[Cavagrande del Cassibile, Syracuse - Sicily]

If you need to find adventure vacations and live unique experiences, maybe the south of Italy could be a great choice. Here you are an easy to read article about a tour by bicycle of the east coast of the Sicily island.

Highlights:

It's a great chance to join together fitness and culture. You could:

  • Ride through ancient landscapes and cultures
  • See breathtaking panoramas
  • Learn more about ancient history of the Greek and Arabic cultures
  • View the folkloristic attractions

(Disclaimer: Special Thanks to Trip Adventure.org Travel Network Association for Pictures and Resources)

Star-divide

Before to start be sure to carry with you at least these gear:

  • Mountain or All terrain bike (be sure to see the trenitalia website to carry your bike in the trains)
  • Water proof jacket
  • Sun Cream (sun is strong in winter too)
  • Repair kit for your bike
  • A first aid kit

Detailed itinerary:

Your adventure will be of 6 stages along 8 days/7 nights:

1° Arrival From Catania airport to Palazzolo Acreide, an important  village on Iblei Mounts because its San Paolo and San Sebastiano Churches are included in Unesco World Heritage list.

2° Wake up and breakfast. From Palazzolo Acreide bike through Iblei Mounts until Cavagrande Canyon. Here the Cassibile river has created canyon and splendid waterfall where you can have a relaxing bath after hard biking.
After your lunch bag, in the afternoon bike until Noto Antica ruins, an archaeological site of the ancient village of Noto destroyed by an earthquake in 1693. Here you can see necropolis and the rests of the old village.
Return to your accommodation in Palazzolo Acreide.

3° Wake up and breakfast. Bike until Modica.  The best thing after a long biking is tasting the Modica Chocolate. You can ask why you can taste it, and I tell you that this type of chocolate is the best because it is made with an old secret Aztecan recipe arrived here during Spanish domination.
Accommodation in Modica Hotel. After dinner visit the centre of this beautiful village. Here you can enjoy the beautifulness of the great village visiting the Dome and the Churches of an ancient atmosphere.

4° Wake up and breakfast. Bike along Irminio river's valley until you'll be in Ragusa Ibla, another site included in Unesco. Here visit the centre of the city.
Return to your accommodation in Modica.

5° Wake up and breakfast. Biking until Marzamemi, famous for its tuna fisheries. During the way you can admire almonds fields and cherry tomato cultivation.
Return to Modica through Noto Valley.

6° Wake up and breakfast. Short hike to Vendicari Natural Reserve where you can admire the beautifulness of a rare beach and different types of birds.

7° Wake up and breakfast. Bike to Syracuse. Accommodation in B&B in Ortigia, an Island in the centre of Syracuse. Important place to visit. In this site you will find another ancient scenario: Apollo temple, Greek theatre where have place INDA  shows (National Institute for Ancient Drama) and Roman Amphitheatre used for gladiators fights. This is the last evening, and Syracuse will offer to you an unforgettable night walking on Ortigia's streets.

8° Wake up and breakfast. Return to Catania airport by public bus.

Who can do this type of trip?

  • Bike lovers
  • Who has legs for 100 km a day

If you are ready, this adventure will be unforgettable, because you will keep fit and know natural and cultural Sicilian beautifulness together.

Ah, Sicilia
We honeymooned in Sicily: Taormina, Agrigento, Siracusa, Enna. And while I had my mind on other things (as little as possible) I did manage to scout out what looks to be some fantastic terrain, on top of all the other great reasons to be there.

Stay away from Corleone though. I'm sure the climbing is excellent, but still...

Also read the first chapter of Dino Buzzati's book -- again for about 20 reasons, but I bet it'd be great to trace that route for the first stage.

I'll add
If you don't overstay in Ortigia/Siracusa by at least another couple nights, you're making a mistake. My memory of having coffee in the main Piazza, then strolling a few blocks to a little beach club bolted to the small cliffs on the side of the island and swimming in beautiful, clear, cold water while cabana-boys fetched us beers... let's say it's a nice memory.

This video is an attempt to show the ambience at the final hour of the Nice Ironman competition. A lame attempt i'll admit, but wth? If you're ever going to finish towards the end of an ironman, i suggest Nice as the place to do it. The applause and support and general ambience at the end is really remarkable. Dj's, pom-pom girls, people dancing, shouting, dance music blasting ... Some finishers just go on through, others raise their arms or just have a huge smile, one guy did some pushups while the dj counted for him, another did a cartwheel, some ran through with their little kids holding their hands. And this all 8 hours after the winners have finished.

When i went out my door to walk over to see the last hour or so of the Ironman, the first thing i saw was a guy across the street, pushing his triathlon bike, head hanging down to his chest, walking with a pronounced. Painful. Slow. Trudge. Medal around his neck. He'd done well. Hope he felt better the next day.

Then i got to the promenade and started seeing more of the people who'd finished: one guy asleep on the pavement with his wife by his side in all the raucous noise and confusion and crowds everywhere. Then the medical tent - massages, those heat blanket thingies, oxygen, people limping aorund, Oy!

Then every now and then you see a finisher with a medal around their neck who look fresh as a daisy, like they've just had a nice walk in the park.

Then finally you get to the finish line ... and that's the video. At the end there's a fireworks display (no one timed their finish to coincide with it this year) and then apparently a few hundred people stayed all night to party on the prom next to the beach until daybreak.

I could not do an ironman even if i wanted to, but i'll be there again next year to help welcome the last finishers in.
