[Techs Mechs] Darn Tough Socks: Hammer in Style
The only perk of having a husband who is almost as married to his blog as he is to me is that occasionally I get some stuff. Usually it’s leftover Podium Café gear that you all didn’t buy. But last December he tossed me three pairs of Darn Tough socks with instructions to write a review for the site. No problem. Here in the northwest, socks are the it accessory this year and I’m always happy to have more pairs. According to this New York Times article, socks are big in Silicon Valley too.
If you look on the Darn Tough website, there are socks for people who ski, hike, bike, run, hunt, and fish. There are kid socks and life style socks, which I guess means you wear them when you are not doing any of the above. There are even "field tested, combat proven" socks, which apparently have been worn by members of the military during missions.
I received two life style pairs and one run/bike pair, all in attractive colors and patterns including orange and yellow stripes and blue and grey squiggles. The first thing I noticed about these socks is that they keep my feet warm. We live in Seattle, where the cold, wet weather leaves me with chilly hands and feet in the winter. I appreciate a sock that takes the edge off my partially numb toes.
The life style socks are made out of a combination of high quality materials: Merino wool, nylon, and LYCRA. For some mysterious reason, the socks contain these materials in slightly different ratios. The orange striped socks have 65 percent Merino wool, 33 percent nylon, and 2 percent LYCRA, while the blue and grey squiggle socks have 67 percent Merino, 31 percent nylon, and two percent LYCRA. The difference was lost on me.
The run/bike socks shown here are made out of other materials including Coolmax polyester, which is a high-tech fabric that according to the manufacturers’ website, could really give a boost to your life. "Besides its technical performance, Coolmax improves your comfort and therefore influences your well-being and your state of mind," the site says. "With Coolmax you feel fresher, more focused, ready to tackle the next challenge."
I can’t say for sure that the socks improved my state of mind, but the run probably did and I enjoyed wearing the Darn Tough socks while I was out there. I experienced no blisters, even on long runs, and my feet stayed warm enough without getting over-heated.
One notable feature of all of the Darn Tough socks is the tight stitching. The company, which is based in Vermont, explains their "high density knitting" technique: "More knit stitches per inch equates to durability and cushioning without bulk." I would agree with this. For a sock that keeps my feet warm, they are surprisingly thin.
These socks are a bit pricey. A quick search at online retailers that carry them, including REI and Campmoor, show they cost between $15-$20 per pair. The company does offer a lifetime guarantee for a full refund or another pair if you are not satisfied with the comfort or durability. I think you will be. And thanks for the schwag.

Do they happen to dry out quickly if they get wet?
A friend wants to know.
I'm not mean, I'm just drawn that way.
Not sure
I didn’t get them wet. I looked on their website and didn’t see any mention of quick-drying action.
Kinda sorta
I have a thinner pair that dry pretty quickly, and a thicker pair which take a tad more time. They don’t stay sopping and rotting like some older stuff but I dunno if that’s the same as “quick dry”.
Doesn’t everything in Australia dry out in about 45 seconds?

depends if you live in Melbourne
or worse, Tasmania
And oddly enough
this year in Sydney summer has borne a remarkable resemblance to a Seattle summer. We’ve had one day over 30 so far. Rain more days than not.
I saw the sun on Sunday. It was kind of weird.

Thanks for the review. Did you try the cushioned or ultra light run/bike socks?
Looking at their website, it also seems that they have differing proportions of Coolmax depending on color, so which color did you have?
Always happy to support Vermont businesses!

I just got two pairs of the cushioned run/bike socks the other day (in the bargain bin at Sam's in Brattleboro, VT)...
I haven’t used them yet, but mostly wanted to say that I got them for $9 a pair and stick my tongue out. :P
The cushion is not an all over thickness like a tube sock - it’s thick where it counts (pressure points).
I will wear cushioned socks on the bike (if they fit under my shoes, that is)
but I only like really thin Coolmax or Ultimax socks for running.

just realized my calf length sock is mesh, not cushioned ---> JJY fail
still think it will work well.
lots of new sock companies these days it seems
i hear a lot of talk about swiftwicks lately. we must be in the middle of a sock technology boom. the lifetime warranty thing is pretty cool. might have to get me a pair.

Stace, I was just raving about the Darn Tough cycling socks
that my folks gave me as a xmas gift. They are warmer than the Smartwool and DeFeet Woolie Boolies (my former favorite cold weather cycling sock) that I also wear. I have done some crazy cold MTB rides (and my MTB shoes are not winter shoes, in fact they are mostly mesh) And my feet stayed dry and warm even in 14 deg F temps. I am yet to wear booties this winter on the road or in the woods.

That's good to hear
I’m not the only one who found they kept my feet warm.
p.s. Hi Pete!
what's the thread count?
I will put nothing less than 650 on my feet, because I am a princess type.

Did you put that pea under my mattress?

And is it me, or are smartwools sorta overrated?

Smartwool heels
have always worn out on me. Maybe they’re fixing that.

Take your spurs before putting on your socks
Problem solved.

There are 2 kinds of spurs my friend.
Those that go on OVER your socks…and those that come in by the window.
If you're going to shoot, shoot. Don't put on socks.

yeah, same with mine.
The wear out in the heels and the balls of my feet. Expensive socks, not terribly warm or durable.

These are a few of my favorite things...
putting on a brand new pair of nice socks. I love getting lots of new socks for Christmas, I just got some Keen socks which were ok. But last year I got a pair of what are by far my favorite brand of socks right now, FITS, check them out even if you’re not as passionate about socks as I am.
