What, I have to work and suddenly there's no one here to watch cx? Come on, the race is halfway done already!

So
There’s snow, and this is the penultimate GVA race. Pauwels is leading the GVA trophy. Of course he is.
Lots of people together now.
Albert has forgotten how to start well again.
Frozen ground means very fast race. Not too much slippery.

Hello!
It’s snowing here too (it’s not meant to, really, this time of year, not as south & near the sea as we are)

I like the winter sunlight on snow
(mutter mutter too late in the season, mutter mutter!)
What was with DVT, actually being visible in a race, gasp!
Aka Pigeons!
I just wish there was more
(yes, I know, never content). Needs another couple dozen centimeters by tomorrow.
Yes, there’s a race tomorrow too. Don’t let me catch you all slacking off again!
Coffee cures all. ~ Gav
stop wishing for more snow please
i have to drive to work tomorrow
and i spend yesterday 4 hr and 20 min in the traffic driving from leuven to brussel
Can you claim the snow made it impossible to leave your house?

Hope everyone's warm by the way
it’s actually colder here than it was in Koksijde last week!
Aka Pigeons!
:O !!!
YOU WIN! Only -7 here this morning!

Downright balmy if you're talking C.
F, not so much.
Luxembourg is very close to Belgium--Frank Schleck
Pauwels
And maybe Stybs, who’s 16 points behind with two races to go.
Tomorrow is the final Superprestige race, Nys wants that one (his eleventh Superprestige it would be!)
Also, hi Vik!

Indeed
It’s sadly not for sale on our local highstreet….

It's a special belgian and dutch kind of gin
which has lots and lots of flavoured varieties
Coffee cures all. ~ Gav
It's *like* gin
but with a million flavours – cactus flavour = bright green, or a creamy version. Hazlenut creamy jenever is like Bailey’s, but nicer, and is a great addition to coffee
Aka Pigeons!
by Sarah Connolly on Feb 4, 2012 9:50 AM EST up reply actions
Thank you both.
Wonder how cactus flavoring made it to the Low Countries?
Luxembourg is very close to Belgium--Frank Schleck
Is there a ginger flavour?
I was thinking how good that would be!
Aka Pigeons!
by Sarah Connolly on Feb 4, 2012 9:57 AM EST up reply actions
I'm a little skeptical.
Not a huge fan of flavored drinks, but next time I’m over there I’d be happy to test a couple.
Luxembourg is very close to Belgium--Frank Schleck
I’m not a big fan of flavoured drinks either (my favourite drop being whisky), but for some of the jenever varieties I can make an exception.
by UrlaubinPolen on Feb 4, 2012 10:01 AM EST up reply actions
Yeah, sweet drinks are sort of the province of the kids over here.
But I’m curious enough to try a couple. Which do you think are the exceptions?
Luxembourg is very close to Belgium--Frank Schleck
You have to try cactus
just because…..
Aka Pigeons!
by Sarah Connolly on Feb 4, 2012 10:08 AM EST up reply actions
The vanilla one is superb. It is a bit sickly and province of the kids, but there can be no denying that it is nice. The lemon one on the other hand was rather disappointing – I normally go wild for anything lemon flavoured.
The hazelnut one is basically Baileys.
by UrlaubinPolen on Feb 4, 2012 10:10 AM EST up reply actions
Nicer than Baileys!
when are you going to be there, m? Is this a definite plan?
Aka Pigeons!
by Sarah Connolly on Feb 4, 2012 10:12 AM EST up reply actions
No, no plan.
I just figure I’ll get over eventually!
Luxembourg is very close to Belgium--Frank Schleck
Ha!
Hey, I wonder if it’s possible to get jenever by post??
Hmmm, these on amazon look a bit posher than what was being sold at the race!
Aka Pigeons!
by Sarah Connolly on Feb 4, 2012 10:14 AM EST up reply actions
Yeah, but whatever is sold at the race is race experience.
Absolutely vital.
Luxembourg is very close to Belgium--Frank Schleck
but ooooh! It is imported into the USA!
by Sarah Connolly on Feb 4, 2012 10:18 AM EST up reply actions
Will check the local boozery.
They do really well with imported beer, so maybe they have some imported liqueurs as well.
Luxembourg is very close to Belgium--Frank Schleck
some of those will be unflavoured though. I was looking for some at Bruxelles Midi on the way home but they only had unflavoured jenever and I was unsure about that purchase.
by UrlaubinPolen on Feb 4, 2012 10:15 AM EST up reply actions
That's the traditional kind
I don’t really like it, but maybe you would’ve loved it if you don’t like fruity booze.

I miss Metz
Much as I like schnapps (slivovitz is better still, but you rarely find it round these parts), you can’t drink spirits every day. Metz was a tasty light alternative – and it had one of the best TV adverts ever shown in the UK: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TUOPeNJCK8

I only know Metz
from the Autoroute du Soleil double Metz – Nancy vrooaaaarrrr
"Beer helps." -- Ant1.
What's that you say, sonny?
Do try to speak into my good ear.

Neat, in shots
Back when I was young, they’d sell them for 0.50 euro at parties. Danger, danger, high voltage!
Coffee cures all. ~ Gav
at 30% it probably takes the edge out of the gin a bit.
Could work, will have to try it at some point.
Uh yeah, it goes down very very easily
the hangover the day after is a real bitch.
Coffee cures all. ~ Gav
Thanks! What's happening in the SuperPrestige?
Can Nys end the season with a series title to go with his big bag of race wins & Belgian stripes? And if he doesn’t, is that the first season ever without a series win?
Aka Pigeons!
by Sarah Connolly on Feb 4, 2012 9:47 AM EST up reply actions
Nys is 5 points ahead of K-Pow
which is quite the big gap, cause it’s 15 points for the winner, 14 for second, 13 for third etcetera.
And no, he didn’t win a single series in 2000-2001, and only won seven races then. Shockface.
Coffee cures all. ~ Gav
Downright balmy
up til last week.
Fucking freezing now. Coldest night in 27 years in Holland.
Coffee cures all. ~ Gav
It was one of the warmest winters on record, until it got to February, in the UK at least
It’s been snowing in Barcelona, and that’s NOT normal for this time of year (or any year, really)
Aka Pigeons!
by Sarah Connolly on Feb 4, 2012 9:51 AM EST up reply actions
They had a feature on the ETB news earlier about the amount of snow in Mallorca, could threaten the Challenge.

That’s gotta be Balint :D

Anyone got a close-up of Albert's Worlds kit?
My stream VERY fuzzy, but it looks more black than Styby’s was?
Aka Pigeons!
Yes, because Niels has gone with black shorts, because he isn’t an idiot. White shorts and ’cross weather are not friends.
by UrlaubinPolen on Feb 4, 2012 9:52 AM EST up reply actions
black modesty panel for Niels?
He’s not normally the boy to be modest….

All praise Sven's fashion sense - yes, I know, you didn't see this coming -
Landbouwkrediet wanted him to wear the Belgian champs jersey with pixiegreen shorts.
He said no.
Coffee cures all. ~ Gav
If I were him I’d be ashamed to wear the national jersey because I’d want to be wearing the normal Landbouwkrediet one.
by UrlaubinPolen on Feb 4, 2012 9:57 AM EST up reply actions
Not sure i want to talk to you any more!
Belgian stripes >>>>>>>>>>landbouwkrediet, even before they went horrible light green. And I say that thinking old Landbouwkrediet was the best jersey in the peloton
Aka Pigeons!
by Sarah Connolly on Feb 4, 2012 9:59 AM EST up reply actions
You know the stupid visible from space CSF-Navigare-style jerseys make sense :p
You won’t miss them from the helicopter in the road season at least. Maybe in ‘cross it looks a bit foolish but it’s common sense on the road.
by UrlaubinPolen on Feb 4, 2012 10:01 AM EST up reply actions
Tragically, no. There were Androni Giocattoli and Aussie national champion jerseys but not Landbouwkrediet. How messed up is that?
by UrlaubinPolen on Feb 4, 2012 10:03 AM EST up reply actions
Haha, most places dont’ sell CSF Navigare anymore. After all they were replaced by the more stylish but less quirky Colnago-CSF kits a couple of years ago.
And how many people would have wanted CSF back in the day, when their claims to fame were wearing green and orange stripes and having Emanuele Sella as their team pin-up?
by UrlaubinPolen on Feb 4, 2012 10:05 AM EST up reply actions
I think it' a sort of hardpack forest trail, so possibly broken up and made cobbley by recent frost.

He looks more tired than usual today
Hope he’s in good form tomorrow – 2nd day AND cold, should suit him…
(dear Belgian weather gods, more snow please, but not where geert has to go, just on the CX!)

Nys
Cause of the thick gloves and by bumping into Tom I was sprinting on 39, and you can’t win a race like that (laughs). I want to be in second position behind Stybar, and I tried to sneak past Tom, and it was bumping and fighting. But it wasn’t unfair or anything, it was just racing. But I was in the wrong gear. The moment I wanted to switch gears, there was no bigger gear left. For a while I thought me teammate would win, but then he crashed.

Ha, I like that he laughs at himself!

Tom! Tom!
I wanted to corner in second position, but I didn’t really have a choice: either let Sven past or sprint from first position. So I picked the second option. This is the first ice race and BAM I’ve got a win. When there’s snow, you can hear the people call me… Their expectations are raised. Ice man, I hope I can keep that name. I hope the winter lasts, theses kind of races are the best. In the woods I was fighting with Sven a bit, but you know, Sven has already won 780 races, I’ve only won one, so this was a bit more important for me than it was for him. But I’ve already apologised and he doesn’t have any hard feelings.

"I hope this winter lasts"
Oh, poor Tom, there are only a few more races left! (and I was wondering, 780 – typo, joke, or real number? Would believe anything of Sven!)

Stybs
I was surprised, cause after three laps I thought ‘no way is this going to happen’. But it was ok. Radomir has been in good shape for a while now, so it’s no surprise he was good.
I missed a bit of his interview cause Tom Meeusen talks too much.
Coffee cures all. ~ Gav
K-Pow
I’m still in the lead. I’m fairly at ease now. I was thinking about the lead but Simunek crashed in front of me* and I lost too much energy coming back. I wasn’t positioned ideally for the sprint, so I’m happy with third.
*oh Kevin, NEVER race behind Simunek
Coffee cures all. ~ Gav
Unless you’re Zdenek Stybar at the Worlds, then you have no choice, Radomir’s just better than you.
