Green Jersey Power Poll!

And then there were three. This is more of a rant than a rating. W/o further ado...

1. Tom Boonen ↔

Still the odds-on favorite to win, but Boonen got schooled today. Astana & co. handed him the ultimate gift, splitting the peloton behind him and leaving almost all the sprinters, including his closest competition, helplessly gasping for air. Hunter was there, but with no break up the road, Boonen was a mortal lock for top three, and a heavy favorite for a win. Either way, he was about to run away from his maillot vert competitors and hide.

If you didn't see it, he got caught behind a last km spill and slowed just enough to miss the sprint, coming in 37th while Hunter won and jumped into second place. Boonen is now worse off than when the day started. This is an appalling error on his part, being so far back in a winding finish, when crashes are more than just foreseeable. His job is to race from the front.

There are three possible explanations why he was so far back. The first two are that he got boxed in or that he wasn't paying attention -- two pretty unflattering assessments. The third, and my bet, is that he wanted to time his move to the last second so he could win. This is a rookie mistake, one Zabel would never make. Stage wins aren't his job! Assuring max points is, meaning getting as close to victory without putting yourself in spots where you risk missing the sprint. Update [2007-7-19 14:14:5 by chris]: Hunter thought Boonen hit the corner too fast and had to brake. That's not especially cool either.

Tomorrow there's a cat-2 climb 55km from the finish, which means he's in danger of Zabel leaving him behind. If he keeps this up, he could wind up third on points by the time we get to Paris. Foolish. Oh, and those five points he let Steegmans take from him don't look so smart either, do they?

2. Robbie Hunter ↑

Last time I said I expected to have a down arrow next to Hunter here. Like I've often said, people just assume that since I run this site I actually know something about Cycling. There's not much of a case to make that Hunter can outsprint Boonen; he just did outsprint Fabian Cancellara today. But Hunter deserved a stage someplace, and has ridden the smartest Green Jersey quest among the group. Just look at today: he could have been caught out when Astana split the pack, or from the sprint pileup, but nope. He raced from the front, and as icing on the cake, there were no other real sprinters to come past him, so he got the stage too. He's been in position every day. That is how you win the Points Competition.

3. Erik Zabel ↓

Hm, he's been riding smartly to make up for his lack of closing speed, but missing the split today was bad. Only luck saved his place in the competition. His last chance to move up comes tomorrow, on a course that just might put Boonen into difficulty. After that, he has to count on Boonen not learning any lessons (unlikely) and on Hunter to slip up as well.

4-10. Thor Hushovd , Sébastien Chavanel,  Robert Förster, etc. ↔

Hushovd is fourth, 50 points behind Boonen. These guys are all just hunting for stage wins now.

I can't remember where I saw a recent interview
with Tom, be it VS, Velo, WorldCycling, but he seemed a bit nonchalant when asked about how he would approach these last few flat stages. I don't know if it was overconfidence, or lack of confidence due to fatigue, or just his normal "cool" outlook on life, but I can't help but wonder if this lack of urgency might not have been his Achilles heel today.

I'm doing the Tomeke dance!!!
How to redeem a sprinter after a tactical mistake/bad luck stage:

a: Make it over the cat 2 climb
b: Chase back the break
c: Get a textbook leadout from your boys
d: Show the competition your back tire

The race for green is still very close and any of the top 3 have a shot. BUT there are only two real sprinters stages left and Tomeke has 2 stage wins already so QSI will be letting the breaks go. It will be up to Barloworld, Milram, C.A., and FdJ to chase back the breaks and the breaks will be full of teams desperate for a stage win.

Also, Tom cannot lose his lead if he finishes in the top 10. He still is vulnerable if Zabel or Hunter wins and he missed the break, but as long as he contests the sprints he lead is big enough to survive more bad days.

Like I said, I'm doing the Tomeke dance because today's stage drove a stake into the hearts of Zabel and Hunter. There was hope, they had an opportunity, but then they had to face the reality that they don't have the legs to get around Boonen. The Green shirt is Boonen's to lose, and while he's still got plenty of opportunity to do exactly that, I'm doing the Tomeke dance!

Agreed
He needed a win today to get rid of the bad taste, put some real distance twixt 'em, and to show them all who's boss. Neither of those guys has come past Tommeke yet.

I see the foundation of a new Tour train building at QSI... provided they bribe Steegmans to stick around, which they probably will.

This video is an attempt to show the ambience at the final hour of the Nice Ironman competition. A lame attempt i'll admit, but wth? If you're ever going to finish towards the end of an ironman, i suggest Nice as the place to do it. The applause and support and general ambience at the end is really remarkable. Dj's, pom-pom girls, people dancing, shouting, dance music blasting ... Some finishers just go on through, others raise their arms or just have a huge smile, one guy did some pushups while the dj counted for him, another did a cartwheel, some ran through with their little kids holding their hands. And this all 8 hours after the winners have finished.

When i went out my door to walk over to see the last hour or so of the Ironman, the first thing i saw was a guy across the street, pushing his triathlon bike, head hanging down to his chest, walking with a pronounced. Painful. Slow. Trudge. Medal around his neck. He'd done well. Hope he felt better the next day.

Then i got to the promenade and started seeing more of the people who'd finished: one guy asleep on the pavement with his wife by his side in all the raucous noise and confusion and crowds everywhere. Then the medical tent - massages, those heat blanket thingies, oxygen, people limping aorund, Oy!

Then every now and then you see a finisher with a medal around their neck who look fresh as a daisy, like they've just had a nice walk in the park.

Then finally you get to the finish line ... and that's the video. At the end there's a fireworks display (no one timed their finish to coincide with it this year) and then apparently a few hundred people stayed all night to party on the prom next to the beach until daybreak.

I could not do an ironman even if i wanted to, but i'll be there again next year to help welcome the last finishers in.
