Long time lurker seeking opinions on an incident i was involved in.
I was just getting going on my ride, only a few miles in when someone in a car coming toward me from the opposite direction threw a full beer bottle out the window which struck me in the air on my left arm, bounced off my chest and settled in someone's front yard. I never saw it coming, only heard some yelling and then felt the impact. Soaked me thouroughly, opened a cut and a large welt started forming immediately.
Like the rest of you, i'm sure, i've had plenty of instances of people yelling at me, driving close to scare me, etc, and my response is usually not to look back, show no reaction at all and just keep on keeping on. That was my initial reaction here as well, unfortunately, as by the time i thought to look back and get a description of the car, or license plate number, the car was too far away to discern anything.
I stewed over it for awhile as i rode on and as i was approaching the local police station decided to stop in and let them know what had happened. They treated my arm, which thankfully is not seriously harmed, and got my contact information. Now i don't really expect anything to come of it but i was mildy surprised at the Police's response. After telling them where it happened a cruiser went out to look for the bottle. I live in a small town and i'm not expecting a CSI type investigation but as i rode back out to the scene i was surprised to learn they had recovered the bottle and wouldn't you know, the bottle, unbroken, was covered in fingerprints. The Police believe that the County level Bureau of Criminal Investigation will be able to lift a print and believe that a joker like this, who would do such an act, is likely in the system.
So now i'm thinking that i may have bitten off more than i'm willing to chew. If they can identify this clown from the prints, the police say that a summons for him is likely and that i'll be called as a witness. As i can't identify the car or individual it seems unlikely that anything will come of it excepts perhaps me incurring additional wrath from this guy.
So, what do you guys think. Was reporting the incident to the police the right thing to do? I think probably it was. I welcome your opinions and maybe i'm just looking for someone to commiserate with. I won't stop riding over something like this. Hell no.
