Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

My photos from the Giro

Here's a link to my photos from this year's Giro:

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v421/Francophile/Giro/Giro%202007/?start=all

A couple of notes:

I posted a lot of pictures, because I wasn't sure what people would want to see.  If you don't want to look at all of them, you can double-click on any picture and start from there.

I have a lot of pictures from my ride up to Tre Cime di Lavaredo, but no shots of the race that day, because it was raining when the racers came by.

Awesome photo's
love the series with the AG2R wreck just before the finish. That was brutal and you were right there, some of the best shots of it I have seen.

Thanks!
That was the first crash I've ever seen in person, and it was quite shocking.  Luckily, both riders were able to continue, although the second guy looked pretty shaken up as he got back on the bike.

I don't know if you've seen any of the Versus coverage, but they had this crash down pat. The first AG2R rider came around the corner so fast both of his wheels lost contact with the pavement. The only way he could have overcooked that turn more is if he'd ridden in a straight line into the barriers.

I'm amazed that neither he nor his teammate were seriously hurt - it could have been terrible. Must have been a sight to see live :-)

I haven't had a chance yet
to go back and watch much of the Versus coverage.  I'd like to watch all the stages from when I was in Italy, since there were a lot of days when I saw only a bit of the race.

It would be interesting to see that crash footage.  It happened so fast, and just as the riders were coming into our sight, that even though several of us from my group were standing together, I was the only one who got any shots of it.

Lovely!
...as always ;-)

The sequence of Z after the time trial is brilliant.

I liked Gibo signing the little girl's tshirt, too, as she's looking around trying to watch him.  Great moment.

Thank you!!

Thanks, gavia
Of course, it's hard to take bad pictures at the Giro, with all that lovely Italian scenery around ;-)

The Dave Z pictures are probably my favorites.  He certainly looked as if he'd left everything on the battlefield.

Italian legs for all!
The Z photos are some of the best racing photos I've seen anywhere in a long time.  Really well done.

Sweet stuff
Just the fact that you can name all of those riders is amazing.

Well done, Tifosa
These were great photos - not just cool because they were on-the-scene photos, but photos that were actually well composed.

Did you find it harder to follow the race itself when you were there?

by Sui Juris on Jun 21, 2007 8:35 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It's usually very easy to follow the race in Italy
It's live on tv for at least a couple of hours every afternoon, and a lot of Italian bars have tvs, especially in the small towns.  There were just a few days, like on the Zoncolan, when I watched the race from a place where there was no access to a tv.  Luckily, on that day, I was far enough (7k) from the finish that after the last rider went by, I was able to hop on my bike and make it down to the town at the base of the climb just in time to see Gibo cross the finish line on the tv in an outdoor bar.

The daily sports paper, La Gazzetta, also has fantastic coverage of the Giro: pages and pages of stories, interviews, pictures, expert analysis (Cipollini's daily column, for example), and layouts of the stages.  I can read enough Italian to get the gist of the stories, and it really makes you realize you're in a place where people are passionate about cycling when you see ten pages a day of Giro coverage.

Thanks for the compliment about my pictures.  I don't really know anything about photography, but I've been kind of getting into the whole composition thing lately.  It's fun to think about what should be in the shot, where the focus will be, etc.

So fantastic! Mille grazie!
I have enjoyed your reports so much; they've been just one more incredible dimension added to an already-breathtaking Giro!  It must have been an magnificent vacation, such a grand adventure! Really, thank you so much.

It was magnificent, you're right
It's been very hard to get back to the workaday world after such a great trip.  Of course, the best cure for the post-trip letdown is to start planning your next trip.

It's been great to have such an appreciative audience for my stories and pictures.  You know how it is, you get home from vacation all excited, and its like pulling teeth to get anyone to look at your pictures.  Combine that with the fact that most of my friends and family don't follow cycling and can't fathom why I thought I needed 50 pictures of Gilberto Simoni, and its hopeless!

That bar looked awesome
Your description of that one was spot on. Was that on the Zoncolan? What a location... Wonderful shots all around. Thanks for sharing them. And your fellow cycling freaks here at the cafe will gladly watch the slide show. So tell the truth... how tempted were you to swipe one of the Tinkoff bikes?  Or at least hop on for a picture?

That bar was awesome!
I wouldn't have wanted to be outside during the thunderstorm that hit while I was having lunch in there.  It was on the climb to Tre Cime.  There were a couple of other tent/bars on the way up, but that one was the best.  On the Zoncolan, I saw one or two bars under awnings, but nothing in an enclosed tent.  Luckily, the weather wasn't bad that day, so I wasn't looking for shelter.

This video is an attempt to show the ambience at the final hour of the Nice Ironman competition. A lame attempt i'll admit, but wth? If you're ever going to finish towards the end of an ironman, i suggest Nice as the place to do it. The applause and support and general ambience at the end is really remarkable. Dj's, pom-pom girls, people dancing, shouting, dance music blasting ... Some finishers just go on through, others raise their arms or just have a huge smile, one guy did some pushups while the dj counted for him, another did a cartwheel, some ran through with their little kids holding their hands. And this all 8 hours after the winners have finished.

When i went out my door to walk over to see the last hour or so of the Ironman, the first thing i saw was a guy across the street, pushing his triathlon bike, head hanging down to his chest, walking with a pronounced. Painful. Slow. Trudge. Medal around his neck. He'd done well. Hope he felt better the next day.

Then i got to the promenade and started seeing more of the people who'd finished: one guy asleep on the pavement with his wife by his side in all the raucous noise and confusion and crowds everywhere. Then the medical tent - massages, those heat blanket thingies, oxygen, people limping aorund, Oy!

Then every now and then you see a finisher with a medal around their neck who look fresh as a daisy, like they've just had a nice walk in the park.

Then finally you get to the finish line ... and that's the video. At the end there's a fireworks display (no one timed their finish to coincide with it this year) and then apparently a few hundred people stayed all night to party on the prom next to the beach until daybreak.

I could not do an ironman even if i wanted to, but i'll be there again next year to help welcome the last finishers in.
