The 2014 Tour of Alberta stage details have been announced. VN has a nice summary here. They have reversed the direction, travelling from Calgary to Edmonton (last year was the reverse). Overall the course looks fairly well balanced and should make for great racing (but the racers make the race yada yada...)
Following on the heels of the Tour of Utah and Tour of Colorado (I DON'T CARE WHAT THEY WANT ME TO CALL IT!) and just before the ProTour races in Quebec and Montreal, this race has the potential to keep getting better.
Prologue: If you ignore the scale, it appears they are scaling Mt Ventoux...but this is a 4km effort. Rises over 100m in the last 1.3km with 6 switchbacks. The course appears to travel beside the bobsled track in the Olympic Park
Stage 1: Circuit race in Lethbridge containing 15% grades
Stage 2: Different start town..same finishing circuit in Red Deer as last year.
Stage 3: Apparently straightforward stage may be complicated by crosswinds....and it finishes on an airstrip which is cool.
Stage 4: According to the course map this stage includes sections of both dirt road (3 sections) and "Canadian Pave" (6 sections). I lived in Canada for 98% of my life and I have never heard of the phrase "Canadian Pave", so your guess is as good as mine. These sections appear to be in the later half of the course so they could prove decisive.
Stage 5: Final circuit in Edmonton features 11 laps of 11km. Each lap will include a punchy climb or two to keep things interesting.
