Zabriskie to Slipstream?

Cycling4all is reporting that a bunch of riders including Zabriskie have contracts with Slipstream for next year. Also reporting that Slipstream has a new co-sponsor ABN AMRO, which is a global banking group, and along with restaurant chain Chipotle's sponsorship, the budget will be 8 million Euros.

USA Professional team Slipstream has big plans for next year and gives some hope for a new future of pro-cycling. Under the management of ex-pro rider Jonathan Vaughters, assisted by a.o. ex-pro Frankie Andreu, the team seems to have (pre-)contracted already several top-riders for next year. Named are  a.o.

Marcus Backstedt (Swe) = Liquigas; David Cañada Gracia (Spa) and David Millar (GBr) = both Saunier; Christophe Laurent (Fra) = Crédit Agricole; David Zabriskie (Usa) = Team Riis; Martijn Maaskant (Ned) = Rabo Continental, who should have signed for 2 years leider, while also Jérôme Pineau (Fra) and Thomas Voeckler (Fra) = both Bouyges Telecom seems to be contracted.

New sponsor of the team will be Chipotle (a Mexican restaurant chain) and as co-sponsor ABN AMRO is named. The budget should be around 8 million Euro next year.

They aim for a doping-free cycling world. Each year - each rider will go through 50 bloodtests and 50 urine tests; which seems to be much more (5 times) than the average team is doing. The costs (around 20.000 dollar per rider) are payed by the Agency for Cycling Ethics, which got their money from gifts and (co-)sponsors.

This team will not apply for a Pro Tour licence as - in their opinion - the participation in the 3 Major Tours it too much for the team. But they are now lobying already for a wild-card in the biggest event, The Tour de France.

Now that would be pretty neat
Amassing that much proven talent, along with French riders, would help their chances of becoming a Pro Tour team or at least getting a wild card invite to the Tour.

Very interesting
if true, that those riders don't mind riding on a non-pro-tour team.  It would say to me that the pro-tour may not mean so much to the peloton.  But I'll wait for some authoritative statements...

Sounds amazing
I'd bet they could get bids to any Pro Tour event they want with that kind of talent. Certainly the Dauphine and the Classics, and probably some of the 1-week tours.

I would love to see Slipstream evolve into a Pro Tour team, and this will certainly help them be competitive in the upper Continental ranks (in Europe), and even in some of the Pro Tour races.

Interesting
I wonder how much of this will pan out.

I hadn't heard that Frankie Andreu was working with Slipstream.  Good for him, if that's true.  His firing from Toyota-United seemed a bit below the belt.  He's not listed among the staff on the team's website, but that might not be up to date:

http://www.slipstreamsports.com/team.staff.php

I'd be surprised if some of the riders listed, especially David Millar, Dave Z, and the French riders, would sign with a team that didn't have a pretty-sure-thing entry into the Tour next year.  Maybe this is a sign that Vaughters is getting promising feedback from ASO on his bid for a Tour spot.  I hope so.

Ok . . .
When I read that, I checked the date to make sure it wasn't April 1.

I think it's becoming the fashion to indulge in rampant speculation about transfers with little or no evidence to support it--and it seems as though Slipstream is sneaking up on T-Mobile as the most likely team to be mentioned.

I could be wrong, but this seems to fall into the "way too good to be true" category.

The story comes from Wieleruitslagen.be
Here is the original:

More:

And the rest:

In hun plaats komen elf nieuwe renners.

Ouch
Dutch hurts my eyes.

This is one of those weird mixes of fact and speculation that the cycling press loves best, at least to my reading.  Like, is Prentice Steffen really back on the team?  He resigned under pressure after one of the rounds of Lance controversies.

A previous article in VN quoted Vaughters that they did not have a new title sponsor, but would have increased budget in the coming two years to hire eleven new riders.  Now, is the sponsor blah blah about ABN-Nimro news?  Sounds like we'll get confirmation this weekend.  That would be zehr cool.

As for the riders, it looks more like a list of who they want to sign rather than how they have signed.  It looks like a fab roster, though, if they get it.  I guess I'm always a tad skeptical about transfer gossip.  Show me the official press release and I might just believe it's signed and sealed.  That there are no direct statements from Vaughters or anyone in the team management in this article makes it less credible for me.

It'd be great to see them in the Tour, and I think it's entirely possible they will get the invite if not next year, certainly the year after.  I'm just not convinced it will be with every major English-speaking pro rider on the roster. ;-)

This is from Christophe Laurents Web Page
google translated:
Christophe will leave the Agricultural credit for TEAM SLIPSTREAM

It was a decision difficult to take because to leave a team in whom one smells oneself well, who more is prestige of the Agricultural credit, is never obvious. But my desire for living an experiment abroad was stronger in my choice. Moreover, the TEAM Slipstream - which should change name the next year, is an ambitious team which will postulate with the Pro-Turn as of this winter so certain licences release itself. In any event, Jonathan Vaughters, the old the US runner Postal one and Agricultural credit which directs the project, has already the promise to take part in the greatest tests of the calendar, thanks to the extremely probable arrivals of some courreurs of reputations... the budget will be 8,5 million euros, the equivalent of the majority of the teams of the Pro-Turn, and even a little more than that of the Agricultural credit

All that should open besides the doors of the Turn of France to the team dice 2008. Jonathan Vaughters seems to have very good relationship with Christian Prudhomme, the director of the Turn. And a priori, if we are actually selected for the Outer Loop, Jonathan already envisaged of me to align there. All that allured me when Jonathan spoke to me about his project for the first time last February, at the time of the Turn of California where it was used to me as translator during the press conferences.
That attenuates my disappointment not to take part in the Tower this year. I was out of balance after my good beginning of season, but I suspected that the advertisement of my decision to leave the Agricultural credit at the end of the year was going to lead Roger Legeay to choose another runner. I includes/understands and respect this choice... Of as much, therefore, that I would be certainly at the beginning of the edition 2008 which will perhaps pass by Mende.
So long 30 years, I thus will approach a new turning in my career. Previously, I hope well to dispute the Turn of Spain at the end of the season with the Agricultural credit. My program of race is not stopped yet.

Darn
You beat me to it. Laurent's confirmed, the others aren't yet.

The Dutch article claims that there's going to be an announcement regarding the team coming up this weekend, in London (so, Friday/Saturday/Sunday?)

Here's the Babelfish translations of them (I can't format them like Cdale or the others did, but I'll try my best)

Meuse side to Slipstream renewed?
top press and change of name

The ProContinentale plough team Slipstream will go next year by living as Chipotle, the name a Mexican restaurant chain. The budget of the plough will get also a financial injection, as a result of which she might euro have a negligent 6.5 million.

That is not some what at the team will change. Of the current core of 23 renners, can stay on only fifteen men. This means that eight renners in search must to a new employer. In their place eleven new renners come.

In the meantime the rumour mill does its work. After earlier already the shot David Millar (Saunier Duval) and the American David Zabriskie (team CSC) gelinkt became, also the name of the Dutchman Martijn Maaskant is now named as possible strengthening. Meuse side, to the battle at the continental team of Rabobank, is at present LEADER in European continental Uci-circuit.

Strong antidopingbeleid

That the American team this way strong to is himself evolve to `topteam', no surprise can be called. Thus it profiles himself itself as a real cleane plough. The ProContinentale formatie spend for that 400,000 dollars annually.

Per year every renner 50 blood tests undergoes and also once more 50 urine tests. That approximately five times than on average and the costs have been amounted to thus zo'n 20,000 dollars more by renner. That amount is paid by an organisation Agency called for Cycling Ethics. They get the money especially by means of grants and sponsors.

Frankie Andreu hold there a top position. Two other ex-werknemers of US Postal, Jonathan Vaughters and Prentice Steffen, is the managers of team Slipstream. These three men cooperate closely to the defrauder no give chance.

Tour 2008

It is striking that for the tour the France of 2008th by their strong antidopingbeleid think being able drag because the managers of the plough wildcard in the guard have communicated themselves team Slipstream, it the sport helps. And if there but something is what wants the organisation of the tour, then it is `schone' Tour.

That which wish is taken seriously by the UCI, becomes clear from a pronouncement of current Slipstreamrenner Huub Duyn in faithful. team manager Vaughters is dikke maatjes with ASO. We could not drive for the nothing criterion international already.

Laurent newest acquisition Slipstream

Christophe Laurent next year the colours of team will defend Slipstream. That says he on its Internet site. The renner of Crédit Agricole signed a contract for two years at the ProContinentalploeg, which with Kilian Patour and has Huub Duyn already two Europeans.

It was a difficult decision because a team leave in which you feel yourself well is never simple. This is however a complete beautiful experience abroad. The project of Jonathan Vaughters spoke me a lot to and is future plans is promising, reacted the person whose birthday it isperson whose birthday it is person whose birthday it is French man to its transfer.

The American team Slipstream has renners still more for the coming year in mind. Thus the rumours will add itself the round that David Millar, David Zabriskie, Christian Vandevelde and the Dutchman Martijn Maaskant the coming year at the plough. In 2008, one hopes thus in the tour start the France.

Slipstream become Chipotle, with Burghardt & Voeckler

Rather we could on WVcycling already communicate that David Zabriskie (CSC), David Millar (Saunier Duval), Martijn Maaskant (Rabo CT) and Christophe Laurent (Crédit Agricole) would go to the renewed team Slipstream. Now also Marcus Burghardt (t t-Mobile), David Cãnada (Saunier Duval) become, Jérôme Pineau and thomas Voeckler (Bouygues Telecom) to the new team gelinkt.

According to sport world team Slipstream next year a metamorfose would undergo. New hoofdsponsor must underline ambitions. With a budget of 8 millions euro Chipotle, become a Mexican restaurant chain, the new name of the team. Abn-Amro cosponsor will become. This weekend the new plough would be presented in London, where the Tourstart take place.

Just like predecessor Slipstream Chipotle much attention would give to doping suppression. Slipstream spend this year 40,000 dollars to internal controls, at Chipotle each renner annual 50 urine - and blood tests must undergo.

Concerning participation to the ProTour one does not think provisionally after at Chipotle. The more still, control refuse application a licentie. Three large round off too incriminating would be for a new team. Toch one hopes be able next take year to the tour the France.

This video is an attempt to show the ambience at the final hour of the Nice Ironman competition. A lame attempt i'll admit, but wth? If you're ever going to finish towards the end of an ironman, i suggest Nice as the place to do it. The applause and support and general ambience at the end is really remarkable. Dj's, pom-pom girls, people dancing, shouting, dance music blasting ... Some finishers just go on through, others raise their arms or just have a huge smile, one guy did some pushups while the dj counted for him, another did a cartwheel, some ran through with their little kids holding their hands. And this all 8 hours after the winners have finished.

When i went out my door to walk over to see the last hour or so of the Ironman, the first thing i saw was a guy across the street, pushing his triathlon bike, head hanging down to his chest, walking with a pronounced. Painful. Slow. Trudge. Medal around his neck. He'd done well. Hope he felt better the next day.

Then i got to the promenade and started seeing more of the people who'd finished: one guy asleep on the pavement with his wife by his side in all the raucous noise and confusion and crowds everywhere. Then the medical tent - massages, those heat blanket thingies, oxygen, people limping aorund, Oy!

Then every now and then you see a finisher with a medal around their neck who look fresh as a daisy, like they've just had a nice walk in the park.

Then finally you get to the finish line ... and that's the video. At the end there's a fireworks display (no one timed their finish to coincide with it this year) and then apparently a few hundred people stayed all night to party on the prom next to the beach until daybreak.

I could not do an ironman even if i wanted to, but i'll be there again next year to help welcome the last finishers in.
