Things just got interesting in Aigle: Brian Cookson (president of British Cycling) has announced he's standing for the UCI presidency against Pat McQuaid. See here: http://road.cc/content/news/84827-updated-british-cyclings-brian-cookson-run-against-pat-mcquaid-uci-presidency
Presumably he's done some canvasing before taking this decision so must be confident he has a chance. Not least because this must be an all or nothing attempt - if he fails it's hard to see McQuaid and his team working with Cookson who sits on the UCI board and leads a number of committees.
Would he be a better UCI president than McQuaid? It's tempting to say anyone would be but Cookson can at least point to the renaissance of British Cycling for his credentials as a sports administrator. That said there will still be some questions for those who care about cycling besides track and men's road cycling where the British record is weaker.
Anyhow, this could get fun. Breakout the popcorn.
