Our first yellow jersey to confess, Bjarne Riis told the Danish media today that he took EPO regularly from 1993 to 1998, which casts a cloud over his win in the 1996 Tour de France when he ended Miguel Indurain's five-year winning streak.
This is one of the worst-kept secrets in Cycling, and as people here pointed out yesterday, Indurain finished behind nine others that year too. But it is still dramatic to hear a maillot jaune confess, and it can't be forgotten that the doped-up Riis broke Indurain with a furious ride over the Pyrenees that year.
Is this the low point? Or do we lump it in with the '90s the way we lump cocaine and disco in with the late '70s and just write it all off?
