At the end of every season, several organisations award trophies to to 'best' riders of the year. Belgium has a few of these trophies too. There's the 'Kristallen fiets', awarded by the newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws, and the 'Flandrien of the year', by the rival newspaper Het Nieuwsblad (Sportwereld).
2013 wasn't a good year for the belgian riders, but the jury had to choose five nominees. The pro riders themselves (more than 100) will now vote to decide who wins.
The nominees are
Jan Bakelants: won a stage in the TdF and wore the yelow jersey for two days. He also finished 3rd in the Tour du Luxemburg and won the GP de la Wallonie.
Philippe Gilbert: wore a stripey jersey for 12 months, won a stage in the Vuelta. Oher results: 2nd in the Brabantse Pijl, 5th in the Amstel Gold Race, 7th in Luik-Bastenaken-Luik, 3rd in the Ronde van België GC.
Gianni Meersman: won two stages in Catalunya, two stages in Romandie, Tour de l'Ain prologue and won the points jersey in the Dauphiné,
Sven Nys: became world champion at the age of 36, won 19 CX races and won the Superprestige overall classification.
Greg Van Avermaet: won a stage and the GC in the Tour de Wallonie, won a stage in Utah, 3rd in Gent-Wevelgem, 4th in Roubaix, 7th in the Ronde van Vlaanderen.
