ok about relying on Ryder to have a bounce-back year; is that too risky?
If I drop Scarponi and Ryder, could I wedge in both JR and Valverde?…

Last I heard, CAS expected to rule on Rasmussen in late April or early May.
But there are different federations involved, different circumstances, and CAS’s involvement in one case but not the other. So I don’t think you can automatically assume that the Offredo case will have any direct bearing.

Key difference might be the notification process.
Last I read, the UCI or Danish Cycling didn’t follow due notification process. Offredo didn’t have that technicality in his defence.
I wouldn't touch him with a prop pablo. CAS will have its day.

Yeah, quite possible.
It does make sense that if the riders have to have their paperwork in order and follow the deadlines to the letter, so does the UCI.
