UPDATE! Words from Vos on this below!
Vos has been famous for riding one of the most intense schedules, competing at the very highest levels in road and cyclocross, with forays into track and this year, in mountain bike. She was always planning a reduced road season after her 2012 aims of winning the Olympic road race in London, and the World Championships on home soil in Valkenburg - she's been talking about wanting to try some MTB for years, and 2013 seemed the perfect year for that. But even so, she's been struggling with the pain all year, and talked about how grateful she was for the team support to help her get to her goal of winning the Road World Championships.
She had already talked about taking a break from cyclocross this year, and had been planning to race the Caubergcross World Cup next weekend in Valkenburg, and then the Nacht van Woerden two days later, and then take a break before preparing for the World Championships in Hoogerheide in the new year.
But with the back surgery, that could be in doubt.
It's been a testament to her clever race programme and to her mental fortitude that has meant that even with back issues, she's had a great year for results, winning the Road World Cup and retaining her Road World Championships title. I can only wish her all the best for a successful surgery, and an end to her back problems.
UPDATE! Here's what Vos has to say about it herself
.@_pigeons_ The story is made bigger than it is... My back is getting better & the minor surgery was planned in my off-season. No worries!— Marianne Vos (@marianne_vos) October 14, 2013
Sounds like it's not as much of a story as it sounds - but in any case, hope it's all smooth and simple and she's back kicking ass in time for the CX Worlds!
