Joe Dombrowski Wins Giro Bio

Joe Dombrowski, the 21-year-old Bontrager-Livestrong rider recently profiled here, just became the first American to win the Giro Bio (riding with the USA Cycling National Development Program). Dombrowski picked up the pink jersey in the fourth stage, but lost it after a puncture the next day. He regained it Saturday after winning on the Gavia (no, not that one) by 43 seconds.

USA Cycling reported:

"It's great to win," an excited Dombrowski said after the race. "Our race had a lot of ups and downs. We took the jersey after the fourth stage, but an untimely flat cost us the jersey. If I had any chance of getting the jersey back, I had to do it at Passo di Gavia (the eighth stage). Today, we just played it safe and came out on top."

Final results:

1. Joe Dombrowski (Marshall, Va./Bontrager-Livestrong Team)

2. Fabio Aru (ITA) +0:25

3. Pierre Paolo Penasa (ITA) +1:10
