I have wine! And takeout!
My kitchen has NOTHING in it except for a few pipes sticking out of the wall! Plastered walls though, a step forward from the last few months…. Maybe we get a kitchen this week – dear Cafésters, please cross fingers for me that it’ll all come together…

Has anyone ever had a Mexican quince liqueur called Membrillo?
Way back in the ‘80s, it wasn’t imported—had to bring it over the border yourself. I’ve never seen it here, but then again, I haven’t really looked. For some reason, the talk of cactus jenever made me think of it (cactus, Mexico—my mind loves a good cliche).

"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Yes, as it happens
But I was being deliberately harsh just as an excuse to bust out that video clip.
Cat Stevens always seemed a bit bloody wet to me, but I his music didn’t make me upset or anything. Ferry had a bit more pizzazz, of course.
I thought you’d have been a Sunnyboys fan.
I was 15 when I saw 'The Cat' and he made me swoon.
But I’m a huge, huge fan of acoustic music, so Bryan Ferry always lagged behind Jackson Browne, Joan Armatrading etc.

Anyway, “man, that is some boring shit” is the truth.
lots of commercial
like any good american sport. but also a lot of setting up the next play. it’s a very tactical game, almost chess-like. once you learn a little more about the rules (and there are millions of them it seems) even the ‘non-play’ time can be interesting.

I don’t think “soccer” had made it to the mid-south yet, and bikes meant BMX. Some weird guy I knew went on and on about Greg Lemond, but I had no idea what was with that.

There are pretty extensive weak spots on the 220 km course, near the sea in south-west Friesland (a northern province where the 11-cities tour is held). It needs one more week of severe frost, I think, but not all days in the coming week are predicted to be that cold.

That is very Breughelian
Also, it reminds me one of my favourite poems. This thread is anything goes, right?
Musee des Beaux Arts
About suffering they were never wrong,
The Old Masters: how well they understood
Its human position; how it takes place
While someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully
along;
How, when the aged are reverently, passionately waiting
For the miraculous birth, there always must be
Children who did not specially want it to happen, skating
On a pond at the edge of the wood:
They never forgot
That even the dreadful martyrdom must run its course
Anyhow in a corner, some untidy spot
Where the dogs go on with their doggy life and the torturer’s horse
Scratches its innocent behind on a tree.
In Breughel’s Icarus, for instance: how everything turns away
Quite leisurely from the disaster; the plowman may
Have heard the splash, the forsaken cry,
But for him it was not an important failure; the sun shone
As it had to on the white legs disappearing into the green
Water; and the expensive delicate ship that must have seen
Something amazing, a boy falling out of the sky,
Had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on.
— W H Auden

According to Brueghel
when Icarus fell
it was spring
a farmer was ploughing
his field
the whole pageantry
of the year was
awake tingling
with itself
sweating in the sun
that melted
the wings’ wax
unsignificantly
off the coast
there was
a splash quite unnoticed
this was
Icarus drowning

Indoor Trainer entertainment
What’s everyone wasting their time with on the trainer? I never watched Lost first time around, but just started watching Season One. Flew through the first three episodes yesterday and loved it. Next in queue is either Breaking Bad or Sherlock. Any other TV series suggestions?
PopUp – we need your orange asterisk thingy back.
+1
I’m watching season 45 of Sons of anarchy now, I like to save the really good ones (Treme, Mad Men, The Wire,…) for the tv.
Really
I need some convincing. I made myself watch the first 5 episodes waiting for it to get good, but it didn’t. What am I missing?
After giving it up, I started watching Lost, which has been pretty entertaining.
"I’m pretty disappointed, but if this is what people want to see, a race decided on a downhill," Andy Schleck said. "I don’t think that. A finish like this should not be allowed."
I didn't really like Season 1 either,
but it gets much better after that. Seasons 3 and 4 are really good
yeah, it grows on you
The character development is cool with the show. I think I was also convinced that I liked the show more and more after hearing a few interviews of the actors discussing how the initial thought was to kill off certain characters (I don’t want to give away too much) and then they decided to make them a bigger part of the story. Kinda fun to know in later seasons that the initial storyline was intended to be different…
Plus the storyline gets darker, which works better and the cinematography gets a lot better too
(those beautiful skies!)
Lost season 1 is awesome
Unfortunately it stops being awesome in season 2. The BBC Sherlock is brilliant. Did you ever watch Alias first time around?

I'm ...euh.... 'buying' "Lights out" and "hell on wheels" right now
Has anyone seen these? Any good?
I really liked Hell on Wheels ...
AMC is making some good quality shows and I think this is one of them. Wouldn’t say it’s as good as a Breaking Bad, but it’s good quality, like the actors, and the storyline is interesting.
I was lucky to be able to stream it for free (well, through my cable subscription) or watch on tv.
Was a bit disappointed in Hell on Wheels
but perhaps it was because of the hype of certain elements around here with entirely too much man-love for Eric Zabel.

Isn't it an absolutely gorgeous photo? It does however prove that Vino is certifiable.

LOL. For sure these days. Seriously swimming in that with snow all around. Only Vino or Jens! would escape hypothermia.

Depends
how quickly you get out. Well, and the air temp. But the first couple minutes after you feel no cold whatsoever.

a bit of cold water is less than nothing compared to what the lowliest pro rider endures, to say nothing of Vino. And I’m not really a fan.

I have a feeling that Twitter will not be his forte, but I'm happy to be proved wrong.
Greipel for instance is rather good at it, and I hadn’t expected that.

What is today's topic for happy hour?
I am having a case of the Tuesdays and really don’t want to work.
Have you seen the Nordhaug video I posted a few minutes ago?
It’s up near the top somewhere…search his name if you can’t find it.

Not sure what the Honesty Tour is
but as it features cyclists dancing in their undies, it obviously needs more coverage here at PdC.

The greatest 240 second workout ever invented
All I've had today is, like, six gummy bears and some scotch.
bah, I was going to type: 'Funny coincidence,I was listening to the man when I read this

Increasing your short term power, and ability to buffer lactate
Invented by a Japanese speed skating coach. If you’re doing it on a trainer (really the best place for this one), warm up adequately and then do 8 sets of the following:
20 seconds as hard as you can possibly go – envision yourself sprinting against Cav.
Recover for 10 seconds
Lather, rinse, repeat, throw up, get dizzy, curse god, 7 more times. Cool down and you’re done.
All I've had today is, like, six gummy bears and some scotch.
Nuyens had to have a mental coach to get past his fear of throwing up during an effort
and he said it broke new ground in his training in terms of intervals and digging deeper
There is an American MTBer and ’crosser Todd Wells who says that your going hard enough during intervals unless you vomit
So that’s cycling…
