Virtual Directeur Sportif '08: Let's Get Started!

The Basics:

  • Each team will have to select 25 riders, using up to 150 points in the process.
  • The only other rule at the outset is that you cannot have more than two riders worth 20 points or more. This eliminates the 4 grand tour studs and 21 scrubs strategy. Frankly, I could be talked out of this, but I dunno, I think it lacks creativity, and doesn't really resemble how teams are built. At least, not since the 2004 T-Mobile squad... and we all know how that ended.
  • Submit your team by Wednesday, February 27, 2008 via email to podiumcafe@yahoo.com vdsentry2008@yahoo.com. As usual, if you send it in early, any last-minute changes are due by the same deadline. Update [2008-1-17 15:33:46 by chris]: Don't forget to include your nom de blog with your submittal.

How it will work:

  • This will be your team for the entire 2008 season. Earlier I posted the races that will be included in the competition. N.b.: the grand tours will have separate prizes for winners, we hope, but will NOT be scored separately in a second competition. We will have one unified VDS in 2008. It's all about the unity.
  • During the season, you will not need to turn in a roster for each race. Rather, the top nine scores all points by guys on your 25-man roster will count towards your haul. Another reason not to pick 15 guys based on their potential performance at the Tour.
  • I will come up with a substitution policy before Het Volk. I think it'll be a little more liberal than last year, but will listen to ideas about it.[editor's note, by chris] The substitution policy is... no substitutions.
  • I said I wanted to try to let people participate in grand tours only if they join the party late, but am a little flummoxed about how to do it. So for now don't assume I'll come up with something. Basically, the dilemma is how to let people compete on a level playing field if they get to pick a team in June. Do I give them a short list of riders to choose from? I'd like to at least do this for the Tour, but again, am open to ideas about how to do so without messing up the year-long VDS, our top priority.
  • Update [2008-1-15 23:43:29 by chris]: The scoring system has been posted, see the next post.
  • Finally: as always, this contest is completely free and open to anyone who bothers to register a pseudonym at the Podium Cafe. No actual information required. Name your team and assign a DS. One entry per person, please. [And if you see anything that looks patently stupid, let me know asap.]

Rider values on the flip!

Star-divide

First, a word about the rationale here: these values roughly track the Cycling Quotient points standings from last year. Not the perfect system, but close enough, and considering how each rider's points tend to vary wildly from one year to the next, it's not worth fretting over small point values, IMHO. Also, I wanted to use something objective; I think the mistake I've made in the past was to try to project how guys will do, and what you ended up with was Chris Fontecchio's Favorite Riders, in order. Not good... or accurate.

That said, riders have been moved around, particularly in the top three brackets, to try to make the choices harder. Other guys were moved up if their '07 points scores were unusually low (think Hincapie, Rogers, other injured guys). Also, I took the U25 studs and sprinkled them around the scale, somewhat randomly... otherwise they'd all be bargain picks, and would show up on 85% of the rosters.

OK, have at it!

Double Post
Sorry to put the opposite type of double post here but Menchov is now implicated.  Look at this German story found by Jean C at Rant:

fairly warned
but his point value stays til proven guilty!

by Chris... on Jan 16, 2008 2:55 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

Oh of course
It only makes sense to keep Menchov at 25 until proven guilty.  IMO that just adds spice to this hole competition:  Not to be callous towards the riders but with this VDS competition, does one take a chance with Menchov or with Bert say, knowing that you might not find out the truth and risk losing their points or do you go with more unproven riders?  I guess with Menchov we'll probably know if these new allegations have merit before the deadline but the CONI/OP folks?

Proven guilty ...
Does that ever happen?

Complex job
It will be interesting to see what effect longitudinal testing has on results this year. Maybe Valverde will have a good year.

by KevinK on Jan 16, 2008 8:40 AM EST   0 recs

I hope you are being sarcastic!
I doubt Valverde will be dumb enough to continue his doping practices under the new passport system. (But who knows!)

Now that the Spanish government can no longer sweep Valverde's blood bads under the rug...I wonder if he will race at all this year...at least in Italy (and the Tour which goes through Italy).  I'm sure the Spanish races will welcome him.

I predict we will never see the "promise" that he showed and the hype will not be met.

Adios Green Bullet!

I left out part of my comment
I wonder if we'll see a similar collapse by other riders who have to abandon the blood bags. Maybe if the playing field is more level, Valv.Piti can shine again.

Wow!
Jimmy Casper is a steal at 4 points.

And look at all those former 1.5 babies who are now ranked above 16.

It'll be an interesting VDS year, that's for sure.

Chris-
Are you going to produce the spreadsheets with the riders' names and points?  Similar to last year?  Thanks for all the hard work to make this happen.

Well as Alice said "Kiss my Grits" I thought I was on to something.

by CannonDowell on Jan 16, 2008 1:40 PM EST   0 recs

sorry dude
If I leave one decent rider off the list, I guarantee at least 75 people notice and put him on their team.

by Chris... on Jan 16, 2008 2:17 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Do you think
TC would notice is you snuck Hennie in at the bottom the 1.5ers?
"That rug really tied the room together. "

by Drew on Jan 16, 2008 2:45 PM EST   0 recs

Hennie is available
for the low low price of one point. But to clarify, that's less a comment on his abilities and more about the fact that he's not planning to ride any of the races.

Honestly, you could pick 25 of your friends and make them your roster. Just don't to win or gain anyone's respect. [That said, I could see DS Little Bear staffing his team with his imaginary friends.]

Is Slipstream...
the only proContinental team included?
Racing for Victory and Free Beer!

by DemonCats on Jan 16, 2008 3:54 PM EST   0 recs

Nope
Seriously... every living person is eligible. Slipstream is the only continental team I bothered to mine in any great quantity, but I think you'll see plenty of guys on the list from LPR, Tinkoff, etc.

by Chris... on Jan 16, 2008 4:54 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Nope
I see some Selle Italia (or whatever it's called now... Serramenti PVC Diguiovanni?).

by BDBrian on Jan 16, 2008 4:55 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

I think
Bertolini isn't on a PT team... is he?

by BDBrian on Jan 16, 2008 4:55 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Why?
Why is Sebastian Chavanel worth more than his bro
and how is Pereiro worth only 2 points?

by d rod on Jan 16, 2008 7:56 PM EST   0 recs

Can you say 30 minute gift?
He only did so well in the 2 earlier tours because of his breakaways after the mountains, too.

by BDBrian on Jan 16, 2008 11:58 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

LAst year's points
Like I said, it was based more on 2007 performances and less on what I would project them to do. My guesses about the future are tedious and wrong. If you think they're bargains, there you go!

by Chris... on Jan 17, 2008 12:00 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

Team Foolish Sentiments is back
With my classics guy, I'm hoping to, once again, take the yellow after that. And I should have a few contenders for some other races, too. Plus, I've got some young guys and Slipstream guys who might not win anything big, but who I'm hoping for a few points here and there from.

by BDBrian on Jan 17, 2008 12:14 PM EST   0 recs

question
Did Kjell Carlström retire and I missed it, or do I get him for zero points?

by callmecayce on Jan 17, 2008 4:19 PM EST   0 recs

and also
No Francis Mourey? Or did I miss where not everyone is included on the list ... (Quite possible.)

by callmecayce on Jan 17, 2008 4:21 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Oops
Never mind. Turns out I can't read and missed the very last line.

Good Luck
I had to keep in mind which riders might be having problems with the CONI hearings coming up.

Definitely no DiLuca or Contador. Leipheimer wont be winning any of the GT's. Don't know how Evans will do, so no 25 pointers for me!

Racing for Victory and Free Beer!

by DemonCats on Jan 18, 2008 11:23 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

I bet 20$
that Chris can't resist the temptation, picks DiLuca, who then gets busted in april. Chris then gets to relive the whole Basso-fiasco all over again.

Seriously this is too much fun. I just got home from travel and found the ridervalues posted. I'm going spreadsheat-crazy trying to find my perfect team. Damn it's hard to avoid the boring alternative to keep most of the riders I had last season.

by Jens on Jan 18, 2008 11:53 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

Don't know how...
that works out.

I down loaded the top-15 racers for all the races, for the last three years and started choosing riders whose names appeared with regularity and then subtracted the racers who might have a CONI hearing and came up with a rough list, further whittled down by points!

Racing for Victory and Free Beer!

by DemonCats on Jan 18, 2008 1:15 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

At this point...
my two main GT hopes lie in Ricco and Devolder, mimor stage races with Voigt, Classics with Flecha, Hammond and so on.
Racing for Victory and Free Beer!

by DemonCats on Jan 18, 2008 1:18 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Can I get a taste of that action?
Basso's not on the list, so he's a one-pointer.

Last year's performance as a predictor of 2008 has two problems: 1) it doesn't work; and 2) others will tend to use the same values, so even if it does work, it just keeps you on par with a dozen other teams at least.

by Chris... on Jan 18, 2008 3:51 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

What I meant was
that I bet you can't resist going for Giro-glory with the potentially lethal Danilo Diluca and find yourself having spent 20 points without getting anything in return when he spends more time in the CONI courtroom than in the saddle.

And yes, the key is finding the guy no one expects to do well, not the one everyone has his eyes on. Last year there weren't that many teams who had Riccardo Ricco, but that will probably change in 2008.

by Jens on Jan 18, 2008 4:27 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Well
You are a pretty astute judge of character. However, the profile of the Giro is helping overcome my otherwise reckless impulses.

20 point riders
I'm confused. are we allowed to have 2 20 point riders or just 1?

Up to two
riders in the 20-25 range. You can have zero.

This is the entrance to the old velodrome I happened by in Buenos Aires. Tried to get in, but the guard ran after me and started yelling about calling the police. The "Lo siento, no entiendo. Soy turisto." thing didn't work. At all. Ah well.

Did a bit of searching and found this January 07 story about the velodrome here. Built for the 1951 Pan-American Games, that track yielded 152 medals for Argentian cyclists. Perón glory years, indeed. Turns out that it's been closed for 10 or so years, mostly used as a tow lot. There was a restoration plan in place, but it's fallen beyond repair and is slated for demolition. A shame.
