1 Eddy Merckx vs 8 Romain Gijssels

Eddy Merckx

Cobbled Credentials Again Please?

Won the Ronde van Vlaanderen two times, Paris-Roubaix three times, Gent-Wevelgem three times. Handfuls of other podiums. Never won E3 Prijs for some reason. Is that nitpicking?

Tournament Mojo

Dispatched Paul Deman with cool efficiency. Most of the commenters talked up Deman, who may have saved half of Europe, but on the bike he was no match for the Cannibal.

Romain Gijssels

Cobbled Credentials Again Please?

Became the first Belgian and second rider ever to win the Flanders-Roubaix double in 1932. He won Bordeaux-Paris -- routinely over 500km -- that same year. Also in 1933 he became the first rider to win consecutive Tours of Flanders.

Tournament Mojo

Gijssels beat Achiel Buysse, in part by starting rumors that Buysse was a Nazi. Cycling isn't for the faint-hearted.
