Discussion: Can the US Keep Up With European Cyclocross?

Here's one for you Cross experts (of which I am not one): can the US be a player on the same level as Europe on the Cross scene? Or at least approaching it? Can we host a handful of the world's top events and count on the elite pros to show up?

My reference point is road, where we field a single team and a handful of elite riders, and where we have fine races but can do little to draw more than a token showing of the Pro Tour stars. Someday the US might host a Pro Tour event, but thus far it's merely a dream.

What do you think? Where's our place on the Cross map, in terms of riders, teams and events?
