Gazzetta is running a series of interviews with riders about their winter vacations. Their latest victim? Damiano Caruso. The 23 year old Caruso is a second year professional, who signed on with Liquigas-Cannondale for next season. In the U23 ranks, Caruso won a stage of the Baby Giro and finished 10th in the Worlds race at Varese. He also won Italy's U23 National Championship at age 20. Caruso rode last season for De Rosa-Stac Plastic. With several top five finishes to his credit, Caruso still anticipates his first professional victory.
So about that vacation. Caruso went to the Red Sea for a week: swimming, snorkeling, and beach volley. Sadly, Gazzetta did not feel free to post any photos of these hijinx. Really, they just wanted to talk about bike racing. Like Nibali, Caruso comes from Sicilia, and he is looking forward to riding with Nibs at Liquigas. A climber-stage racer, Caruso told Gazzetta he loves the bike (what else is he going to say?) and last year he rode the Passo di Gavia and the Passo Stelvio to "explore." "I regard Nibali as an example, a model," he said.
No doubt he's missing the beach volley after the recent Liquigas Sno-cation.
Me, I think it all just needs more crayons.
