Giro Stage Predictor: Stage 10

Tuesday 15th May

Civitavecchia - Assisi 186 km

Steve's preview at Steephill:

From Civitavecchia, this 187 km stage will head northeast past Viterbo and Terni on smooth, wide but lumpy roads. Although there are no GPMs along the way other than the cat 4 climb at the finish, it is expected to be a lively stage. The finishing climb to the town centre in Assisi (Umbria region) is typical of the finishes at theTirreno-Adriatico race. The last 5 km are tricky with narrow and steep sections including the San Damiano "Wall", a 1.5 km @ 11.2% climb with a maximum of 15%. From there, the race follows a 1 km slight descent then enters the old town center for the final uphill km on a stone-paved road via a narrow passage.

Stage 8 Results

Ventoso, Felline, Nizzolo.

A mostly well designed stage that was finely poised between sprinters and attackers... until a ridiculous final bend eliminated even the well positioned Cav and Gossie. Still, no question that Ventoso was also superbly positioned and would have been in the mix even without the chaos.

Two emerging young stars Felline and Nizzolo filled out the podium, but neither were picked. So with Ventoso, our joint stage winners were thebongolian, pablo777, broerie and PrinceBuster. A nice 10 points each, and pablo777 moves into second place, within striking distance of cappello rosa VirtKitty. Can pablo777 translate his well documented strava KOM pedigree into yet more inspired picks in the hills and save holmovka some postage stamps?

For each stage, pick three riders. The order of your picks does not matter.

The first three riders on the stage score. The basic score is stage winner 4 points, second place 2 points, third 1 point.

In addition there are bonus points awarded. Stage winner bonus is 24 points, second place bonus 12 points, third place bonus 6 points. The bonus points are split equally among all the DS's who picked that rider.

The entry deadline is the official start time of the stage. Now, people may want to be sneaky and change their picks before the stage starts when they see what other people's picks look like. That's fine, it's a normal part of the game and quite acceptable - but we'll allow strictly one change. You can change all three riders if you want, but it has to be in one new post. If you want to make a change, post it as a reply to your original post.

If you miss making an entry for a stage, no problem, you're still in the competition - you just score zero for that stage. Also, there's no limit to how early you can make picks, so if you're going on vacation, feel free to enter ahead of time for as many stages as you want.
