She was racing the U23 European Championships where she finished third, at the time of the test. Specifically, the test showed the drug flenfluramina, a component in diet products. Though saying that one could never be surprised by anything these days, Ballerini, nonetheless said the result came as a shock. He speculated that the test might have resulted from a herbal supplement, that Bastanelli took unknowingly.
