This is fun
because you can really justify about 10 different combinations of the top 5. My only hope is that it leads to a wide open and constantly changing Tour.
  1. Kloden
  2. Valverde
  3. Vino
  4. Evans
  5. Sastre

my top five...
I have to put Levi in the mix. he saved himself during Dauphine and may be set to peak in the Tour.

Valverde does not excite me this year. Vino will cave under the pressure and lose chunks of time in the mountains.

Sastre will be close, but won't have the edge to win the whole thing. He may fade in the final TT.

Kloden has historically placed best out of all of the current competitors and has the right combination of climbing and TT skills.

1)Kloden
2)Leipheimer
3)Evans
4)Kashekin
5)Vinokourov

You know,
I completely forgot about Levi. But I still have to put him 6th because while I think he'll be fine on the long TTs I think he'll drop some time in the mountains (just enough to bump him out of top 5).

Though, if VV doesn't make it all the way through then Levi does vault into 5th. I will be rooting for him none the less to finish as high as he can.

For Kloden to win
Vino has to crack early. It's Vino's team and they will work to protect him first. Kloden would be too dangerous to let go in a break. Maybe they'll use the old T-Mobile tactics and have Kashechkin chase down Kloden.

Vino has had trouble with the transition from flat stages to the first mountain stage. So I've picked Kloden because he seems to have the fewest weaknesses.

Does Evans have enough support? Rodriguez and McEwen won't be much help in the mountains. Will the team put its resources in the surer thing - the green jersey for McEwen?

  1. Kloden
  2. Valverde
  3. Evans
  4. Menchov (there has to be some surprise in the top 5)
  5. Levi

This is his lucky year
First mountainstage a nice little bumpy ride finishing with a not so terrible climb up the Colombiere and a descent. Not the usual, flat flat flat BAM! Tourmalet! that we've seen versions of these last years. Should be easier one the guys with transition-troubles.

Hard to believe
that I'm the first one to pick Vino:
  1.  Vino
  2.  Kloden
  3.  Kash
  4.  Leipheimer
  5.  Sastre
And while we're making predictions:

As for tomorrow's Landis arbitration verdict announcement (very rough English translation here), my prediction is that Floyd loses, and Oscarita immediately begins whining that he should be allowed to wear the maillot jaune on Saturday in London.

My Top 5
I'm gonna be a little foolish with this:
  1. Sastre - He's got the team to do it, and should have the form to finally take a win. He's the best climber of them all, and I think he's significantly improved his time trialing. I think we'll see the return of the Blue Train tactic with this strong of a team.
  2. Levi - Similar reasons to Sastre. I think he's peaking at the right time this year (not during the Dauphine or the D-Tour). A better time trialist than most of the other GC contenders (except for maybe Vino, but that's questionable) when he's on form, and he can hold himself close enough in the mountains.
  3. Moreau - Looking at his win in the French championships, he's hard to ignore. He's coming in roaring, and I think he's going to come out with his best placing ever.
  4. Evans - It's logical that he moves up more
  5. Vino - He'll do his usual of losing time early, but nobody will let him get away this time, and the TTs won't be enough to make up that much time.
I don't think Valv.Piti will finish (if he even starts... Remember, Puerto was dropped the day before the prologue last year. We've got 1 more long day ahead of us), and Menchov just doesn't seem to be the priority of his team. I think Dekker will ride better than him, and Rabo will support Dekker and ~:>

by BDBrian on Jul 5, 2007 12:18 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'll bite
In order of finish:
  1. Vino - best combo of TT/climbing skills with the aggressiveness to make up time if he does have a bad day.
  2. Kloden - just behind Vino, but more than capable if team leader stumbles.
  3. Evans - continues his improvement.
  4. Karpets - surprise! Like Brian I don't think Valv.Piti gets to Paris and Karpets will have support of a great team.
  5. Sastre - too many KMs of TTs put paid his chance.

But chris...
If riders finished in bib order then the highest placed finisher would be 11th!  There would be no top five! lol

For my top five, I wrote out the possible top 10, pasted them on my dart board and got someone who has no interest at all in the race to throw darts at 'em.  Now I don't know if the darts hitting the rider's names eliminates them from contention or not, but here's the list in dart hitting order:

  1. Sastre
  2. Valverde
  3. Evans
  4. leipheimer
  5. Rogers
  6. Kashechkin
  7. Menchov
  8. Kloden
  9. Vinokourov
  10. Contador
Again, I'm not sure which is the order here!  But one thing's for sure: a whole lot of hard analysis went into my method!

by ursula on Jul 5, 2007 12:35 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Top 5
  1. Vino -- The Pyrenees are harder than the Alps this year, so even if he has his usual early mountain-stage slump, it shouldn't be decisive.
  2. Valverde -- the most talented rider in this field, and his improved time trialing should keep him on the podium
  3. Kloden -- probably the best time trialer among the favorites, but will likely work for Vino in the mountains
  4. Evans -- other than Valverde, the only rider among the favorites who is still on the upswing rather than the downswing side of his career
  5. Sastre -- I hope I'm wrong and that Carlos makes the podium, but I fear the time trials are too long for him this year.

Usually, I avoid commitment like the plague
But I'll make an exception for Podium Cafe.
  1. Vino - even though he will be wearing a giant turquoise bull's eye
  2. Levi
  3. Sastre - Levi will blow past Sastre in the final TT
  4. Evans - You won't see him for the entire tour...but he'll be there or thereabouts
  5. Kloden - Kloden will do to Valverde what Levi will do to Sastre

This is way different than who I "want"
to win.  My picks:
  1. Vino.  With his strong team, his desperate desire to win, and his sense of revenge for last year's exclusion, it's his to lose. He needs to avoid his customary "bad day."  He is, for sure, an angry guy on the bike.
  2. VV.  Strong team, but I'm hoping he can hang in there for all three weeks.
  3. Kloeden.  Past experience shows us he can place 2nd and 3rd in the Tour already, and he's showing fantastic form. I don't think Vino will unleash him and let him ride for himself, but I've been wrong before...
  4. Leipheimer.  Hopefully he won't have bad TTs.  Hopefully DSC will support him enough to keep him "rested" enough for the TT stages.
  5. Sastre.  Ditto.  He's the most dangerous in his third week, so look out for magnificent attacks in the Pyrenees.

by Ruthann on Jul 5, 2007 1:59 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

My guesses
  1. Someone who will fail a drug test
  2. Master of the EPO universe
  3. I don't know
  4. Clueless
  5. Whoever the dart hits

Mine are
  1.  Levi- Unwavering focus.  Excellent TT form. Good team.  Won't get hauled off in hand cuffs Friday night.
  2. Vino
  3. Kloden (will be about as supportive for Vino as he was for Jan)
  4.  Valverde- long TT's will keep him off the podium
  5.  Cadel.  Consrvative approach will keep him off the podium but in the top 5.

1 Vino - he's ready
2 Levi - TT's into 2nd
3 Kloden - Good chance but will support Vino
4 Evans - it's about time for him
5 Menchov - with a stage win or 2

Hi All
I have been reading this site for a while, but haven't made any comments until today.  I am really impressed with everyone's knowledge of pro cycling!  Which is the reason I can't understand why Frank Schleck has only been mentioned by one person in their top five- or even ten!  Is he really that bad of a time trialist?

by NorCal on Jul 5, 2007 7:35 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

welcome!
CW is that he'll burn himself out working for Carlos Sastre, and maybe get loose for a stage win. I wouldn't forget about him for the KOM jersey, though CSC won't give him a chance to do much freelancing. I think this came up earlier in the week; come back in a year or two and Schleck's name will be all over this site in July.
Got a problem? Va fa Napoli!

by Chris... on Jul 5, 2007 7:41 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah
Sastre is the undisputed leader. While Schleck can easily make the top 10, he's not going to make the top 5 or the podium unless Sastre bottoms out really early. Schleck is, of course, just as bad of a time trialist as Sastre (possibly a little better), which would hurt him now.

by BDBrian on Jul 5, 2007 8:56 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

he's riding for Carlos
I assume he'll be in the mix, but he won't spend much energy defending his own GC position. He might end up in the top 10 as a result.

Last year was Frank's first ever TdF,
and it was his first (and only) 3-week stage race ever (as far as I've been able to research.)

He's raced a lot of days so far this year, too.  That third week will be brutal.

Quicky Stage Review: Argument for Carlos
This year the tour goes clockwise, Alps first, then the Pyrenees. The Pyrenees stages are an evil test. The Alps stages are made for attacking. After the Alps mountain stages, there is a chance to rest before the Albi TT.

Stage 8 is the the first tough day in the mountains, and looks like a classic Vino cracker. Stage 9 starts with a climb, and finishes with a long decent into Briancon. Since it's after a rest day, and before flatter stages, it should be a launch pad for one or more favorites. Menchov might go apeshit to try to establish himself. There will be a lot of pressure on the contenders here, and it might be the end of the road for one or more hopefuls.

Sastre will (hopefully) be in the mix at that point.

There are a couple of flat stages, then the albi TT.

The Albi TT will be all about defense. Anyone who goes for it to gain 3 minutes risks losing 10 minutes on the road to Plateau-de-Beille. On the way to the hateful stage 15. And, then the queen stage to the Col d'Aubisque.

The Pyrenees look a lot harder than the Alps, that's for sure. Since they are coming at the end of the Tour, they will favor the real hardmen of the GC race--the legs of Carlos, Evans, and Klodi are proven. I'm not so sure about everyone else.

I wonder, will the final TT matter?I'm scratching the Albi TT as a factor, and putting all the weight on the Pyrenees. Carlos can make time in the mountaintop-finish stages and come out on top.

My Top 5... is different... ;-)
1 Levi Leipheimer
2 Vino
3 Valverde
4 Menchov
5 Sastre/Klöden

Truly hope i'm right, it'll be the 2 TT's that'll decide on this outcome. All are good enough in hte mountains, still think Klöden is overrated and probably the only dopehead in the top 10, since he was very, very close to Ullrich who, as we all know, "never doped". So how the heck did he stay with his leader in the mountains?

I really DO hope that there's not another case during the Tour, that would be devastating for cycling...

This video is an attempt to show the ambience at the final hour of the Nice Ironman competition. A lame attempt i'll admit, but wth? If you're ever going to finish towards the end of an ironman, i suggest Nice as the place to do it. The applause and support and general ambience at the end is really remarkable. Dj's, pom-pom girls, people dancing, shouting, dance music blasting ... Some finishers just go on through, others raise their arms or just have a huge smile, one guy did some pushups while the dj counted for him, another did a cartwheel, some ran through with their little kids holding their hands. And this all 8 hours after the winners have finished.

When i went out my door to walk over to see the last hour or so of the Ironman, the first thing i saw was a guy across the street, pushing his triathlon bike, head hanging down to his chest, walking with a pronounced. Painful. Slow. Trudge. Medal around his neck. He'd done well. Hope he felt better the next day.

Then i got to the promenade and started seeing more of the people who'd finished: one guy asleep on the pavement with his wife by his side in all the raucous noise and confusion and crowds everywhere. Then the medical tent - massages, those heat blanket thingies, oxygen, people limping aorund, Oy!

Then every now and then you see a finisher with a medal around their neck who look fresh as a daisy, like they've just had a nice walk in the park.

Then finally you get to the finish line ... and that's the video. At the end there's a fireworks display (no one timed their finish to coincide with it this year) and then apparently a few hundred people stayed all night to party on the prom next to the beach until daybreak.

I could not do an ironman even if i wanted to, but i'll be there again next year to help welcome the last finishers in.
