Breaking: Valverde, Basso Both Linked to Fuentes?

Alejandro Valverde may be Cycling's next major star to fall into the pit of Operacion Puerto suspicion. Via CN, as the Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport delves deeper into Ivan Basso's case, they are claiming to have uncovered evidence that both Basso and Valverde were among the sources of the 99 blood bags found with Fuentes, and in Valverde's case traces of EPO were found. In Basso's case, no trace of EPO was discovered, but transfusions of blood are themselves a violation of the sport's rules.

Obviously Valverde has been suggested before as someone of interest to the investigation, based on the cryptic mention of Valv:Piti in Fuentes' notes, corresponding to Valverde and his dog. Whether La Gazzetta's efforts convert Valverde from a guy with a cloud over him to a full-on OP persona non-grata remains to be seen. But this week, expect the issue to progress rapidly and for ASO to start putting pressure on Caisse d'Epargne to keep Valverde out of the Tour. This is huge.

Update [2007-5-7 9:30:52 by chris]: After sleeping on it, it occurs to me that this all shows how horribly stupid ASO are. To repeat one of my winter rants, you can't use "under suspicion" as a legal standard. Due process exists because there isn't any workable alternative. So now a newspaper has placed Valverde (back) under suspicion. Is he out? What if the Podium Cafe says we don't like the looks of that Pereiro guy... is he out? Or does Dick Pound have to pronounce you guilty in an interview first?

In America and presumably a few other civilized nations, if they can't get nine or so people locked in a secret room to agree you should be hauled into court, then they have to leave you alone. For any sort of skilled prosecutor armed with a modicum of evidence, that's not a lot of process... but at least it's something we can get our minds around. At the Tour, "under suspicion" is going to be whatever Christian Prudhomme says it is, and it's a short, slippery ride from a newspaper investigation to "let's throw out all the furriners". But then, as Les Woodland reports in CN, being an asshole has long been part of Le Tour's director's job description.

Not much news
The link still just the not so coded codename. You had to expect this sort of thing to pop up in Italy. The shining hero of the tifosi has been torpedoed by leeks in the spanish media while spains favourite son has been kept conspicuosly at armslength from any real involvement. Got to figure that there will be forces in Italy looking to right this "unbalance".

Already knew all of this
Valv. Piti. was in there, they just ignored it...

Aargh, I took him at face value
All that Valverde arrogance about how he didn't dope. And I put him on my VDS team. If this plays out, I'm screwed for the Tour.

welcome to the club
I've got Basso.  How long will the other AV stay out of this...?

I wish I were as slim as Vino's chances
of starting the TdF this season.

It really will be interesting to see how the ASO/UCI, etc... work this all out. I hope Moreau is putting some extra training miles in right now.

Bah
Moreau won't need the extra miles to beat out Chavanel and Voeckler. It's in the bag.

Unless Dessel can win the Prologue
then the interteam rivalry can start.

Each of the French riders will have a personal motorbike, and at least two helicopters to cover them suffering nobly on the climbs.

I recommend professional tooth whitening, buying very heavy gold chains, and using mascara on the chest hair (unless it rains) to get the most out of the camera time.

Joke of the day
Q:  What do the French call professional cyclers who dope?

A:  The Peloton

The Fighting Cocks: will not torment the emotionally frail. All others fair game.

OH, and BTW
this is our one doping thread of the day, unless another big shoe drops. I've got several things planned that are way more fun.

This gets tiring
Newspapers recycling old unsubstantiated rumors and allegations.  Wake me when Valverde is called before his governing body.

A point of order
disagreement does not equal disrespect.

I did not concur with your analysis that civil rights had been abridged, I fully agree that riders have civil rights.

Civil Discourse
I do not recall seeing the incident you referred to so I cannot speak to it.  I do think the civil exchange of view points on this blog is as good as you will get.  If you encountered a problem, my experience leads me to believe it was an aberration.

Far be it from me to stop you bashing the french
but what the heck as ASO got to do with the current mess that Valv is in (at this point)? An italian paper leaked the info which has been around for months - did they leak to lessen the pressure on their star rider? why are still no other (non-cycling) athletes named?

I am far more angry and disgusted with the actions of the media and police in leaking only certain names that I am with the ASO or Dick Pound at this point. ASO is fighting to keep their Tour in business and granted they are taking a short-term view of it, but what else can they do? They cannot afford to have another winner turn off positive after the fact - the german media has already said that they won't pay for tv, and you can bet other media would start pulling out in droves if it happened again. It is all about money.

Uhh . Brandon and everyone .
from VN:

Italian cycling star Ivan Basso admitted to the anti-doping prosecutor of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) on Monday that he was involved in the Operación Puerto blood doping scandal.

Yay!!!
This is the first sensible thing related to OP that's happened so far. Go Ivan! I'm glad you admitted it!

I see nothing new
so far in Valverde's implication.

I mean, I fully believe that he is Valv. (piti) and number eighteen, but unlike Basso, who had phone taps directly linking him w/ Birrillo ("Birillo finished 17 seconds behind Simoni today") and unlike Sevilla who was filmed entering Fuentes' gynecology office when he swore he didn't, there isn't any actual evidence, i.e., documents, phone taps, film that connect Valverde to Valv. other than speculation.

I really hope they test his DNA against the samples, but I can understand why he isn't on the official list yet. I fully believe that the evidence exists, but in order to get a search warrant or subpoena information, you have to have knowledge of what you are looking for. Fishing expeditions are not kosher.

So my hope is that there are links to Valverde in the documents, or that all riders will be DNA tested against the Fuentes' blood. But if Valverde does escape the DNA net, it will be because his civil rights are being respected.

It is one thing to ask that actual evidence be ignored in the name of civil rights. I think that's desperate hooey on the part of defense teams. It is quite another to ignore due process because we know the evidence will be there if we bend the rules. That is bad police work.

Value added?
What I gathered from the excerpt, which is really third or fourth-hand, is that La Gazzetta is reading dossiers not previously known or maybe just not openly discussed, and connecting the Valverde dots. The significance is more sensational than, say, evidentiary in a Federal Rules of Evidence-sorta-way. So if you're looking for the beef, I agree it isn't there yet, AFAIK.

Oops
I suppose hooey isn't the most respectful term. I guess I don't respect lies in attempt to duck responsibility. I do respect civil liberties. My ACLU dues have slipped, but I acknowledge the importance of defending due process.

With that in mind, I want to highlight the difference between being suspended with pay and being officially banned. Cops that discharge their weapon are suspended with pay until the circumstances are investigated. Teachers are suspended with pay when facing allegations of improper action with students. It is a different thing than being officially sentenced by an authority.

Not being invited to participate in an event is [i]not equivelent to being found guilty. The cycling business is the advertising business, and if they offer reduced value to the sponsors, they are worth less to the business. It may be unfair, but it isn't illegal that fat (actually only moderately underweight) models can't find work. Actor lose gigs due to off-screen rumors. Riders who are under official investigation may be held out of competition.

Now, if rumors led to teams not paying riders (Unibet and Quesada, for example) THAT is unfair and unjust. If riders are banned or have their licenses revoked without due process, that would be unfair or unjust. But if a rider is under investigation (say they were wire-tapped buying EPO), then the races are within their rights to ask the investigation be closed before the riders return to competition.

In Basso, Ullrich, Sevilla and other's cases, there was legitimate evidence linking them with sports doping. Holding them out of the TdF was a legitmate act by the ASO. The ASO is not an anti-doping agency. They have no resources or authority there. They are a business that sells advertising, and they are allowed to take action that protects their bottom line.

This video is an attempt to show the ambience at the final hour of the Nice Ironman competition. A lame attempt i'll admit, but wth? If you're ever going to finish towards the end of an ironman, i suggest Nice as the place to do it. The applause and support and general ambience at the end is really remarkable. Dj's, pom-pom girls, people dancing, shouting, dance music blasting ... Some finishers just go on through, others raise their arms or just have a huge smile, one guy did some pushups while the dj counted for him, another did a cartwheel, some ran through with their little kids holding their hands. And this all 8 hours after the winners have finished.

When i went out my door to walk over to see the last hour or so of the Ironman, the first thing i saw was a guy across the street, pushing his triathlon bike, head hanging down to his chest, walking with a pronounced. Painful. Slow. Trudge. Medal around his neck. He'd done well. Hope he felt better the next day.

Then i got to the promenade and started seeing more of the people who'd finished: one guy asleep on the pavement with his wife by his side in all the raucous noise and confusion and crowds everywhere. Then the medical tent - massages, those heat blanket thingies, oxygen, people limping aorund, Oy!

Then every now and then you see a finisher with a medal around their neck who look fresh as a daisy, like they've just had a nice walk in the park.

Then finally you get to the finish line ... and that's the video. At the end there's a fireworks display (no one timed their finish to coincide with it this year) and then apparently a few hundred people stayed all night to party on the prom next to the beach until daybreak.

I could not do an ironman even if i wanted to, but i'll be there again next year to help welcome the last finishers in.
