Should I Watch the Eneco Tour?

Five reasons not to:

  1. No Tom Boonen. I don't recall if he planned to skip it regardless, but Sunday's crash presumably sealed his decision. He's OK, but probably planning his schedule with rainbows and Arab fortunes in mind.
  2. The parcours. Last year did little to separate the top GC spots, leaving the blood red jersey to be decided by sprint bonuses. This year, apart from a few familiar tracts in the Ardennes on stage 1 and the Valkenberg on stage 5, it's one flat after another. At least this year they'll finish up with a time trial, not a race jury.
  3. Last year sucked. You knew it, I knew it, Stef Schumacher knew it.
  4. No Pro Tour competition: the top contenders aren't around and the white jersey will be nowhere to be seen. This despite the Pro Tour being the biggest supporter of the race. If they don't care, should I?
  5. There's a Tour of Flanders (yay!), a Tour of Belgium (rrmmm), so do we really need a tour of Belgium and a slice of the Netherlands?
Five reasons to ignore the above and watch anyway:
  1. The startlist. Naturally the Belgian teams and Rabo are here to win. That means McEwen, Hoste, Dekker, Boogerd, Flecha, Graeme Browne, Van Petegem and up-and-comer Wouter Weylandt from the home teams. Also, Ballan, Gusev, Yaro-Pop, Nibali, JJ Haedo, Kirchen, Bog Thor, Adam Hansen (healed), David Millar, and a smattering of other big names.
  2. Cycling.TV in da house!
  3. This is kind of a tour for Classics men. Not strictly because it's mostly in Belgium, though in a way the terrain calls out to the Classics guys. The time trial finale will demand more than just closing speed, as will the first stage with its Ardennes cotes, and stage 6 with no less than 15 climbs. Both of these stages should cost the pure sprinters some time. I love Classics riding more than any other style, so if that's what we'll see, bring it on.
  4. There's a certain logic to a rouleurs/sprinters' Tour in this calendar slot. These guys have little to live for at the Vuelta, but need to keep fresh for the Fall classics and Worlds.
  5. It's Cycling.

Perfect!
I'm on the East Coast this week, and finding it much harder to watch. Out west, I just give my bleary-eyed kids something to do for an hour and catch the end of the race. Here things are in full cry by the time Anthony and Brian come on.

The last 5 reasons are enough for me.
I just found out that my husband is going salmon fishing on Lake Michigan with his brother on Wednesday, leaving me free to indulge in all the stages through the weekend with my Tanzanian Peaberry Roast and A&B.  I tell ya, after the (to me) roller-coaster drama of the TdF and the horror of the WCSN commentators, I'm really looking forward to it. (Not that I wasn't rapturous with Jens!'s victory, as you all know already.)  I'm pulling for the Goose in Stage 1, for sure.

Salmon?
In Lake Michigan? Man, that is one resilient fish...

This video is an attempt to show the ambience at the final hour of the Nice Ironman competition. A lame attempt i'll admit, but wth? If you're ever going to finish towards the end of an ironman, i suggest Nice as the place to do it. The applause and support and general ambience at the end is really remarkable. Dj's, pom-pom girls, people dancing, shouting, dance music blasting ... Some finishers just go on through, others raise their arms or just have a huge smile, one guy did some pushups while the dj counted for him, another did a cartwheel, some ran through with their little kids holding their hands. And this all 8 hours after the winners have finished.

When i went out my door to walk over to see the last hour or so of the Ironman, the first thing i saw was a guy across the street, pushing his triathlon bike, head hanging down to his chest, walking with a pronounced. Painful. Slow. Trudge. Medal around his neck. He'd done well. Hope he felt better the next day.

Then i got to the promenade and started seeing more of the people who'd finished: one guy asleep on the pavement with his wife by his side in all the raucous noise and confusion and crowds everywhere. Then the medical tent - massages, those heat blanket thingies, oxygen, people limping aorund, Oy!

Then every now and then you see a finisher with a medal around their neck who look fresh as a daisy, like they've just had a nice walk in the park.

Then finally you get to the finish line ... and that's the video. At the end there's a fireworks display (no one timed their finish to coincide with it this year) and then apparently a few hundred people stayed all night to party on the prom next to the beach until daybreak.

I could not do an ironman even if i wanted to, but i'll be there again next year to help welcome the last finishers in.
