Vuelta Stage 13: First big win for Barguil

It was a day for the breakaway and it was a day for young super-talent Warren Barguil on Argos-Shimano. The young neopro outfoxed his older and more experienced companions in a very strong breakaway. Just as one group of attackers were caught in the finale games between the breakaways Barguil took a flyer and guys like Mollema and Nocentini wasted just enough time looking at each other for someone else to do the chasing. That hesitation was enough for the youngster to build enough of a gap and he used his strong climbing to power up the incline in the last few hundred meters to grab his first pro win and what a win it was.

The stage started very hard with no break being allowed to go for a very long time, it took more than half the stage for a group to wrestle free of the peloton. And when it went it was a high calibre break with names like Intxausti, Scarponi, Santaromita, Mollema, Nocentini, Coppel, Txurruka and the day's winner Barguil. The day also took it's toll in the form of crashes and abandonments. Pablo Lastras of Movistar crashed badly with broken ribs, clavicle, and shoulder blade as a result. Laurens Ten Dam, David de la Cruz, Stef Clement and Laurent Mangel all abandoned the race while Sebastian Lander and Vicente Reynes did not start this morning. This comes already before the brutal weekend that lies ahead for the riders in the Pyrenees.
