So

There’s snow, and this is the penultimate GVA race. Pauwels is leading the GVA trophy. Of course he is.

Lots of people together now.
Albert has forgotten how to start well again.
Frozen ground means very fast race. Not too much slippery.

Hello!

It’s snowing here too (it’s not meant to, really, this time of year, not as south & near the sea as we are)

I like the winter sunlight on snow

(mutter mutter too late in the season, mutter mutter!)

What was with DVT, actually being visible in a race, gasp!

Yes, there’s a race tomorrow too. Don’t let me catch you all slacking off again!

GS, Vik wants to know

Can Nys win the GVA, or is it definitely Pauwels’?

by Sarah Connolly on Feb 4, 2012 9:43 AM EST reply actions

Pauwels

And maybe Stybs, who’s 16 points behind with two races to go.

Tomorrow is the final Superprestige race, Nys wants that one (his eleventh Superprestige it would be!)

Also, hi Vik!

Jenever isn't gin?

I hate the gnomes.

It's a special belgian and dutch kind of gin

which has lots and lots of flavoured varieties

Coffee cures all. ~ Gav

by tgsgirl on Feb 4, 2012 9:49 AM EST up reply actions

It's *like* gin

but with a million flavours – cactus flavour = bright green, or a creamy version. Hazlenut creamy jenever is like Bailey’s, but nicer, and is a great addition to coffee

Aka Pigeons!

by Sarah Connolly on Feb 4, 2012 9:50 AM EST up reply actions

Thank you both.

Wonder how cactus flavoring made it to the Low Countries?

I'm a little skeptical.

Not a huge fan of flavored drinks, but next time I’m over there I’d be happy to test a couple.

Luxembourg is very close to Belgium--Frank Schleck

by majope on Feb 4, 2012 9:59 AM EST up reply actions

I’m not a big fan of flavoured drinks either (my favourite drop being whisky), but for some of the jenever varieties I can make an exception.

by UrlaubinPolen on Feb 4, 2012 10:01 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, sweet drinks are sort of the province of the kids over here.

But I’m curious enough to try a couple. Which do you think are the exceptions?

Luxembourg is very close to Belgium--Frank Schleck

by majope on Feb 4, 2012 10:06 AM EST up reply actions

The vanilla one is superb. It is a bit sickly and province of the kids, but there can be no denying that it is nice. The lemon one on the other hand was rather disappointing – I normally go wild for anything lemon flavoured.

The hazelnut one is basically Baileys.

by UrlaubinPolen on Feb 4, 2012 10:10 AM EST up reply actions

Cool, thanks.

Hey, I wonder if it’s possible to get jenever by post??

Hmmm, these on amazon look a bit posher than what was being sold at the race!

by Sarah Connolly on Feb 4, 2012 10:14 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, but whatever is sold at the race is race experience.

Absolutely vital.

I miss Metz

Much as I like schnapps (slivovitz is better still, but you rarely find it round these parts), you can’t drink spirits every day. Metz was a tasty light alternative – and it had one of the best TV adverts ever shown in the UK: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TUOPeNJCK8

Thanks! What's happening in the SuperPrestige?

Can Nys end the season with a series title to go with his big bag of race wins & Belgian stripes? And if he doesn’t, is that the first season ever without a series win?

Aka Pigeons!

by Sarah Connolly on Feb 4, 2012 9:47 AM EST up reply actions

Nys is 5 points ahead of K-Pow

which is quite the big gap, cause it’s 15 points for the winner, 14 for second, 13 for third etcetera.

And no, he didn’t win a single series in 2000-2001, and only won seven races then. Shockface.

You know the stupid visible from space CSF-Navigare-style jerseys make sense :p

You won’t miss them from the helicopter in the road season at least. Maybe in ‘cross it looks a bit foolish but it’s common sense on the road.

by UrlaubinPolen on Feb 4, 2012 10:01 AM EST up reply actions

Tragically, no. There were Androni Giocattoli and Aussie national champion jerseys but not Landbouwkrediet. How messed up is that?

Haha, most places dont’ sell CSF Navigare anymore. After all they were replaced by the more stylish but less quirky Colnago-CSF kits a couple of years ago.

And how many people would have wanted CSF back in the day, when their claims to fame were wearing green and orange stripes and having Emanuele Sella as their team pin-up?

Nys

Cause of the thick gloves and by bumping into Tom I was sprinting on 39, and you can’t win a race like that (laughs). I want to be in second position behind Stybar, and I tried to sneak past Tom, and it was bumping and fighting. But it wasn’t unfair or anything, it was just racing. But I was in the wrong gear. The moment I wanted to switch gears, there was no bigger gear left. For a while I thought me teammate would win, but then he crashed.

by tgsgirl on Feb 4, 2012 10:10 AM EST reply actions

Tom! Tom!

I wanted to corner in second position, but I didn’t really have a choice: either let Sven past or sprint from first position. So I picked the second option. This is the first ice race and BAM I’ve got a win. When there’s snow, you can hear the people call me… Their expectations are raised. Ice man, I hope I can keep that name. I hope the winter lasts, theses kind of races are the best. In the woods I was fighting with Sven a bit, but you know, Sven has already won 780 races, I’ve only won one, so this was a bit more important for me than it was for him. But I’ve already apologised and he doesn’t have any hard feelings.
